How to Start...

Archive: 12 posts

So I've just joined but I don't know where to start my first post. So, I thought I'd muse on this....

How does one establish themselves in an online community forum? Well, there are many different answers. It definitely depends on the type of community. Sure, you should be true to yourself, but you have to know what kind of responses are suitable for the certain group. You also have to be careful not to "Jump on the Bandwagon". Start posting like you own the place, like you fit in immediately is like sitting at the popular kids table at lunch. You have to work your way in (Though I've never been in a cafeteria). Some communities are more accepting, but it's still kind of annoying to see a brand new person posting on every single topic and being the latest poster on all of them.

How does someone work there way in? Maybe that's the reason for this forum. To get that first post out of the way so you can focus on your role in the community. Of course, I have no idea what that is. I've had littlebigplanet 1 for a long while, but I've never really been a creator. Of course, with the psp edition I think I'll be a lot more active. Maybe a level is needed, maybe several. It's certainly a route to fame. Or maybe I should review: I think I could do that.

Perhaps it's simply to tell people about yourself so they know you... Nah, that's not fun. I believe in getting to know someone. Once you share your life story, there's nothing left. No one is curious and you become the internet tumbleweed blowing fervently through different communities.

Maybe you had to just be there from the start. Most common posters are respected and worked together to become that way. A small outsider may find it intimidating!

Anyway, that's my first post which I've drop-kicked on your lives. I hope to post and post some more!

I have found a bit of an opposite reaction to telling your story. In my experience it opens up people who may never have otherwise started talking to you. Take me and AdenRalumdan. It all started because I had a costume of an old video character I liked and posted some art of it, whereupon he and I talked about it and are starting the process of making a level series based on the game. It's all about finding a friendly and active site, putting yourself out there, and letting the magic of the internet find you a new friend. Also, welcome. I love this site and hope to see you around it.2010-10-28 04:47:00

Welcome! Glad ya made it!

Interesting post. I can see your point, but I think simply saying what you like about LBP or your favorite things to do in LBP is most handy. Just check out the site and make a post if you see anything of interest. Just make sure that the thread you are posting to is current. For example no sense commenting or answering on a thread that was last posted on in 2009. ...however, threads in the Level Showcase are not subject to that. So commenting on a favorite level of someone, even an old one, is a nice gesture.

We are just here to have fun and share in the experience of all things LBP. There are a ton of amazing creators roaming the halls here at LBP and proud to say most of them are wonderfully nice and think of themselves as just one of the gang. Basically we are here to help whether you are wanting to get all the 2x and 4x prizes or wanting to hone your creator skills to be the best you can be. Even if you want to just hang out with a ton of people that enjoy LBP, you have come to the right place.

Have fun!

Well this seems like a pretty awesome forum then. And of course I get the first response jitters. It's truly an exciting thing to join a new forum and this looks like a good one. It's active (which is a huge plus) and everyone seems really awesome. I guess I'll go ahead and tell my story of LBP.

Christmas morning and I find LBP waiting under the Christmas tree last year. Excitedly, I begin playing and getting pumped to make my own level. I enter the level editor and watch about 1000000000000 tutorials. I get frustrated because I'm unable to get the trophy for watching them all and completing them and to this day I've still never been able to figure out why. Anyway, 10+ hours and I have my first functional level. It was unplanned and was made before I knew about thickness changing (I thought it was changing which layer it was on!) That was a major problem until after I had published and learned. I've not created any levels since. I also found myself frustrated with the "cool levels" and decided to just use the search function.

My LBP days kind of died for a while. I was sick of playing through bomb survivals and finding good levels seemed to daunting. I went back in to work on a level but ended up getting LBP psp instead. To my surprise, I found the editor to be more user-friendly and having only two layers was a far less daunting thing. Currently, I'm working on a halloween level to get up in time for its respected holiday. It involves pumpkins!

Anyway, that's about all I can think of saying for now...

WOW, you have some nice writing skills and nice grammar, I think you will fit here just fine man, you could try to make use of your blog or try to give some useful reviews (that comes very handy here) I actually had problems to merge here at the beginning (left the forums for like 4 months) and then returned recently (probably because i have nothing to do now), I'm not a pro level creator, but do objects every once in a while and that has given me some very small tiny fame over here, also try to see what you can do for the community (I make pixelated versions of sacks), that may give you some fame around the forums too.

Hope you have a nice stay and I do really hope to see you get involved in the community, if you have any questions or doubts feel free to ask me or any other nice folk around the community!

Awesome! You have both!

Yeah.. some have had the tutorials issue. You just have to play through them again from the top unless of course there is a ? mark showing. Otherwise you start at the beginning and go do some laundry, vacuum the rug, or bake a cake. lol Horribly boring really, but at some point it will finally register that you have completed them!

As far as levels.. oh boy, you are in for a treat. There are a ton of amazing levels listed in the Level Showcase. Some of have made it to what we call the Cool Levels sub forum which is those that have had over 20 replies which shows quite a bit of interest, and the cream of the crop make it to the LBPC Community Spotlights. That is basically the best of the best spanning a 2 week period. We just hit spotlight number 50, which is almost two years worth of great levels.

On creating... prepare to get more dizzy as we have some of the best Tutorials and tips on the planet at your disposal, including the LBPC Logic Packs. ..and if that isn't enough, (people always want more!!) you can always do a search through the Help forum and if you cannot find the answer, just ask!!! Scary huh!?!? lol

AND as a bonus, we also have a fantastic section devoted to the PSP version of the game with it's own Level and Object Showcase, Tutorials and Help forums.

So feel free to roam around the forums and if anything confuses you are not sure what to do, just ask!!

Take care!

I have to say that the tutorials by LBPC are by far the best and easiest to see and learn from and beyond even that, you can copy them to incorporate, adjust, tweak, or anything else to your liking

Yeah, what jwwphotos said. Plus, making LBP-related, or not, art and posting it on an art thread is like a rep goldmine. I had started out on the forum in April and by early September I had *just* gotten my third rep bar. Now I can say I have 5. PURELY because of my art thread (which I highly recommend posting a request on). I literally got my last three bars of rep faster than it took me to go from one, which is effectively zero, to one. No joke. The people here LOVE art, and will give you helpful tips if you're not so good yet.2010-10-28 21:20:00
