Final Fantasy XIVOnline -downer-

Archive: 8 posts

*Sigh*

At first I was excited about this game, I even planned on gettingh it. But now I find out that there is a monthly fee. It's only 12.99 (way cheaper than WOW) but wait theres more. Not only is there a monthly fee but there is a fatigue system in the game that prevents you from gaining too much exp for any one weapon class or job. Its works like this, the amount of exp you gain in a class is determined by how much time you spend gaining exp for that specific weapon class (a maximum of 8 hours considering that you are exp grinding perfectly). Now I have no problem with the fatigue system (because I doubt I'll play that long anyway) but, if they're gonna limit gameplay like that I don't think they should be charging a monthly fee...

*Sigh* I cant say that I am definetly not going to get the game because of that reason, Its mainly because I want I want my friends to get it too, I doubt though that they'll be too thrilled about the monthly fee thing as well (and I don't want to quest about without muh bestest friends thur). :
Why Sqaure-Enix? Why!?

(I understand that they need to make money to maintain and improve the game, I mean have you seen the graphic? pretty **** sweet for an MMO >.<, but I'm not made out of money so...*get shotgun* its either you or me, Sqaure-Enix)

I love final fantasy games, but I can't see spending full price on a game, then spending another 12.99 per month! If I played it for a year I would have spend over 215 on just one game. Doesn't make sense to me. I understand they need to charge to maintain their servers, but still... I guess I'm cheap lol2010-10-22 14:44:00

TBH I don't see the point on paying a subscription to most MMO's, no subscription based game will break WOW for the forseeable future.

The reason people will pay for WOW is the giant community and the fact it has such great support in updates and expansions.
The only MMO's that even compare are those with no subscription fees such as guild wars. This is because you pay for your game and you get it.

FF14 really isn't going to scratch the player base that other MMOs do, and it is too far from the normal FF's to get a lot of that audience on board (only the extremely hardcore)

The only reason it is a worthwhile game to make is because the name final fantasy sells.

It is not and will not ever be a really good game.

I apologise for comparing it too WOW but it has to be done, you cannot have an MMO and not compare it to blizzards giant. Lets just say that FF14 is not David.

No, its cool. No MMO could be as worth paying for as WOW (I've played, lost a year of my life to it ). Hopeefully SE will drop the monthly fee eventually, of course they'll have to refund a butt load of money afterwards.2010-10-22 17:44:00

The FFXIV beta didnt impress me at all. I dont get why they would make a MMO with that good graphic. Because it lagged, to the point of being unplayable.

WoW graphics are clever, like shadows painted on the texture of the ground, etc. To make it playable one any laptop or whatever.

While FFXIV targets those with super computers? really? an MMO?

Seems like a fun game overall, just pity that I cant play it. ^^

( Maybe the lagg was because of unstable servers during beta, but I highly doubt it. )

I was a longtime FFXI player and payed the monthly fee all the way (before I went cold turkey) but the only remote chance I'll play XIV is if they do major overhauls to it. From what I hear from all the reviews, it has a lot of problems that need addressing.

That's not to say XI was perfect (far from it) but it clawed it's way up to gain significant success which, while never matching WoWs, was quite substantial. That sort of makes XIV's many shortcomings all the more apparent because you should expect SE to be able to properly apply all the lessons in all the years they spent honing XI that XIV would show even more promise right out of the box instead of introducing several new and inconvienent gamepley mechanics along with technical hiccups.

It actually is quite sad that SE asked major gaming publications to avoid reviewing the game until a later date (though I don't think anyone of them listened), almost as if they were too embarrassed with what they were (or weren't) able to accomplish by the time of the beta launch. Considering how superficial and incomplete FFXIII also felt upon it's debute after years of development this doesn't really speak well of SE's current output ability, especially in light of the fact that SE's head publisher noted not long ago that Japanese game developers (and by association, SE itself) were falling behind their Western counterparts in terms of gameplay.

I know next to nothing about MMO's .. so keep that in mind The reason I know nothing is because I don't want to pay tons of $ to play a game. I feel that if I buy it, then I should be able to play it, period. As I've said before, I understand that they need to make money to keep their servers up to par, and probably other stuff that I'm not aware. My question is, couldn't companies who put out MMO's have sponsors, so the gaming public wouldn't have to empty their pockets? Would that be an odd thing to do? I'm not saying there ought to be commercials from the sponsors during loading screens (wouldn't that be crazy!?), but maybe a 'brought to you by' section in the opening credits?

Also, as I sit here, just above where I'm typing is a WOW advertisement that's playing over and over. Who pays for that? Probably the gamers - that's a guess. If it worked the other way around (maybe it does..not sure?), the websites ought to pay a certain amount just so they can play the WOW advertisement on their page. This type of advertisement only enhances their website, so why wouldn't they want to pay for it? Again, another way to alleviate some cost to the gamer.

I feel strongly that if companies want their games to be successful, they need to do whatever it takes to get more gamers to play their games. And the only way they'll do that is if they stop charging so much money for one game. Is that a fair assessment or am I missing something?

EDIT - just thought of something else.. I think DLC is very sneaky in that it gets us gamers to pay more money in the long run for the same game. Companies (even Mm to an extent) have been making me think that I ought to wait for the game of the year edition so I only spend $60 instead of $90 (I've spent about $90 [110 if you include the strategy guide] total just on LBP .. craziness, but it's kind of an addiction lol). Sorry for straying from the FF topic .. but I think the original FF post touched on some bigger issues.
