A major problem with PSN
Archive: 33 posts
I was playing the beta last night when I got a message... An error has occurred and you have been signed out of playstation network. Ever since then, my ps3 has been unable to connect. If I try to re-enter my details in network settings, I get a message saying dns error 80710102. If I set it to automatically detect, it won't even find an IP address. If I set things manually, it accepts the IP address, but then it says "unable to establish a connection". I contacted my internet service provider who ran a diagnostic and said the broadband was working fine, which logically it must be since my laptop is able to connect using the same ethernet cable I use with my PS3. (I have to use ethernet since there's a thick concrete wall between my PS3 and the home hub, which blocks the wireless signal). I've unplugged every internet device in the house, swapped cables around, reset my home hub to default settings, everything i can think of, but nothing works! Can anyone explain why my PS3 has connected ok for the last 2 years, then suddenly....this!? Has it happened to anyone else recently? Any solutions? I'm getting real worried now, since it seems I'm never gonna be able to use my PS3 online again, which means Ungreth as a creator and community player is effectively dead. | 2010-11-06 22:58:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

I've had this a few times normally clears up after a few hours of the PS3 being off. It was switched off for about 12 hours after the initial problem, but when I turned it on again today it was still unable to connect due to dns error 80710102. It's not looking hopeful. | 2010-11-06 23:52:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
You might check your router log for errors. If not enabled.. enable logging. It might be something as simple as mac filtering got turned on and your PS3 was never defined. Hard telling.. sometimes routers do weird things, especially I've noticed this with linksys routers, but might just have been my luck as well. ...whatever it is, the router log might share some clues for us to help you get this resolved. | 2010-11-06 23:59:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |

How do I check my router log? | 2010-11-07 00:12:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
From your pc, you sign on to it via a IP address in your web browser such as http://192.168.1.1 for some linksys routers. You then get a login screen to put in the login and password. Do you have the manual? | 2010-11-07 00:17:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |

Do you have the manual? I type my IP address into the address bar at the top of the browser, and it comes up with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" | 2010-11-07 00:24:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Well.. it isn't YOUR ip address you enter. It needs the default IP address of the router for you to sign in. Did you set up the router originally or did someone help you with it? Did it come with the broadband installation? If you look on the router and find the name and model, you can find a pdf online from their site that has the instructions on how to login and inspect the log. It might actually be some wacky issue on your ps3, but I was hoping that the router log might give you a better clue. | 2010-11-07 00:27:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Did you try googling "dns error 80710102."? Each error has a why and maybe a solution, so you just need to pretty much google it and you'll get a ton of result that can help! Here, let me get ye started: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=dns+error+80710102&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= Hope that helps! | 2010-11-07 00:49:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
1 Open a browser window and enter the router's IP address into the navigation bar. For most routers, the default IP address is 192.168.1.1. 2 Enter the username and password used to access the router. Press "OK" and the console application will be shown in the browser window. 3 Click the "Password" tab. The UPnP settings are located in the same window as the router's password settings. 4 Select "Disable" from the box labeled "UPnP" and click the "Save" button. Close the router's console window. Start the Playstation machine and connect to the Internet. | 2010-11-07 00:59:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |

I've managed to access the home hub manager, but I can't see a log option. @silverleon, of course I've googled for a solution. None of the things I've seen suggested have worked for me. @whale...it won't accept that IP address you suggested, and I don't know the default IP for the router. | 2010-11-07 01:13:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
I've gotten that error off and on since I got my PS3 (one of the original 60G). This thread helped me every time: http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/Solution-for-your-DNS-error-80710102-problems-Works-for-all-ISP/m-p/42264211 | 2010-11-07 01:21:00 Author: Chazprime Posts: 587 |

