mini tutorial creation technique - The Elevator

Archive: 15 posts

When I saw the other tutorial video by that guy who did the fake item's, I subscribed to his youtube feed. He's posted this great video of a working Elevator. Top quality in my opinion,

I really like the glass doors, although just from the little level that it seems set over and you see how much of the thermometer is used up, so you couldn't go mad and have lots of these about, unless someone can come up with a way of limiting the amount of memory being used up for this type of item. I'm think copying and pasting may be the way, using it as a predefined object, and replicating?? What do ya think?

I could easily figure this out myself, but still, its a neat concept. I always had problems with my elevators getting stuck on things, but now mabye ill have you jump in it. That should solve it!2008-10-29 22:38:00

This is cool. Really helpful for ideas to make your levels longer. Or more interesting. Nice job.2008-10-29 23:54:00

Some clever stuff there; never would have thought of the 'automatic' doors. I think it would be funny if you could have that 'shopping mall' kind of music when in the elevator.2008-10-30 18:46:00

Honestly, I think he's an average "good creator", if that makes any sense. He knows how to use the tools well and he is experienced with the Create side in general(which defines a "good creator"), but he doesn't seem to do anything particularly original. Maybe I'm just being picky, but if someone's going to make tutorial videos, I want them to make a video showing me how to do something I don't already understand. However, I can see how this would be useful for those who don't know how to make things like this, so I'm not saying the tutorials are useless. They just don't benefit me. Does that make sense?2008-10-31 05:00:00

I actually thought this was rather well done. I like these types of things, good for inspiration. This wasn't the most complicated thing, but it definitely helped me think of more creative ways to use things like magnetic keys, etc...2008-11-01 07:42:00

Stupid question, how do you get the light emitters or whatever, what is it exactly? I probably haven't unlocked it yet...

They look really awesome.

nvm, just realized they are called either LED, or a lamp or whatever it is called. Mostly from the wedding theme I think.2008-11-02 20:56:00

Yeah, so far in level creating it seems like the thermometer fills up quite fast, I hope it's not a thing I actually have to worry about, as long as I don't try to fit 2 levels worth of content into one .

As for copying & pasting/using predefined objects. They could help a little bit, not sure, I do know that it treats predefined objects as not a set of different objects, but just one (i.e. you can't separate the sub-components). But I know that once when you have one material in(i.e. wood) then more amount of that material won't cost as much in resources. This is because it just caches it and will then be using the reference. So it is the initial burden of making that first object that tends to be the problem from what I've seen. So if you go around starting a various themed-level, you will probably run into some problems, because you would be using tons of different materials, even if the sheer space of materials is the same as the level you had less material variation goin' on.

X3 this is a totally random question, but any ideas what the song is that plays when the Sackperson is actually in the elevator? It sounds awesome, and I'd definitely use it for one of my levels. XD2008-11-04 22:06:00

I love making elevators. It is really cool, and it is also useful for making mountains and how to get on top of these mountains.2008-11-16 21:51:00
