[MUSIC LEVEL] The All-Originals Mixtape

Theres 13 different tunes there for your listening pleasure. And no, I haven't sat down and pumped out 13 bits of dross, these were all created for seperate purposes and now i've got a nice little collection of them I thought I might as well put them in some sort of showcase.

The ones i'm most proud of and the ones you should listen to if you parchance into my level are;

'Boozed up saloon'
'Burlap Car Seats'
'Drugs in the Sun'
'Alien Scum'
'Island Mentality' (this one takes a few bars to get going properly)
'Agency Urgency'

I will be taking requests when LBP2 proper comes out, but for now i'll make little dittys or sweeping epics for peoples levels, but only if it's clear to me that you will be putting a sufficient amount of effort in to make your level amazing.

I don't want to be making tunes that then don't get used, that's a waste of both of our time.

But yeah, check out what i've done if you will, and PM me if you've got an awesome level and you want an original tune for it, though if you do, be quick because the beta will be ending soon :'(

I'll check out your music level today.

Out of curiosity: How are you getting on with composing within the music sequencer? Do you find it OK? Is it tedious and a chore to compose? I ask because I find it to be fairly non-musical and limited compared to hardware and software sequencers I've used in the last 20 years or so. I'm not complaining at all, though... the sequencer isn't meant for pros or anything, but man I'd kill kittens to be able to connect a MIDI keyboard to it.

LBP2 music sequencer is at least powerful as MIDI format in technical aspect and even more since you also got reverb and such

If you use MIDI recording a lot it might be hard, but it might be easier for old-skool module tracker composer

Oh and i played you level and cool tunes ^^ you one of best on the beta

Asbestos, I quite liked the Island songs and the Something Harder one (I think that's the name of it). Very good stuff there.

Shadowriver, I see your point. I'm just about as old-school as they get (so old, in fact, I can't even bear to spell it as "old-skool"). I've programmed sequences on gear that had nothing more than a 2-digit LED display. Ah, those were the days. OK, maybe they weren't.

Regarding its power, the LBP2 Sequencer is pretty good and with some effort you can wrangle some nice stuff out of it, but it's nothing like a dedicated MIDI sequencer. Arguably, it doesn't need to be. MIDI is not about sounds or effects (reverb), it is about note on/off and note/effect parameter data, among other things. MIDI can, for instance, control the depth and time of a reverb effect in real-time, at any point within a given sequence, whereas LBP's sequencer cannot do this mid-sequence. (I concede there are workarounds in LBP, where you can copy multiple instances of the same instrument with different reverb / echo effects, and layer these accordingly within the overall song to acheive a similar effect. It takes a little longer, but you can sort of get what you need from it) All that I aside, I do not think that LBPs sequencer is a technical equivalent of a MIDI sequencer.

I would personally like more granular control over note-placement, so I can more accurately reproduce a flam or proper triplet. Currently the Sequencer is limited to sixteenth notes (which can be doubled to 32nd notes if you double the tempo and enter in your sequences accordingly to suit). Ideally, I'd love to have the ability to work in 64ths, i.e. a macro mode, where the default timing is in 16ths, and you can expand this to 32nds or 64ths. I don't know anything about LBP2's sound engine, so this may not be technically possible.

Anyway, not complaining. Just having a sequencer at all is pretty awesome, and I applaud Mm's decision to do this.

I love the sequencer, plain and simple. It's not perfect, not by a long shot, but it was always going to be an ambitious addition to LBP2's selection of tools.

I'm in my first year of music tech at university and have been playing guitar for nearly 8 years and home producing for 3ish, so this does feel like a step back, but in other ways the limitation fosters creativity.

So it's good fun, plus these little tunes I do only take about an hour to two hours to complete

Asbestos, as of today I see your level is up to 18 songs. Good going. Some of the newer ones were really good.

As for the sequencer, I've become used to it. I hope Mm make some improvements, but if they don't, they don't. I can adapt.

Really, really wish there was a chorus or flanger effect, but you can kind of simulate this by using the Global Audio Control Filter for music moving in small increments over time. By the way, love the fact that you can layer or stack the level's reverb with the sequencer's reverb... Level reverbs have more choices available, like underwater, etc.

I also discovered that you can drag the note-off straight up vertically so that it is line with the note-on (or you can actually drag it so the note-off comes before the note-on for the same thing) and you can get a double-hit that might be slightly faster than two quick notes next to each other. If it is, it is probably barely perceptible to the ear, but it does free up the next step, letting you get a double-note-on flam thing happening, or a triplet if you stack them next to each other. If you do this with the drum kits, you can get some crazy drum triplets with different or similar instruments (try changing the volume so that it's different from the note-off, too) If you're not sure what I mean, I made use of this for a synth sound on my "About those bounce pad challenges" level.
