The Inventor's Apprentice

Archive: 7 posts

My idea here is for a series of levels that tells a story, while also having fun with contraption-building...

The idea is that a great inventor has gone missing (kidnapped?), leaving behind only his novice apprentice, who needs your help to find and rescue him... There are two main problems here: a lot of tough obstacles lie between you and where you need to be to help him, and the apprentice is still learning... so the vehicles that you have to use to get through each level each have some sort of major flaw, requiring you to use your own craftiness to overcome the vehicle's shortcomings. With each subsequent level, the inventions get a little more refined, which is good because the obstacles get tougher. (The idea is that the apprentice learns from observing what needed to be fixed, and thus fixes the previous issue, but doesn't foresee the next one.)

By the final level, the inventor's apprentice has actually built something pretty awesome and you finally find the actual master inventor, who rewards you with a bunch of cool custom objects.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?I love the idea, but how do you "fix" things since you can't create in play mode?

There would have to be some clever smoke & mirrors.. Obviously you can't actually glue stuff together while playing a level, but you'd have to work around the flaws of the machine.. or maybe there's an empty slot and you have to find an "engine" object that's supposed to go in there, and then at the end you run into the inventor's apprentice again and he goes "Aha, so that's what it was missing" and along the way of course you get the key to the next level, where an improved version of the vehicle appears.

Basic idea is that in each level you get a better, but still flawed machine, and you have to use some of your own ingenuity to do what the machine can't do for you. Until the last level where they finally get it right, and by then you should be pretty familiar with how to basically use the vehicle.

You'd "almost" have to build the whole scene backwards then? All the parts in the final object.. and then take the parts out one by one for each previous level? (assuming it's the same 'item' throughout the entire story?)2008-10-31 19:35:00

Very cool idea. If you do this right, it could come out very well done.2008-10-31 19:43:00

Yeah, basically I'd first have to spend the time building something that's actually really good (I'm not there yet with my create mode skills). I had the idea because of the vehicle I've been gradually developing (search for level "Enter the Whatmobile" if you want to see it... there's not really a level there, but you can see my rather funky vehicle). Every time I would play with it for a few minutes I'd come up with a new idea of how it could be more functional (and if you play it, you'll see it is still pretty unwieldy, although I'd like to see how it works with two people operating it). So I thought, "Hey, why can't that be a storyline. First level, the thing is such a P.O.S. that you basically have to push pull and drag it through the level. Next level, it's a bit better, and so on and so on." And that's where the idea is so far.2008-10-31 19:46:00

Neat concept. It actually might be a lot easier to build than you think since once you have the final version you just have to start taking things out. The tricky part will be building the equivalent gameplay for the missing piece.2008-10-31 21:17:00
