When to call it quits

Archive: 16 posts

So I have spent countless hours in create mode and then countless hours in play mode and then all back over to get the level just the way you want it.....THEN you hit the F4F. THEN you make the suggestions and get more feedback. THEN you attempt to adjust within the means of the thermo...

Just when do you call it quits when you create a level and put the 'FINISHED' stamp on it?

When you no longer find it enjoyable to tweak.
I don't think you can ever make a perfect "finished" level. I can't think of one that couldn't be improved. Including my own levels.
Not going to stop me trying though, and that's half the fun.

Bahahahah!
Quits?
There is no "quits!"

I've been tweaking "Shinan Fortress" for about 2 years now (ever since release.) its the first level/ series I've made and its still under tweakage, and will probably still be during LBP2! XD

So yeah...you call it quites whenever you want to, there's no "appointed" time to do so, just do it or don't, that's the only rule.

Tell her that to an artist, to rush the brush is to haste and waste. 2010-11-02 07:40:00

haha yeah not alone.

I've never been 100% happy with a published level. Even when I think I'm done tweaking theres always something else that needs adjusting. Its only going to get worse when LBP2 is released and we'd have more things to add and adjust :S

Good question.. I think I usually spend so much time on a level that by the time I hit my 7 days, most if not all fixes are done. Prior to that I have a private Beta that I gain a week of suggestions that I will usually add as those folks are my most favorite and insightful play testers. Quite a few of those are pretty awesome creators in their own right which is pretty helpful! So after all that and see thumbs up from all that had a chance to test, that is when I publish. Sometimes during the 7 days, there might be another 1 or two suggestions that come up on my level thread, that I might include. However... most times.. by the time I publish out to the public, I am pretty much done and just taking any feedback as food for thought towards my next level.2010-11-05 21:53:00

i can never seem to convince people to test my levels for me so when i publish them they are usually a total mess and completely unenjoyable for the first 50% of players...2010-11-06 21:42:00

I have never actually completed work on a level. After spending months just fiddling and tweaking stuff obsessively I eventually get bored, think of a new idea, and publish what I've done so far so that I can start the next project.

Nobody ever seems to notice all the stuff I didn't put in the level, except for me.

ditto here. i'll edit, whether fixing or changing thousands of times after publishing... and edit some levels whenever i get bored as old as 2008.

I remember someone once told me that true art is when you don't want to add anything to it in case you might ruin it

Normally I "officially" stop when I feel the level is just right. Over the months I go back to add tweaks and fix glitches though :/ that part never seems to end!

What about when the main character and all his friends and all their friends die in an spontaneous incident involving killer bunnies and rifles leaving the universe as empty as a child just before breakfast? Not much could happen after that if I'm honest...

yeah, but then you might want to go back and explain how the killer bunnies got their rifles, what motivates them to kill, and create an entire culture and lore around them with parallel narratives. Then the publisher forces you to split the behemoth into 3 books, which requires you to elongate and restructure each third... then you see that you're locked into a 5 book contract and have to rewrite the ending to leave it open for 2 more books.2010-11-08 23:04:00

Whilst the plot could finish you could always go back and add other details. Like another chapter/adjectives etc.
Sorry if that wasn't clear.
