Unknown Community Spotlight!

Archive: 50 posts

Hello and Welcome to the start of what will (hopefully) be a ongoing monthly Spotlight, that aims to bring you a look at some Unknown and Underplayed Levels hidden deep in the Community. With the first of these Spotlights coming on the 1st of November, we've decided to Share the news and rules with everyone, and maybe get some awesome feedback .

Ok, so here are some rules:

1. For a Level to be classed as 'Unknown or Underplayed', they have to have Less than 1000 plays.

2. The creator of the levels must have Less than 1000 Hearts.

Obviously the less they have, the more likely we are to add them to the Spotlight.

3. If the creator has had ANY of there Levels featured on the regular Spotlight, then they are not classed as Unknown, and therefore will not be chosen for this one.

4. Copyed Levels DO NOT count.

These rules are not set in stone, so if we feel we have to, we will add or change the rules.

How it works

This is a small project (at the moment), so its just me and TonyTwoGuns. We hunt through the millions of Community Levels looking for the ones that not only fit all the rules, but have that something extra special. We then choose 5 Levels each, write a little review, what makes the level so awesome and what we liked most about it, record a video so if the review wasn't enough, you can see the level in action, and then post the list in the 'Recommendations' section of the forums.

We look forward to posting the 1st of what we hope to be many 'Unknown Community Spotlight!'

Any feedback is welcome greatly appreciated.

Thanks: tom230889 and TonyTwoGunz

Nice one Tom and Tony, this is a great idea. There are many creators out there who feel like that don't get a chance so this will sure put a smile on their faces!

Just out of curiosity, is it just going to be you two or will you soon add more members to your spotlight crew??

the sad thing is, i fit all the rules, and so do my levels... ( i have like maybe ten hearts, i dont remember, and none of my levels has more then maybe fifty or so plays.... ) and i doubt you guys would consider any of my levels, mainly because, well, i am a member, and youre trying to spotlight people who aren't "known" *sighs, then puts on a slightly sad face, and moves on.*2010-10-25 11:16:00

Thanks Tia

I can't see why we wouldn't add a few more people, the more people we have the more Underplayed Levels we could find .
Although I think we should wait until after the first Unknown Community Spotlight, so we can see if people would like us to keep making them, and if anyone would like to help whit it .

If you're saying that you don't think you will be chosen because you're a member of this website, then don't. It doesn't matter if you're apart of LBPC, or any other LittleBigPlanet website. (and i will check out your levels next time im online )

actually, what i meant was, the fact that i pointed it out, well, kinda makes it look like i am trying to push you toward it ( for lack of better words ) and, well, kinda lessens the chance.... if you see what i mean.
EDIT* i feel silly now. i just went and reread some of the posts, and realized, you said you'd check it out... oops, .... so i removed the bit on my lvl series.... i can put it back if anyone wants me too....

It does sound alot but its wether we feel the level is right for the spotlight, and if theyre levels are good they may have been part of the LBPC Community Spotlight which means they cannot be included here.

The main point is to bring under played levels and creators to the attention of the wider community

This is where the idea came from, that thread was more focused on the creator then the levels though. Sadly the idea was cancelled, so we decided to do this thread.

Well, celsus has an awesome series called "The OK Choice" and most of them if not all don't even have 100 plays and I know he doesn't have many plays. I'm not sure about his other levels but I know "The OK CHOICE" doesn't have many plays but are great levels.2010-10-26 14:36:00

Tony and Tom, shouldnt some of your levels be a part of this seen as you both dont get as many plays as you deserve.
You both have created some great levels!!!

Great idea, but I think it would hold more weight if you submit a proposal to Confused Cartman to make this an official regular feature of the site rather than trying to go maverick, which could potentially create rifts and encourage oppositional factions to form here at lbpcentral. The new "indie" spotlight could be added in as a sub-section of the existing community spotlight, which would give the project more authenticity and a better chance of exposure.2010-10-27 16:16:00

Hey lads and laddesses (lasses... whatever)! Ryhas from the spotlight here!

I just wanna say I like the idea. Keep working at it! Great thoughts!

Some advice though: I know you're considering the possibility of signing new people on, and you should definitely keep considering this. We've got 8-10 people working on the spotlight any given fortnight, and that's on a hugely reduced level list (thousands and thousands each month on LBP becomes 100-200 on LBPC). I think it could be extremely stressful for two people (even extremely devoted, hardworking people) to have to meet the deadline of sifting through thousands of levels to find the underplayed greats.

Also, consider what might happen if you find more than five underplayed awesome levels. Think about what you can do to choose which to include and which not to include. I'm not saying I doubt your tastes! But it's definitely an issue you'll have to address.

I also don't want any factions either, so if this thing really gets going, start discussing it with us and CC!