During this time did you try logging in with your PS3? ..also can you browse the net with the PS3 browser? ..and you might try what Whaaaale suggests. | 2010-11-07 01:50:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Ok, it took me a while to find this since it wasn't quite the same route to the UPnP options as you described, but I've now reached a screen which gives a choice of UPnP: On or Off. It describes UPnP as follows..."Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) enables a wide range of applications, such as games and messaging, and devices to connect to each other and work together." You're saying to disable it, but judging by that description of it's purpose then surely it needs to be "On" for my PS3 to connect, no? Or am I misunderstanding things? During this time did you try logging in with your PS3? ..also can you browse the net with the PS3 browser? ..and you might try what Whaaaale suggests. During the time covered by the log I posted, yes I tried multiple times to log on. I can't browse the net with the PS3 browser. | 2010-11-07 01:00:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Hmmm I would try flipping off UPnP just to see what happens. For example on mine, even if mine is on the PS3 won't detect it. So I don't think it is a big deal if it is off. | 2010-11-07 01:34:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Yeah, it won't hurt to turn it off, and if it makes matters worse just turn it back on. I do think that will solve the problem though. | 2010-11-07 01:49:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
Turning UPnP off has made no difference. Still no connection. | 2010-11-07 01:54:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Weird... if you get a chance, maybe a fresh peek at your log to see if any of us spot anything. ..sorry, wish I had a drop dead "AAHHHH that is the issue" bit of news for you. | 2010-11-07 02:01:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Turning UPnP off has made no difference. Still no connection. Who is your internet provider? Roadrunner? | 2010-11-07 02:11:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
My internet has had small fits like this in the past. I just left it off and forgot about it for 24-48 hours, and everything was fine. | 2010-11-07 02:13:00 Author: piggabling Posts: 2979 |

He is in the UK so who knows. Isn't Road Runner for people in the UK? | 2010-11-07 03:33:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
I don't know how to fix your problem, but I feel your pain. I really hate it when simple things like this fail to cooperate. My thoughts are with you. | 2010-11-07 03:36:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
Isn't Road Runner for people in the UK? Possibly.. I have no idea what he has though. I am sure he is asleep right now. lol | 2010-11-07 04:03:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Home Hub was mentioned so I'm assuming that BT is the service provider. In the network setings section of the setings part of the XMB in Settings and Connection status list what do you have for the last 3 things on the list? Mine currently has: Proxy server Do Not Use UPnP Not Available NAT Tyoe Type 2 When mine has messed up before it has been: Proxy server Enabled UPnP can't remmber what this one said NAT Tyoe ---- | 2010-11-07 08:10:00 Author: Rabid-Coot Posts: 6728 |
I actually had this problem with my PS3 a while ago, and most google searches did point to the router as the source but I couldn't figure out how to fix it. so I phoned my internet provider and asked them to how reset the router and connection, which they guide you through. That fixed the problem... Good luck! | 2010-11-07 08:50:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |
Ok, so I installed a brand new BT home hub today. Every device in the house that connects to the internet is working fine, except for my PS3 which keeps giving the same DNS error message. As far as I can see the only thing left to try is to reset my PS3 to factory defaults, to see if that makes a difference. If I do that, I will lose the beta, but I can't see any other solution left, as nothing I have googled has worked for me. | 2010-11-07 13:13:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Ack... I would hate for you to do that.. you have such cool stuff in there!! Have you tried contacting your ISP or possibly (shudder) Sony support? | 2010-11-07 14:18:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Ok, I tested my son's PS3 downstairs on the ethernet cable and it got the same DNS eror, then i tried my PS3 inside the living room where the wireless signal is strong enough to detect, and hey presto....I'm connected again. It has to be an issue with the ethernet cable somehow. Even though the laptop is able to connect using the cable, PS3s do not seem to be able to anymore. Strange. Anyhow, there's some hope...if I can somehow get around the issue of a thick concrete wall and get the PS3 to pick up a wireless signal in the garage, I can get back on track again. What I can't do is keep my PS3 in the living room, since the kids have taken over that area of the house and it's no longer my territory. Besides which, I need to smoke while I play/create, and I don't do that inside the house. Any suggestions as to how to make a wireless signal pass through thick concrete? | 2010-11-07 17:06:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Ummm besides knocking a hole in the concrete? There are wireless repeaters, but I suspect one that would do the job you need would be more or as expensive as a new Ethernet cable. | 2010-11-07 17:46:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
OMG...I'm a bad sack. I've neglected to thank all the folk who kindly tried to offer help in this thread. All posts should now show my thanks. Your suggestions are much appreciated guys. OMG...I'm a bad sack. I've neglected to thank all the folk who kindly tried to offer help in this thread. All posts should now show my thanks. Your suggestions are much appreciated guys. Now where's that sledgehammer? I've got a concrete wall to defeat. There are adapters that plug into domestic power outlets and use your house wiring for network connectivity. I'm not too sure if these would work for you but they worked for me, my dad works in the garage and the wireless signal had to get through 3 floors as the router was on the top floor, he bought one of these and the signal is strong now. I'm not sure how much they would cost as we got ours free from our internet provider, but you essentially need two outlets, one in the room where the router is, and one near your PS3. You get two of these adapters, one plugs into your router and the other would plug into your PS3. It basically makes it so your not wireless, but wired. I don't know if this would even work as you seem to be having a problem with being wired all together but if nothing else is working you might as well give it a thought. | 2010-11-09 06:33:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
