SA reviews "She's a Rainbow"

Archive: 2 posts

A long time ago, I asked Mr. Radical permission to review this level. I came upon it browsing the level showcase, and the name and concept of the level pretty much had me sold. That was about a year ago, so I think it's about time I got this review out the door, and I'll try to keep it relatively short and sweet.

She's a Rainbow is a level designed very artistically, but more importantly very colourfly. It's a basic platforming hell level with a series of precise jumping challenges and mild difficulty puzzles. Each room you enter is very specifically designed in the likeness of a solid color, and often times the color will help to reflect the mood of the room and it's content. It's very common for an orange room to be very mellow and relaxed while a blue room might be perilous and mystifying. The simplicity may seem a little shallow, and it may very well be that way, but it's extremely effective. While some of the exact jumping segments irritated me more than expected, there was never a point where the aesthetic bored me. Despite the basic nature of the level design, it's quite beautiful.

Navigation might be a tad difficult if you have a bad memory. SaR is plotted very openly. The non-linear design is very reasonable and honestly correct here, but it is fairly uncommon within the LBP universe (at least as I've experienced). After the first 3 rooms, you are dumped in the rotating center and almost all the rest of the level is accessible but the very last corridor. The final couple rooms aren't unlocked until you've explored the rest of the various rooms for the 6-7 key switches, all of which are different colored and shaped stickers. A fair warning: You won't be able to complete this level unless your Community Photos is set ON.

Because of the non-linearity of SaR, there isn't really an applicable difficulty curve here; the entire level is about equally tough. Because the level starts off a little challenging and never recedes, the level might have a tendency to drive some people away. If you can, I recommend you stick to it. It's all very well built and was relatively run to play, if a tad lengthy.

I'm about to end this review here, I do apologize if it's a bit short but there are valid reasons for that. First off, there's really not a lot I can actually say about the level. It's exactly what it looks like, there's no dishonesty to reveal here and no hidden agenda. What you see is what you get: an artistic looking, well paced, non-linear level with a simply devised boss battle at the end. Secondly the level doesn't really have what I find relative to a story, mostly because there isn't one. A level with no story isn't necessarily bad (Example: this one), but it leaves a lot less to talk about. If you read any of my other reviews, I think you'll notice there's usually a bit of time spent examining the narrative, but SaR doesn't have enough of a narrative to really talk about. Well, regardless, I thought SaR was a great level and really thrives from it's simplicity. If you like artistic levels, you'll definitely want to check this one out.

Final Score: 7.5 / 10
Colourful, challenging, and simple. A well built level that lets the visuals do all the talking, but it does lack some motivation with it's lack of narrative.

On a side note, I like to spell colour with a "u".

Great review SA! I have always enjoyed reading and writing reviews and yours are honest and not too terribly judgmental on the cause of your own playing style and preferences. Great Job and I look forward to writing more of my own and reading more of yours!2010-11-09 06:25:00
