Some more basic help needed for the new guy.

This is actually a three part question.
(1) When you plan on doing a passage in a scene what is the best way, Say that I put the tunnel on the farthest back thick layer, Then do I add a thin piece of material over that to hide the tunnel, and if I do that how do I make my cut outs without being able to see the back tunnel to make sure they line up?

(2) Say I creat a (for example) 10 grid high by 10 grid wide three layer deep block of cardboard, then I select cardboard again and make it a 1 block by 1 block by 2 layer deep cutting tool and move it to the front 2 layers and cut, why does it cust all the way back to the last layer should it not just cut the front two layers?

(3) and last but not least, I have seen some levels take for example the first garden level that has high mountain top with the green material layed nice and flowing on the top. is that just a case of building the base structure, adding the green felt then trimming it to match the countour?

One thing that helps me is anytime I want separate paths across 3 layers is to use 3 separate layers. Plus if the edges are exposed and natural terrain, it just looks better to have them vary in shape working back.

There are a bunch of tricks to do quite a bit of what your doing, but it also depends on the shapes you are wanting to do. For example make a 1 thick layer in the back and replicate and pull it forward to render. Then cut the back layer with the shape tool or better yet the corner editor. However to see it better.. do the opposite. Make your back layer, cut it out then copy and pull it forward making it a thin or a thick layer depending on what you want. Then fill that in to cover the passage way. If you need to see it later, you can make the front layer glass for a bit or just move it or make it thin and move it depending on what all you are wanting. I suggest experimenting on simple shapes in an empty level to get the hang of it all as there is no set way to do any of this and also depends how comfy you are with the tools and what exactly you are wanting to build.

On your 2nd question, it just does that.. lol and why I usually use 3 separate layers as it is easier to control the depths of the cuts / paths you are wanting to achieve.

Again.. there are a few ways to achieve that, but the corner editor is your best friend for most stuff. Drawing anything with the shape tools like mountains and landscape will eat up your thermo very quickly. I think in the Tutorials TheAdipose and Luos have some really cool tutorials for designing some caves that you might be interested in and covers some of these topics.

Good luck!
