My Guardian - Sidescrolling Action Platformer [NEW VID]

Archive: 50 posts

Kinda veering off of the top-down path, I've been wanting to work on a sidescrolling action platformer for awhile using a similar battle system found in God of War or Devil May Cry. And here's the concept result...

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_lu60mKzsdms/TNnZ-ZEmCbI/AAAAAAAAAEw/kLvQQnlvKpw/s512/photo.JPG

Similar to my other action levels like Craft Earth Crusaders, the attacking will consist of multiple hit combos. This time though... as you defeat enemies, you can use your score to either upgrade your attacks or purchase new Guardians with different attack/defense types.

I'll also be using a similar animation system like the one I used in my Gundam Wing level for lots of flexibility. And there's the custom jumping/double jump/dash shenanigans that are essential in any action game as well. I'll post vids when I get a semi-decent prototype working. Stay tuned!

EDIT: Derp, vid.

Not so much transparent, but I will be heavily using the hologram material to make it work. From what I've messed with with simple tests, it's definitely going to work well. 2010-11-10 00:39:00

Also when you get the character working can you put up a video?
I want to see the awesomeness + I wanna see how similar my idea is to yours...

Of course I'll post vids once stuff gets rolling. As for now, the key thing is getting the look right. I'm not too worried about the logic and the execution as I know they'll be good to go.

So far so good though. =)

That's pretty much why I opted to go this route if I wanted to make an action-esque game with a Sackbot. There's only so much you can do with the acting and in the heat of the moment, it's hard to make their movements noticeable. I'm down using the Blue Dragon/Persona route. ^^

I want it to feel like a slower and slightly less wacky 2D version of this (which is kinda where I got more inspiration for this project):

Wow these pics look cool!
Looks quite different from my plan... (Yes! )

Anyway... the 2 animation things to the right, is the top one just a finished version of the one below it?
I'm asking this because it looks like it's missing something... maybe the eyes?

I still need to do sticker work on it, but imagine the guardian showing its back as it punches with its right fist.

You're so sickeningly good with the visuals. I can juggle data (http://sifterfund.com/images/single_view.gif) and work the logic but I'll never be close to your animation and visual capabilities. Are you on MM's or Sony's payroll nowdays btw, since you're able to finish so many projects?

I'm more interested in side scrollers than top-downers to be honest. Can't wait to see how this turns out, good luck.

Nah, I'm alright. I'd probably do a little better if I had the time, tbh. xD I still have to see if I can make the visuals coherent enough to my personal standards.

LOL, last year I was. And although not directly, it was thanks to Sony involvement I'm currently getting some decent secondary compensation right now on top of my well paying day job. =) Just like my ideas, I have too much going on IRL all at once, lol.

this looks... EPIC!!!
I wish i had the lbp2 beta
maybe you could have it so that if you kill enough enemies this bar fills up, and when it's full Your gaurdian transforms into a more powerful armored version for a limiteed time making your attacks more powerful and your defenses stronger.

LOL, that's basically what I have in my Craft Earth Crusaders level.

As you said in the OP there will be multiple guardians...
I know this is looking ahead, but how are you going to have a leveled out guardian system to appeal to all player types?

What I mean is, a lot of people play in different ways, for example I would probably use a guardian that is quick and/or has large combos, how will you make a guardian with that play type be an equal match to a guardian that is really powerful and/or defensive?

As with Craft Earth Crusaders, the different styles (Guardians) will possess certain traits that the others don't, but will still be balanced appropriately. If you want to stick with one type throughout a level, that's definitely your call. But as you will be able to switch Guardians on the fly, it's more important to use them in the right situations than anything else and the gameplay will expect you to do so. Although... you can be rewarded if you stray the expected path.

For example, when you have the Battle Guardian (the red one), you have meaty combos, but no projectiles. If you switch to the Gunner Guardian, you have projectiles, faster movement, and can float temporarily. Yet you take more damage. This of course can lead to some fun platforming puzzles, certain ways to kill a boss, etc.

Remember, you're still controlling "your sackboy" as the Guardian will always be following you. Just think of it as an extended personality trait, kinda like in Persona.

Thanks man! But yeah, ideas are there for a sequel of sorts. =)

How many players will you be able to have playing in this at the same time?

I guess you might not be able to answer that right now, because if you do want to make it multiplayer, that might end up impossible do to large amount of logic, or it will make the level(s) a lot shorter. So answer this when you can.

Anyhoo.,. Mr. Show, slightly off topic, but I have 2 questions regarding hologram animations:
Are you using shaped hologram for your frames, or are you stickering them (just out of curiousity, but it might be relevant to 2)
Do you have any specific methodology for lining up of frames, becauseI had some major fail when attempting that

Hmm good questions
i wonder that my self,
i use to Sprite and in the past at first i'd line
things up by the under ball shape of the head...
but thats not good... its best to line things up
by where the heart/MidTorso would be on the character,
if i remember right *mew

Haha, thanks for that.

As for your questions, they're not really off topic at all.

1) These holograms are shaped and are actually several pieces of holograms glued together or connected by pistons, etc. The stickering again is primarily for detailing.
2) Well, I have a base idle animation hologram. Any additional animation holograms added is essentially glued to the base animation hologram after all the crazy logic is applied, similar to how my Gundam Wing level worked. But of course that's all done after all the frames and logic that I want are complete as the final work just looks like a character from the Matrix with all the wires coming out of it.

The fun (or not) part about this is that I have to double up every frame and logic set as I need to create a facing left and facing right setup for every single move starting with the idle animation... and I'm thinking at least 15-20 some odd unique movements, not including the 2 extra Guardians I'm planning to make as well. lol.

Logic for the 5-hit combo facing both directions, including double jump logic. It's nuts having to think about the timing and button cancels to ensure this thing plays like a God of War or Devil May Cry. Still haven't implemented the hard attacks or the rest of the guardians, lol.

Was messing around with ideas for the Gunner Guardian and worked out a DMC4 like Devil Arm game mechanic where you pull enemies to you, grab or push certain objects, and pull yourself up like the grapple arm when finding certain grab points or when fighting large bosses. Hopefully I can get it worked out later on this week since I'm on business trip right now and forgot my PS3's power cable. :S

You will also be able to use the Gunner Guardian like a twin stick shooter depending on the situation.

Haven't spent too much time on it aside from drawing up logic stuff during my recent business trip. Here's what it looks like as of now... because of all the existing frames, it's too sluggish for my tastes. I will probably go in another direction with this, so stay tuned. Until then, enjoy the vid I suppose, lol.

It's just directional input connected to the different frames.

Control override? Whatever that is, it works for me, lol.

And on another note, I've put this project on the backburner for now. Although, I've applied the same logic to a top down action level with a similar goal and it feels sooooooooo much better.

Derp, I've actually scrapped this project for now because I really didn't like the way it was headed. Luckily for you, I've implemented the logic from this into another top-down concept which in turn will also trickle into the Craft Earth Crusaders stuff. It's muuuuuuuuuuuuuch better than before. I'll post a new thread regarding the entire "Craft Earth" top down series, lol.
