Any Laptop suggestions?

Archive: 32 posts

Alright, so I need a new laptop for myself as my old one's battery is kidding with me. Yes, I know the battery can be replaced, but the big trouble is that my laptop is around 17 inches which means I barely can manage to fit it inside my backpack for school. Bummer.
The one I got now is a HP Pavilion dv7 laptop and I heard there was some problem with heat and such damaging the system, so would anyone be kind posting and share their experiences with me so I can pick the best suited after my needs.
When talking about needs I need something I can work on with school and such but also got support with media, or at least is able to work within those bounds. Media defined is Photoshop, or any program like that, music and Powerpoints, stuff like that.
A long battery lifetime is also appreciated.

I have asked a bit around within family and school and it is quite a big and mixed bowl of suggestions I got. Is MacBook any good? Or should I get a smaller HP pavilion? Alienware?

Help

Well, Alienware is really good, but noisy and its mainly for gaming but manages really good graphics, its expensive tho.

The one I got now its a Dell inspiron 1525, its kinda good, I have photoshop installed on it and works really nice, but it doesn't have a video card (which sucks because I cant play good PC games on it, also it is pretty big), my mom has a Dell XPS 1210 which is small and really good, it can handle photoshop too (again, it doesn't have a video card, but the in-built intel graphic chip does the job), but the memory is limited on it, you can try to get one with at least 3 Gb, that should boost performance.

If you want a really small pc, there's the eepc, which is very small, and quiet, and its memory can be expanded to 2 Gb, but it doesn't have a CD drive and I doubt it can handle photoshop.

I hate HP, that's all I'm saying about them, their printers suck and have lots of problems.

Get a MacBook if you have the money. Photoshop and all that works without a problem on them and all the work stuff does of course work as well. The battery lasts long and they are very quiet.2010-11-04 18:40:00

Yup. MacBooks are good, and you don't have to deal with viruses etc.

If you want a PC though, I'd go for a Sony Vaio. I have one and I love it. You can also get a very large range of colours

Ive never used a Mac, but they are good computers, are quiet, efficient and have no need for anti virus, only one advice, if your school uses some online educational software or stuff be advised that Mac may not run all the most common used programs by schools.

False. There are now Mac viruses in the wild. But the vigilent user should have no need for anti-virus even on a Windows machine.

I've never used a Mac laptop before, but I've definitely heard they are nice. I have a Sony Vaio like Plasmavore. I've had it for 4+ years (I think), it works great, it's pretty, it has a nice big screen, a built-in webcam and it plays Blu-Ray. ;]

The only thing is, it deleted its own webcam software and I haven't been able to find it... <.<

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and call bullcrap on that one. All Windows machines are the primary target of virus makers. They are so easy to break that all, even those that get very little access to the internet, are vulnerable to attack. If you want an actually secure operating system, go with Linux. there are for real NO viruses in the wild for them. Get yourself Ubuntu. It is really popular, well supported, has an awesome community of developers and other super users that are there for you any time of day, (ubuntuforums.org) and has support for Windows programs. It's easy to use and dang smexy to boot. I'm running it right now and I can tell you that it is the best operating system I have ever used. Just so you know, I dual boot Windows 7 as well, for gaming. It's okay, but I wouldn't dream of running it without anti-virus. Any laptop you have Ubuntu on will run faster, quieter, and cooler than the same computer with Windows. OH YEAH, and hp loves Ubuntu. All printers/scanners/faxers/copiers/anything that hp makes works out of the box with it.

I like my Dell laptop. I have the extended battery and it lasts pretty long. Sometimes I sorta forget that I have moved it away from the power supply and start wondering why it is beeping at me. lol

Had several different Dell laptops from work and without too many issues.

If you have the money I'd recommend getting the Macbook as well. Ragnarok did mention that there are programs that won't work on the Mac though. I know you can install Windows onto iMacs (I'll be doing that when I get mine ) so I assume you can do it on MacBooks too. If you can then I'd recommend doing it.

Since you're using it for school, having Windows would make life easier.

On that particular matter I may mention that I am not looking for a pc to game on anyway, at least not in the long run. Yet.

Hmm, will these are my experiences:

I own a Macbook Pro (yeah, the only time my parents will spend money on me is for educational purposes) and it works brilliantly. People generally prefer them for media uses, since I hear they work much better for things in that genre. However a Windows also works fine with Photoshop, etc, as far as I know.

