Writing a Review of LBP for my school paper, the Rebellion: Suggestions?

Archive: 9 posts

First of all, here is my school's newspaper site:

WHS The Rebellion (http://whstherebellion.com/)

Yes, I realize that you can easily find my school now, but I don't care tbh.

Today, my journalism teacher has offered me an article position in the Entertainment section. The Rebellion has never included video game reviews before, so mine will be the first.

In my English class, while reading, he randomly came in the classroom and offered me the job, and told me to meet him after school.

So after school today, he asked me which game I would like to review, and obviously, I picked LittleBigPlanet. He had no idea what it is, so I explained the concept as briefly as I could, and summed up the three sections: Play, Create, and Share. I am thinking about splitting the article into those three sections, as that would make it more interesting IMO.

For tomorrow, he has asked me to bring in 2-3 professional reviews so we can look over them, as he claimed he has never seen a video game review before. Any suggestions for what articles I should bring in? What are the best reviews out thus far, IYO? Should I bring in Cartman's as one?

He also said that I should start thinking about the strengths and weaknesses of the game, so you can suggest some that I can include, and I will think of most myself of course.

I am planning to scan the article and post it here once it is released, as the article is for the November Issue.

Any tips? Suggestions? Advice? Things to avoid?

Keep in mind that this paper will be public, so the entire student body can see it.

Thanks. :arg:

I'm a reporter for my school magazine, although with the amount of 360 fanboys in my school I don't think me doing a review of LBP would be good. However, your paper looks much more impressive (ours doesnt even have a site!) and since its online you will have better chance of people taking to it. Just be natural with your words and everything should be good! 2008-10-30 20:57:00

We have some Xbox360 fanboys as well, but most of my friends prefer PS3 by far.

I don't blame them...

You must have some favorite reviewers yourself, no? I wouldn't necessarily pick a review to reference if it's a game that you feel strongly about; an unbiased reviewer almost always delivers the best product. Not saying you should stay away from an LBP review, but you should read unbiased reviews for guidance.

Probably wise that you split it into those three sections. Might make mention too as to why you're choosing to do that ("The LBP motto is 'Play, Create, Share' so..."). I'm sure you can find plenty of positives to report on so I'll assume you really only need help with the negatives. I wouldn't say LBP is riddled with graphical issues, but the issues are there nevertheless. There's steady "pop-in" when you drag objects (Sackboy and object go through one another), the z-axis tends to be annoying, and you can even note that - despite all that was included in the game - that you would have liked to have seen even more stuff to interact with (e.g. water, ice).

Just some thoughts...

i can not wait for it but i can comment on one of the weaknesses, the plane shifting, the game just kinda guesses what would be the best layer to be on and most of the time it is right but when it is not it can be kind of irritatting

Cheers!

maybe you could bring in other reviews. Like not reviews of LBP but of other things just to get a good idea for the structure and such.

I think this is my best.

A quick tip. If you're struggling about length, copy and paste the specs or features (from an official/trusted site). I do it when I'm not struggling for length; just for the heck of it.

If you want me to include anything in the article, post it soon as I am writing it.
