PS3 Hardrive - YLOD

Archive: 23 posts

I got the YLOD, but I'll be sensible and stop moaning about it.

Now, I'm going to send it off to Sony for repair, but they wipe (or replace) the hardrive, which isn't an option right now as I have lots of stuff saved onto it.

If I were to send the PS3 to Sony without the hardrive, what would happen? Would they put in a new one at extra cost? (which I am willing to pay for)

You better send it with the hard drive, they will send you a refurbished unit, after all, the hard drive will only work with the PS3 you have at the moment, whenever you try to put that hard drive into another PS3 it will automatically re-format it, sorry pal, but that's why you must back up everything with time :s

*EDIT also, opening the console to stick out the hard drive i think it voids the guarantee, correct me if I am wrong tho.

Yup, since its caused by overheating. However there is a rarer chance.

I would call and ask...because I think you do not have to send the hard drive with it. And, I have to call again, but it sounded like I would be getting mine back. I asked if I would, because I know my hard drive will be formatted when it is placed in a different console and the lady said I would get the same one back...but I still worry.2010-11-11 05:12:00

You are wromg. You don't have to open up the console to remove the hard drive there's an access panel you pop out to get to it. The hard drive was made accessible like this so people could upgrade their hard drive if they wanted to.

I had an external fan attached to mine and she still YLOD'd on me. Who knows if it would have happened sooner though.

I hate to say it but every time I see a YLOD thread I'm reminded to remind people to back up all the data you can while you can.

I took it for granted. You don't think you'll end up in that situation.

I'm looking around for ways round it, but it doesn't look good.

Also, I don't really understand the whole hardrive thing yet. Could I perhaps put it in a different PS3 and save stuff on a memory stick? It's probably been answered, but I have no clue about tech.

No for a PS3 to read a hard drive it needs to format it which wipes everything from it.

You may have already found this out, but the only way to recover your data is to repair the PS3 in which the disk was originally formatted. It will not work in any other PS3.

Now Sony will not repair it, but there are third-party companies who will. Alternatively, you can repair it yourself (http://www.yellowlight.co.uk/fix.php), which is cheaper, but not for the faint-hearted.

Either way, once it's repaired, do not trust it. You'll generally only get a three-month warranty after repair from a third-party company, and it's highly likely to fail again.

So, if you can afford it, go get a new PS3, connect them using a regular network cable, and use the Data Transfer Utility to copy everything to the new PS3.

Before you do that, though, make an LBP profile backup on the old PS3, as the profile in Game Data will not transfer correctly, so you'll need a backup in Save Data to restore from on the new PS3.

Same thing happened to me, but I was able to repair it, and recover all my data.

Quick qusetion.
Lets say I have a 320GB, (I don't but for the sake of the argument.) and it YLoD, Would I be able to take out the hard drive, buy a 120GB per say, swamp the Hard drives and have the 320GB (I don't care if formatted.) on the newer/ cheaper one?

Also, if the above is possible, are PS3 slim hard drives compattible with Old PS3s?
So if per say I get YLoD on a Slim (which hopefully won't happen soon.) I could be able to take out the hard drive, buy some 60GB or something, and swap hard drives so it has the same amount of memory.

Anyone who can confirm or deny?

Correct me if I'm wrong someone but the PS3 hard drives on both the fat and slim models are 2.5" SATA drives so it would work.
I believe the max a PS3 can take is 650Gb but that wasn't your question just thought I would add that.

Excellent, then that's a bit of a relief at least!
Oh and I believe I had someone on my friends list who had or knew someone who had a 1TB drive...or was it an external memory?
Not sure, just knwo its something like that.

I disagree with the don't trust it statement. Sure, there's probably a higher fail rate, but I sent mine in (harddrive free) and got a refurb back. Going on 2 years that thing is. I've got full faith in it.

I was only referring to repaired YLOD'd PS3s. A refurb is different, since they're not repaired in the same way as YLOD is typically repaired (and you don't get to keep your data). They probably use a brand new motherboard, so it'll last about as long as a brand new PS3.

Still, if not losing your data is more important to you than the ability to play PS2 games, and money is not an issue, I'd still recommend getting a new slim than a refurb'd fat.

I always reccommend to try this
http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2376
You can even e-mail gilksy and he is always kind and willing to help.
It worked for me and I had to pay only for the silver gel since a friend lent me his heat gun.
And actually it was quite fun too.

I saved my old PS3 and all the datas, transferred them to a slim one, then sold the Fat YLOD-ed PS3 to the guy of the shopped where I bought stuff.
(He sent the PS3 back to Sony as a new one under warranty and got one new back)
And watch out, since it's what Gamestop mostly do with used PS3 and even more with 360.

@ Aya:
Oh, sorry. I interpreted your post wrong. Either way, I've heard way too many people say not to trust whatever PS3 you get back from Sony.

I'm getting it back this week from the guy I left it into. He told me that the way he does it wouldn't affect my stuff, and after what Aya said I feel safer.2010-11-20 11:00:00