Finally, have fun, and feel free to ask me any questions!

how about recruiting someone to monitor the lists ( give him a key to a thread with the lists, which no one else can see ) to make sure that levels don't get reviewed by both spotlights. and hire more people to the unknown spotlight thread.2010-10-28 03:43:00

to make sure that levels don't get reviewed by both spotlights

We will be featuring levels from the wider community that we feel deserve more plays, whereas the Community Spotlight is for levels posted on the LBPC forum

well, it doesn't hurt to have a backup. or, maybe you could just make sure your level lists don't interfere with each other, to make sure that no "factions" form, you know. i would love to be a part of a team that does something like this, but, sadly, my parents are divorced and only when i am at my dad's can i play lbp. and that is only when he is off work, and during school, it shortens visits down to just the weekend, the longest period of time i have been at my dads house was a month. which keeps me from being able to do these kinds of things.2010-10-28 11:11:00

This is such an awesome idea, I really hope this takes off and you find some levels in need of some much-deserved love. I do have one concern though.

Being a community spotlight member myself, I've seen firsthand how, putting it mildly, things can get contentious if anyone feels that the spotlights are "unfair". This has happened on several occasions in the Community Spotlight. Your spotlight, whilst it has clearly defined rules, could (possibly) be argued at more, as many more people could deem themselves "unseen", "underrated" and "underexposed" (and naturally, when you're in that position, you feel very frustrated - I know I was!). I'm not saying that's a reason to stop doing this - just be aware that many people may not be happy with your level choices, and may demand that they be included because they fit your criteria. Also be aware that you guys pick the levels - no-one else. Stick to your guns!

Secondly, I wouldn't suggest that this become an official, site-wide feature, largely because there is already an official community spotlight, and another one could possibly make visitors to LBPC confused. If you're concerned about publicity, ask CC to post an announcement box (similar to what happens with things like Sackcast and warlord_evil's LBPC image) to direct visitors to your spotlight - and if you're concerned about authenticity, you shouldn't be - just wait for the floods of thanks you will receive from the creators you have highlighted. I wouldn't have said allowing access to our spotlight's forum to non-spotlight-crew members is advisable, but it is still entirely possible for us to work in tandem with you guys via PMs if necessary.

Finally, don't think I'm criticising you at all - I think it's a wonderful idea and you guys should keep going strong. Just a few things to bear in mind. Good luck!

You both have created some great levels!!!

Thanks! but Tony's 'Inner Circle' level has been Spotlighted, (Rule 3.) and it would be incredibly biased and unfair to add 1 of my levels to this spotlight.

Think it would be best to see how the first 'U.C.S' goes before we ask.

we will make sure this will not happen.

Dom from the spotlight here (Is this how we're going to introduce ourselves to everythread now hol and ryhas?)

If you guys do stick to your guns and give it a real go, I would suggest not using the word 'spotlight' if you can possibly help it.

Using the same word in the title could present the idea to newcomers that it's fulfilling the same agenda as the official community spotlight, and it could cause confusion (as hol said). Words like 'feature' or 'highlight' mean a similar thing but aren't exactly the same word, just a suggestion.

Well good luck anyways, if you guys are looking to fill a niche then thats a very cool and respectable thing to try and do.

It might end up being that you won't find that many super-awesome level creators that aren't recognized though. All levels that get posted on LBPC do get played by us, so any amazing ones will get skimmed off the top in the community spotlight for sure. If you want to tap unknown creators, your best bet is to dredge through all the other fansites.

Just my $0.02

@Asbestos101

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated!
I see where your coming from with the name, thats a good point. As it is a new thing tho we could always adjust it
As for the levels, the ones we will feature will not have been posted on LBPC. We will be finding them by searching the community so there shouldnt be a problem regarding the official Spotlight using them aswell.

If u search hard enough there are alot of talented creators who have very few plays or hearts, which is the reason we want to give them a little more exposure

lol i can see why asbestos would be a lil confused by the LBPC part thinking it was for fansites...and thats where my 2 cents on the name changing should probably focus on changing the word COMMUNITY

since here in LBPC the word community in spotlight meants just here in LBPC...maybe using another name for the event (hidden gem spotlight) or something close to the original name would be good

but the word community struck me as odd when you guys said it wouldnt be levels posted here...but all levels in LBP/LBP2 in which case the word community makes it sound limited to the fan site you post it in

but then again thats just a suggestion

It probably is a good idea to change it to somethin not so close to the official Spotlight. But as ive said, its only the very first one and a new thing, changing the name would be quite easy.

Sounds nice... but i know of a few creators who deserve a spotlight, their levels aren't that good, but it is what is BEHIND their levels that is good... the logic... or the artistry... or you know,... stuff like that, you should do ones where the whole level isn't great but the creator deseves a spotlight for what a wonderful job he did in certain areas... like my forest, in Parakee isle: part 2 that took awhile to make look so good. that would be cool.2010-10-29 13:12:00

Yup! Can't wait to see how you guys do it compared to how we do it on the official LBPC spotlight!

When your first 'episode' comes out, ask CC if he could put up a site-wide notification so people know when a new one is out, you'll get more views that way.

Although that would be awesome, probably best if we see how the 1st 1 goes.

Also been thinking about getting some more ppl in to help with the reviews. At the moment its just 1 review per lvl. For the next Showcase, me and Tony will choose some people and ask if they are willing to write a little review for us.
