DJ Hero 2

Archive: 1 post

I saw that my friend Morgana made a thread for Rock Band 3 so I thought I would make one for the other big music game that was just released, DJ Hero 2. I picked up my copy with turntable last Friday (actually, it is an early Xmas present from my wife lol) and I have been having a ton of fun with it. The package I bought also included a FREE copy of the first DJ Hero! Talk about a pleasant surprise

DJ Hero 2 features over 80 unique mixes from almost every genre of music. You will hear hip-hop, rock, house, electro, trance, funk, disco, reggae and more. Most of these tracks are mash-ups of two songs to create some truly spectacular mixes. Snow will be mashed together with the Jackson 5, Lady GaGa with Kanye West, Edwin Starr with Stevie Wonder. If you are a true music lover there is a lot to appreciate here. I found myself grooving to songs I would normally never listen to (a Metallica track for example) because of how creatively it has been mixed.

DJ Hero 2 makes you feel like a pro DJ (I once considered this as a career so it is especially gratifying!). You will cut between records, scratch until the break of dawn, work the tuner, rewind the platter, tap out the beat and cross fade like there is no tomorrow. When you really get into the "zone" there are few games that are this enjoyable. The first time you get 100 hit streak will feel good. Hitting 150 will feel great. Hitting 300+ will make you feel like Grandmaster Flash himself!

There are various modes to play around with including Empire (basically career mode), Quickplay (where you can create and save your own custom playlists) and fantastic online options. Battling other DJ's is a big part of this industry (primarily in hip-hop circles where the craft was born). DJH 2 gives you a plethora of options to do that. There are 5 different ways to battle your opponent and each is very fun. Checkpoint battle has the songs broken up into checkpoints, he who wins the most checkpoints by the end wins the match. Streak has you going for the longest hit streak without making a mistake. Star battle has you battling for the most stars/points. There are dozens of titles and emblems to unlock to customize your online persona but unfortunately you can't customize your character (hoping they will add this in DJH 3). Then again, there are few things cooler then playing as the RZA from the legendary Wu-Tang Clan so it's not a big loss

In addition to the online suite you can battle your friends by issuing challenges. After finishing any song or set you have the option of challenging anyone on your friends list to beat your score. This is a very cool feature that adds a competitive edge. Assuming you are online you will automatically be logged in to the servers that keep track of all your stats, leader boards and live updates of your friends recent achievements, very cool stuff.

There are 5 difficulty modes with advanced tutorials for Normal and above (Hard and Expert). You can earn up to 5 stars for each song and there is a nice learning curve that really let's you appreciate how you have grown between hour 1 and hour 5 (and hour 5 to hour 10). I have now finished almost every song with 5 stars on Medium and will challenge myself to Hard. Microphone support has also been added allowing someone to sing along (and be scored) while you cut records up (there are even trophies for the singing). This is a nice feature that will especially be valuable if you have friends over. If you have 2 turntables for two people to mix and a mic for someone to sing it should be on hell of a party!

There is a lot more I could write but I will leave you with the Metacritic score instead (87/100)
