Ape Escape series project

Archive: 7 posts

When North America had the outdated version of the beta i got a little bored because there wasn't much to do. So i started learning about some of the new tools, i took interest in the sackbots and how they'd function with switches, and a little lightbulb turned on, Why not do one on the sweet Playstation series Ape Escape? I spent hours getting the logic together so everything works, and started working on a tutorial level (since we are in the beta and we might not be able to transfer it to the full version, i didn't want to go all out)

For those of you who don't know about this series try youtube but whatever you do don't look up story scenes (or pretty much any gameplay involving Ape Escape 2's main protaginist, Jimmy) because they ripped that entry of the series from the older version of the Pokemon anime, voice actors and all! The problem with the series was only having 4 active gadgets (1 almost always being the Monkey Net) at a time and having to pause the game to switch. Well I was able to configure a sackbot in which pressing a button emitted a gadget but unlike the series he can switch between a lot of gadgets on the fly instead of just 4, even though the level is on a 2D plane instead of a 3D the gameplay mechanics still turned out great, the monkeys logic proved fun to configure with (since like in the series every monkey is different, so in my project so is there logic) Since the mechanics i made fit well there's a lot of possibilities that i could add in the future that match to the series, platforming elements, bosses, complex puzzles etc.

The Gadgets I was able to put onto the Spike sackbot

Stun Club: In my project, not really a gadget since its slapping a monkey, but the effect works just like in the series, stuns them making them easier to catch

Monkey Net: This is a must, being the story catching monkeys and all that)

Slingback Shooter: (Slingshot), In my version fires off flare bullets igniting wood and monkeys, the bullets are harmless so you don't have to worry about killing a monkey, however when a monkey is on fire you don't know how he'll react, he could be too fast to catch or you might collide with him and die. For some reason there was a problem with the emitter (possiblty a bug with the beta) that caused the projectiles to shoot in the wrong layer you are in, so instead i had the bullets be in all 3 layers, plus with this it gives a later gadget more use.

Super Hoop: (Boost), Putting it in was simple, making it so you couldn't use the Super Hoop with any other gadgets was a pain because otherwise the game would be broken)

Sky Flyer: (Using it allows you to access high places and glide over wide gaps). Inspiration for getting this to work was from jump_button's Up and away in Sky Town, it was my personal favorite gadget in the series, and with my project it still is.

R.C. Car: (A tiny remote controll car you can use to go into small gaps and chase monkeys from a distance) This was surprisingly the hardest gadget to work, because a sackbot automatically goes into a controllinator

Magic Punch: In the series this gadget was just plain overpowered, making everything easy which is why it was always given to you when you beat the game to get the reamaiining monkeys in the series. So in my project I just made it the Magic Punch.....Gloves (aka the Grabinator) And so to give this a purpose i made it the things you throw with it stun monksy or break things you couldn't break with the other gadgets.

Bananarang: (Fires a banana boomerang that emits a scent that attracts hungry monkeys), the new gadgets in Ape Escape 2 were pretty lame because you barely used them, and in here its pretty much the same, If monkey is hungry (which like the series there aren't that many) he'll go over to it and try to catch it and you can catch him while he's distracted. Since this is emitted in only one layer this could also be used to hit distant switches in narrow small passages ways since the slingshot won't work in since it fires in all 3 layers.

Hydro Cannon (Fires water to put out flames) Being an Ape Escape 2 gadget it also doesn't have much use but since you'll be igniting monkeys (say if you got to get him off an high platform that even the sky flyer can't reach) this will have more use than the series.

------------------------

Tank: This is the of the vehicle gadgets you find throught the series (so you don't spawn it at the press of a button but in the manuals of the series they always counted it as a gadget) I really wanted to try to add a tank in the level to barricade through something so...yeah

For this level for the beta its at version 0.9, Because right now its just a tutorial level for each gadget (minus the tank thats still WIP). The last thing i want to do is add a little more to put your training to the test and catch 8 more monkeys each one based off the colored pants personality thats a staple to the series (Black colored pants monkeys use weapons, Dark Blue colored pants are fast, Light Blue colored pants hide etc.) plus i have to fix up the R.C Car gadget theres a bit of a problem with it.

Once I finish the above, I'll publish it in the LBP2 beta, and record a video of it. Then I'll be done with it until the full game comes out. Surprisingly all this so far only took up less than 30% of the thermo. I won't have to worry about people with the god-glitch stealing my creations, because everyone automaticaly enters an pop-it disabled controllinator (the other 3 players controllinators do nothing, this is a 1 player game after all), and getting out of it ends the level to a scorebored far away on the ground. When LBP2 comes out, I'll remake (or import the level if we can) the level and I'll go all out and max out the thermo full of monkeys to catch!

Well sorry for the LONG list of text, but i wanted to finally reveal what i've been working on!

I played around with Ape Escape in the beta too.
Some questions:
- Can the player/sackbot die/respawn?
- Published any part of it yet?

Keen to play a demo!

The sackbot can die and he does respawn (The respawn ain't perfect, it zooms back to your sackperson, and you press O to zoom back to Spike, but it works)

Nothing is published yet sorry, once I finsihed what i said earlier I'll publish it. I fixed the problem with the RC car but now i find out the it can crush the apes (and spike to if you try) so i gotta figure out how th fix that.

Pretty cool.
The obstacle courses/rooms for each of the monkey personalities were nice.

But do you need to slap the monkey in order to catch him? Or can you just use the banana-boomarang > net?
One of the nice parts about ape escape is that it doesn't force you to be overly mean to the monkeys.
Tried using a hologram net? Then you would be able to catch a monkey if he's against a wall.

Got a LBP.me link?

Most of the time yes you do wind up slapping in order to catch him , Kinda like how the stats each monkey had when using the radar on them. Some are hungry and will chase the bananarang some are not. I think in my level 3 of the 15 monkeys chased after the banarang. Yeah it does seem like it would be a little dull having to slap almost every time in order to catch, but if I had them all of them hungry it would be way too easy. And there's no other method you can try other than brute force since you can't stealth (well maybe i could but that would be consumning, both time and memory) I think i overdid it on which monkeys attack and i think i set most of their speed a little too fast, thats probably why it looks like most of them you have brute force, I'll try to remember fixing this come LBP2

The hologram net sounds like a neat idea, but wouldn't it also fall through the floor? (I haven't experimented a whole lot on the new materials yet) but having it limited in space makes you have to change your tactics, as in trying to get the monkey to an open area so you can catch him.

Had a play, but got frustrated with the sky flyer.
I would just use hologram and movers on the sky flyer/net, so it doesn't collide with walls/thin layers, etc.
