For those of you interested in story (or even those that aren't!)...

Archive: 21 posts

This is my first post here, but I do frequent libipl.net and I used to do the same with littlebigfan.com (too bad it's...dead?). My plan right now is to make quality levels for people, but not just platforming and problem-solving...so here I come with this post.

I think that it's been confirmed... Linking levels to another, and getting a "key" to access the next level, correct? Well, I have this crazy idea in my mind to chain one level after the other to have a big story unfold, giving a sort of RPG element to it, too. No, I don't plan to bombard players with walls of text, but it would be nice to keep them motivated to keep playing and finish the story. Anyone else plan to do this? If so, what might your ideas be? I normally don't do threads like this, but, ah well.

As for my idea, I can't really say much. I don't know who will/won't play my levels, but I don't wanna give anything away, except that "The Great Evil shall soon awaken."

Hm, sounds catchy!
...
Something Lovecraft-esque about it...but not quite. :3

I have thought about doing that actually! Although my plan is to have more of a humorous story than something lovecraftian. A videogame parody series of levels, where the main character's girlfriend is kidnapped by thugs. Levels parodying various games/ genres and their stories would ensue.
What do you think?

That's a pretty good idea. Telling a story through the levels, and it motivates the player to keep going through the others.

That sounds good.

It's not a crazy idea Its the main point of implimenting the key system.

I probably will make a little series of levels, but I've said before, I think im gonna be concentrating on minigames. (Like the endurance test)

I'd love to play it though, add as much text as you need to keep it interesting.

welcome to the forums, aswell!

I'm hoping you can add a level description before launching said level so players get a general idea of what's to come... That would really be nice.

I'm doing it alone at the moment. I'll happily have people join in and test the levels out though, but I'll probably restrict it to a group of friends before allowing the public to see them.

On a side note, if my level-making goes well, I might make a little level-making team. Who knows. :]

I've thought of linking together stages for stories as well. For me, it's more of a 'sequel' than an extended story board. I say, if you have a story to tell, there's no better way to tell it than on LBP.

As for the build-team... just look out for groupthink. Also, remember that there's no I in 'team' but, there IS an I in 'cohesive'.

Sounds like a brilliant idea. It'd also be good if they found a way to implement NPC Sackboy/girls into it, for such ideas like the girlfreind getting kidnapped by thugs, and you can tell her what to say etc 2008-08-05 18:49:00

Well, the 'sackboy' can easily become a 'sackgirl' as they have long hair, dresses, ect for you to dress him up in. He really does look fairly gender-neutral until you dress him up a bit.

*Thinks of that Donnie Darko scene*

Lol, I was more on about the fact of just adding a NPC sackthing which you can use in your levels, not for help, of course 2008-08-05 19:44:00

Hey guys, someone on the GameFAQs message boards brought this up.

in a new preview, its confirmed that the key will automatically teleport people to the next level so if you have 1 level divided into 2 you can put a key at the end of the first that teleports them to the 2nd

Is this true? Does anyone have source on this?

It it is, then great, means it'll be less of a hassle to move from level to level!

Alright, found it. Taken from shahchip from GameFAQs Message Boards.

"There's magnetic switches. Which is totally new to me. You have a pair of switches that can be split between two objects. The switch only triggers when they're brought together. As Edge says: "in a single move, the colour-coded keys and gateways of Gauntlet and a hundred other RPGs are suddenly brought within reach".

"The mechanism for chaining levels together is also revealed - keys. When you build a level, a key for that level is added to your inventory. If you want to link that level to another you're building, just place the key at the end, and players will be warped from one to another. The capability opened by this is pretty great also, in that it needn't just be warping players from the end of one level to the beginning of the next. You could have worlds of multiple depth..e.g. have a key to a doorway of a house, to warp your players to another level representing the inside of the house."

Not sure if double-posting is frowned upon in here, but even if not, my apologies. I just forgot to reply to this message.

Anyway, definately. It'd be something organized. Probably put out general ideas the team could form together nicely. Anything I want done in a specific way, though, I'll do myself, apart from said team...haha.

Just an idea for now, though.

We're not too strict here, but to keep the forums clean double posting should be avoided from now on. There is an "Edit" button if you need to edit your post, and within that is a "Delete" option if you want to get rid of your post. You can even delete it and repost it to let people know there is new information.