I personally have had absolutely no problems with compatibility, you can get office on a Mac, but iWork recognises word/powerpoint/excel files automatically. If you don't want to spend as much money though, a Dell Inspiron is very good, many people I know have them, and they are compact, colourful and pretty fast too.

Funny, I can play games on my Mac.

Yeah, check out review sites as well, to find whats best for you.

Did I mention that Linux is free? In fact all open-source OS's are. And since Macs have good hardware these days, you can even put Windows or Linux on them. That way you can get the laptop you want with the OS you want.2010-11-05 18:26:00

Just a little info about my Vaio; you may have to buy a replacement battery after 4 years. The battery life was amazing for the first 3 years, but then it slowly started dying. I may have gotten a dud for a battery, I don't know.2010-11-06 17:04:00

Macs > Pcs.

That is all.

...

What?
Fine, I'll expand:
Macs are quieter, cooler, cooler, um... Cooler...
And they look cool.
And they work well with apple products like iPods, iPhones etc.
They're easier to use, more intuitive, cooler...

I can't think of a downside other than the price.
But seriously, get a mac.

Not to start a war or anything, but my Vaio doesn't make a sound, it's quick, it's sleek, and I've never had a problem with it. It's a matter of opinion, not fact...

My uncle or aunt, I am not sure which (and no, they are not the same person XD) had a Vaio I believe and the battery needed to be replaced because it was some other kind of brand, but apart from that it is supposed to be nice!

But keep them suggestions coming anyway

... I do wonder why MrSuperComputer have not commented here (yet), I thought this would be his homeground?

I have an acer aspire 6920G. It's a couple of years old (Only as old as lbp) but it's frickin awesome. So it'd be quite cheap now but acers are pure quality.2010-11-07 13:37:00

Anti-virus functions as a detection and elimination system for viruses. With proper security settings and exercising due caution, it should be unnecessary.

But I started using Linux five years ago and haven't touched Windows except at libraries or work since. Though your claim that "any laptop with Ubuntu will run faster, quieter, and cooler" is pure propaganda.

To anyone curious about Linux/Ubuntu, you can download the CD image and burn it to disc and then try out the operating system live from the disc without ever installing anything on your harddrive. It's the way I consistently convert people to the Linux side, it usually goes something like, "OH CRAP, MY [WINDOWS] COMPUTER IS BROKEN FIX IT FOR ME SO I CAN FINISH THIS ESSAY/REPORT/PRESENTATION IN TIME!" to which I reply, "Use this CD to do it." and then they go, "Oh, this is awesome, can I get this?"

I say go with Macbook Pros. Due to their nice sleek design. But, me being a Windows person, swapped the OS from a Mac layout to a Macbook Pro running Windows 7.... :kz: Yes, I said it. Windows with a Mac... Sue me.

But there's a really wicked website called ColorWare, you basically choose which parts of your Blackberry, Macbook and iPhone parts you want custom painted, whether it being metallic/solid and glossy/soft touch. But I caution you, the price is a bit.... Pricey, but in the end, I don't regret it. But if you're not the hardcore "Omg-I-have-the-option-to-custom-paint-this-so-I-will" kinda person, I suggest that you rather not visit the site. If you need an example, this is what my set-up looks like.

http://i55.tinypic.com/23uvkx.jpg

But now onto the laptop's hardware itself, the battery life would last me 8-10 hours or so, even advertised by Apple's website, which is quite true, depending what you're doing. As for media purposes, I have Abode Photoshop CS3 and CS4 installed. If those two are installed with plenty of room to spare, then you can guarantee that disk space is quite... Large, lol. And it being 13 inches for me, is quite enough monitor space. The 17 inch is a bit overkill in both monitor space AND weight, which if you carry around with you on a daily basis, you'll find quite a pain in the rear end. . Which is why I highly recommend the 13 inch version! I thank you for taking time to read this, and I hope you find the perfect laptop for your need. -hint hint- Points up...

Bought my new pc just two weeks ago online. It's my first PC in five years and I got it because I'm tired of upgrading for games and I wanted something smaller. I searched online reviews for hours and ended up with a perfect choice. I wasn't looking for a gaming laptop but the acer aspire as5551g at 480 euro was also great for games. I checked the specs against the 6-700 euro ones and it's just as good. It's quiet but the fan kicks in when playing games as expected. I highly recommend it.2010-11-08 10:29:00
