Tutorial: How to make a working hovercar

Archive: 9 posts

First thing is to get a block of a light material, like cardboard, and make the shape of the ship you want, http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2038/hovercarexamp1.jpg we'll use the frame for the original which i made, as shown above, make sure that there are flat planes on the bottom, a place for sackboy to stand, and is not too small, which would make it difficult to control. once you have that, put a small circle of sponge near where sackboy is to stand, so that he can activate the hovercar, and don't forget to put your grab switch on the sponge, heres an example, http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/8117/hovercarexamp2.jpg, once you have that done, get three rockets and place them away from the car, make them smaller, and then lower the power to about one sixth max power, and then place one on either end, and one in the center, make sure the end ones are facing slightly outwards, so that they push against each other when on, and that the back one is facing more horizontally <---> than the front one, then hook up the switch. http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/954/hovercarexamp3.jpg once that is done, you begin the calibration process, (which i will warn you now is difficult and very, vey frustrating), get in and test the car, just to see if they are miraculously already calibrated, if not, then every time after you test it, add a couple of taps of the d-pad arrow to increase the power of each rocket, make sure it is by the same amout for each. once you start to get off the ground, you should notice that one side is stronger than the other, lower the power of the stronger side by one d-pad arrow hit to the left, and increase the right by a small amount using the anologue stick. continue to fidgit around with each of the rocket's power until it can hover for approx. five seconds without tipping quickly to one side or the other, make sure that sackboy isn't leaning toward either side, tugging on the sponge, which can also cause tipping. After you have everything so that it floats and drifts, or glides forward, you have it calibrated correctly, you can start learning how to control it, to control it, make sackboy push or pull on the sponge he's grabbing to make it lean in that direction, which makes it move in that direction, while doing this, you can learn the flip limits, which is the angle at which the car flips, after a bit of testing, it gets very simple to drive. Another tip, longer skinnier body styles are easier to handle, because it is more balanced.

As you can see it is a long and complicated process, but i have made three different models using this method, so i know it works. it is time consuming, and it is very frustrating. but if yoyu perservere, you should come out with a working hovercar.

EDIT* i just realized i put this in the wrong category T.T please move it to the Tutorials... T.T ( would move it on my own if i could. I feel bad about this.....)

Thank you for the complement, and yes i do agree, CALIBRATION IS THE WORST,
EXTRA DOUBLE, AFTER THE POST WARNING: CALIBRATION IS TEDIOUS, HARD, AND AGGRIVATING, DO NOT COMPLAIN IF IT TAKES YOU AN HOUR AND A HALF TO MAKE A HOVERCAR, IT TOOK ME THREE. Also, Please comment, comments are always appreciated, i need to know what you guys think of my tutorial. it helps me as a poster to know how to better convey what i need to say.

If anyone has any problems, ask me and i will see what i can do to solve them. and, if it has anything to do with the calibration, i may have to meet you in-sack to help ( which because of my schedule could take awhile. ). oh, and please do post pictures of your hovercars when you're done! i want to see what kinds of hovercars people can make with my technique. thanks.2010-10-24 23:29:00

How to make a Working Hovercar V 2.0

V 2.0 is a hovercar that uses a track system, designed to be used in levels, rather than just as a toy, like V 1.0. This version needs to have a track to run on, so, I suggest, that if you are going to use this to make a level, that you have the landscape you are going to make the hovercar cross already made before you start making it, and that you are able to make the track one the bottom, or within, that landscape so that the hovercar will go where you want it. Also, if you are having trouble with making your track, or anything within this tutorial, just ask.

1. First thing, you need to make the track, to do this, determine how far below the surface, which is the area where the hovercar will be on the ground, before it takes off, that the track will need to be. Then, make the track so that it stays that distance below the ground, and follows how you want the hovercar to move, so that it will follow the ground, or whatever your landscape happens to be. The track needs to be lined with ice ( glass )

2. make two small circles of ice, not too big, within the track, (if yours is within the landscape, and there is stuff on both sides of it, the circles must fit inside. if not, then you dont have that restriction. ) Then, make the body of the hovercar, whatever it is. Then, connect the body to the circles like the following diagram shows, ( brown= string grey= rod blue=glass red=cardboard ( hoveracr body ) green= landscape black=rockets purple arrows= direction rocket is pointing ) http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2418/hovercar20tutorial.png Now, to make the hovercar work, just follow the above tutorial ( except for the balancing of rockets, just make them powerfull enough to lift it up. ) if you wnat to make it so that it will start hovering before sackboy grabs the go switch, then add a sensor switch ( one that sensors sackboy ) and set it so that it will detect sackboy when he gets in the seat, or a button, but a button would not look as good. so, i suggest sensor switch.
