"The October 27th 2010 Server Update." Your thoughts/What exactly have they changed?

Archive: 2 posts

Hi there fellow LBP'ers,

I'll try to break this down short (or just skip to the end if you can't be bothered readin it all because knowing me, it probably won't be short) but as you may or may not know, yesterday (October 27th) you will have noticed the LBP servers were down for 24 hours worldwide. This came with a notice on startup by Mm if you tried to log on that day or the day before. Incase you didn't see it, here's is the notice in full:

"Hi Sackfolk, at around 08:00am BST on the 27th of October we will be taking the LittleBigPlanet servers offline for approximately 24 hours. In this time we will be fixing the servers up with lots of new technology to make them ready for both LittleBigPlanet 2, and the features that will be available on LBP.me. During this time, you will be unable to access any of the Community levels, or play online. When the servers come online again, you may notice one or two small differences, but most things should remain largely the same and the fun shall resume!

Sorry about that, hopefully it won’t be too inconvenient for you all. Mm"

So as you can see, it's pretty vague within it's (non) description of what exactly they doing. Well here's the thing I would like to know, does anyone know what exactly has changed? I think they've changed more than what they are letting on... Maybe even causing a few problems for people who were in the middle of the 7 day pool after upoloading a level? (Basically you get 7 days after publishing to do your best to get your level on to a nice little spot to increase it's shelf-life/longevity because after that period if your level hasn't secured a nice little spot it pretty much gets buried like the infamous E.T videogame on the classic Atari.)

Anyway I was on the 3rd day in after publishing my level "Resident Raytech" when this update happened. I had 72 plays, 26 hearts and a solid 5 star rating with plenty of good tags and great feedback from all who played my level. I was going F4F crazy to promote my level while helping others the same time. When I heard the news I got a little worried that the updates may mess with things especially the whole ratings and publishing process. So, the next day comes and were back online. I fired up the old PS3 and LBP only to be dissapointed with a whole star missing. I wasn't sure whether or not it had anything to do with the update but basically I had 73 plays, 26 hearts and now a 4 star rating. Don't get me wrong, a 4 star rating is well and good but it just seemed a too coincidental that it came right after the updates and servers came back online and with only 1 play difference.

I also noticed a few other odd things like the fact that the highest rated pages seemed almost completely different to how they were before the servers went offline, only to be incrementally reverted back to it's (mostly) original state. I started to think I was just seeing things but then I noticed that some of the tags I previously mentioned that were used to describe my level were actually missing. Also, do you remember the "pinkish" glow around certain level icons that were on the top of the cool pages? Well I had a look and that seems to be completey gone also...

Summary: So these are just some of the little things I've noticed that I felt were odd little occurrances that appeared after the October 27th update. So my question to you is; have any of you noticed any similar occurrances such as changes in highest rated or cool pages level layout, changes in level rating, dissapearing level tags or anything strange after the October 27th update? Do you know if they have they changed the whole level publishing process?

I'd like to know any details you may know about this update and would like to share with the rest of us. What exactly have they changed? And what will be further changed when LBP2 comes out if you know. Any thoughts, experiences or ideas on this subject are much welcomed. I'm interested to know and I'm sure many others are too. Thanks for reading.
