As part of the 50th Spotlight celebration, we are unveiling...

Spotlight Search Engine (http://spotlight.lbpcentral.com)
Version 2.0

We've been working hard on a bunch of changes that we think will make the tool even more useful for you, the members of LBPCentral. Most of these changes were based on suggestions and feedback from the first release, so thank you all for the kind words and great ideas!

Some of the changes are strictly aesthetic in nature (new graphics and some animation), while others change and/or augment the functionality. The first thing you may notice is your LBPCentral user name in the upper right. If you are a guest here on LBPC, you will not be able to see or use all of the new features, but the basics will all still be there for you.

New Features:

User authentication, which is necessary for the next feature...
Played Level Tracking System
New configuration options, including:

Randomization options
Filtering of played levels
Group updates of played levels

Level links to Showcase threads.
Help page

Details:

New look and feel:
We've spiced things up just a bit with some graphical buttons and animation:

Level Tracking System:
With the user authentication in place, we are now able to store in our database all the levels that you mark as having been played by you. You can:

Mark levels as played:

http://content.screencast.com/users/v0rtex/folders/Jing/media/970c9589-6a16-4327-98fe-b0d5123065b8/2010-10-17_0040.png

Track your plays:

http://content.screencast.com/users/v0rtex/folders/Jing/media/7dfd39e4-9d9c-4465-adef-33dc533d570c/2010-10-17_0106.png

Filter by played (or better yet... unplayed).
This option is in the Extra Stuff panel:

http://content.screencast.com/users/v0rtex/folders/Jing/media/5106face-abbd-4910-80af-02808de36b5c/2010-10-17_0042.png

Mark all levels in your most recent search as played (or unplayed).
Also in the Extra Stuff panel:

http://content.screencast.com/users/v0rtex/folders/Jing/media/33cdce03-7184-482c-b514-b874442dde02/2010-10-17_0043.png

This feature is really great if you want to mark all the levels of a particular spotlight episode, or all the levels from a particular creator. Just make your selection, run your search, and then in one quick action mark them all.

Randomization options:
The "Surprise Me!" button (shown above) will produce a quick random list of levels to go play.

You can control how many levels are randomly picked.
Again... in the Extra Stuff panel:

http://content.screencast.com/users/v0rtex/folders/Jing/media/784d9b99-7931-4ebf-a829-969a0b575afb/2010-10-17_0104.png

The played levels filtering (above) will affect what's returned on the random lists.

Level Showcase links
Click on any level...

http://content.screencast.com/users/v0rtex/folders/Jing/media/1fe8ae82-a350-4742-b721-38753ba070a5/2010-10-17_0137.png

...and we will open the LBPCentral Level Showcase thread for that level.

Help
The Help button http://lbpcspotlights.dwbaker.net/images/help_button_0.png will produce this page:

http://lbpcspotlights.dwbaker.net/images/LBPCSSE-Tutorial-v2.0.png

That's it! We sure hope you enjoy using it as much we enjoyed creating it for you!

This is better than lbp.me - all levels are on there, but in the search engine are only levels that have received the Spotlight's seal of awesomeness Thanks for this - although I should say it's not identifying me correctly; I'll keep trying.2010-10-20 23:13:00

Well now, I thought Aya fixed this issue, but I believe that when you log on to LBPC you have to check the box that says "Remember me". I know you have to be logged on to LBPC in the same browser that you open the Search Engine. If this isn't your situation ("remember me" is checked) then we may have to wait until tomorrow and ask Aya to look into it.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem (Search Engine does not recognize your LBPC identity)?

And, um... yeah, Ranger... ahem... I love you too?

Yeah it's not recognizing me. Also the surprise me button doesn't seem to do anything either. I love the concept of it though!

That should be fixed. This may be a different problem.

To anyone having problems getting the Search Engine to recognize them, can you specify which web browser you're using, and what version?

Well - credit where credit is due...

Aya put together a nice little script that extracts the thread links from the Spotlight and creates a bunch of SQL INSERT statements. I just run those over my database, and voila! ... links!

So the real credit goes to Aya for the script, but mostly to the Spotlighters for getting all that set up in each and every spotlight thread.

Really nice work on this v0rtex and Aya - what an incredible feature! I'm having a ton of fun with the random feature. It's like LBP meets my iPod. 2010-10-21 07:25:00

When I try and do it it just shows a new page which has some weird dealership thing on the top. It doesn't bring up the [U]actual spotlight.

Please try and fix this.

Thanks! I'm most grateful for the 'Suprise Me!' button, it really helps to be given a random level, and I couldn't work out how to do a random search on the last one. Thanks!2010-10-22 08:27:00

I am on Windows Vista Home 64bit using Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18975

No matter what I do, I am always a guess in the spotlight search engine page.

A useful bug report. Finally.

I shudder to think of all the terrible bug reports that MM must get for the LBP2 beta.

However, it was kinda unnecessary in retrospect, as I found the forum actually tracks which browsers people are using anyway.

Based on that it seems to be only affecting IE (8 or 9) or Safari (4 or 5). I have a working plan on how to fix it, so I just need to wait until v0rtex is available.

OK - After some trial and tribulation, we (Aya042 and I) believe we have sorted out the issue with certain browsers not authenticating correctly.

If you have posted here that you only show up as Guest in the Search Engine, we would greatly appreciate if you could try again and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your patience and for helping us to get to the bottom of this little bug!

Ok, this time it worked. For the first time I was able to see the pure awesomeness of the search engine

Before it just showed the advert at the top.
