How to share levels: The Magic Crater Method

Archive: 27 posts

More and more collaborative create projects are showing up in the world of LBP PSP these days, and that is a very good thing. Multiple creators from around the globe are coming together to create tutorials, level packs, contests, even holiday celebrations. The problem is that there's no particularly easy way to share levels between creators without publishing them as copyable, which is usually not too desirable.

Through a process of trial and error (and with the help of jeffcu28 and the rest of the Kindred team), I have come up with a relatively streamlined way to transfer levels securely back and forth between creators via e-mail: The "Magic Crater" method. This means of level transfer is secure, reliable, and once you get the hang of it very quick and easy. But first, something unpleasant:

The Magic Crater method is intended only to be used as a tool for collaborating on community projects, distributing levels for beta testing, and sharing objects and creations with trusted community members. This method is not intended to support cheating, pirating, use of CFW, or any other morally questionable activity.

Alright, with that out of the way let's get started.

Before you begin

BACK UP YOUR ENTIRE PROFILE. I assume you all know how to do this (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=19461-The-corrupt-profile-thread-(Back-up-your-data-NOW!)) already, but if you don't just ask. But really, PLEASE back up your data NOW. We will be messing with system files located inside your LBP profile folder, and you simply must have a backup file in order to proceed. If you crash your profile and lose all of your save data, don't say I didn't warn you. Here, let me put things a little more simply:

If you do not make a backup right now, somewhere a squirrel will die.

Please, do it for the squirrels.

Overview
The Magic Crater method is based on the alternate level restoration method jeffcu28 came up with in late 2009, as well as the Full Moon means of level sharing. Basically, we will be digging into LBP's file system and replacing old level files with new ones. It sounds scary and confusing at first, but the concept is really quite simple. Just take it slow and ask lots of questions if you don't understand one of the steps.

The first thing you need to do is identify what we will call the "Magic Crater". That's a stupid name, yes, but you won't forget it anytime soon now will you? The Magic Crater is located at the VERY TOP of My Moon, right near where the string attaches. The magic crater is easily identifiable because it is a stand-alone crater space, as opposed to the clusters of craters found elsewhere on My Moon. The Magic Crater is the only stand-alone crater at the top of My Moon:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-009.png

Why this specific crater? Well, isolating and re-using a single crater allows us to isolate the system files associated with this particular location on My Moon. This one just so happens to be very easy to find.

Sending a level
Sending someone else a level using the Magic Crater is an easy process that only takes a few minutes.

The Short Version
Choose the level you want to share
Copy your level into the Magic Crater
Quit LBP and connect your PSP to a computer
Identify your level files and copy them to your computer
Share your level

Sending Step 1 - Choose the level you want to share
Locate the level on My Moon that you want to send someone and select it by pressing 'X'. Scroll to the right two pages by pressing 'R' twice, then select "copy":

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-005.png

Sending Step 2 - Copy your level into the Magic Crater
Navigate to the Magic Crater and press 'X' to create a copy of your level:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-007.png

(Note: It is very important to always copy levels - NEVER select 'move'. Levels located in the Magic Crater are overwritten and deleted often, and you don't want to lose the original version of your creation.)

When you are done, a copy of your level should be located in the Magic Crater:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-008.png

Sending Step 3 - Quit LBP and connect your PSP to a computer
Press your PSP's 'home' button and select "quit game" - this will bring up your PSP's main menu (aka "XMB"). Connect your PSP to a computer using a USB cable. (Note: You may need to choose "USB Connection" from the XMB before you will be able to access the files on your PSP.)

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-011.png

HINT: Now would be an excellent time to run that backup.
Remember the squirrels.

Sending Step 4 - Identify your level files and copy them to your computer
Browse to your LBP profile folder, which is under PSP > SAVEDATA. For NA region games the profile folder is called UCUS98744PROFILE, and for EU region games it is UCES01264PROFILE. Here is the folder as it appears on my computer:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-003.png

There are a LOT of files in this folder, but don't be afraid.

Each My Moon level in LBP PSP is represented by five different system files. Each of these files has the same prefix but different extensions, which makes them easy to identify.

We are looking for five files that begin with "52." Specifically, they are: 52.CBF, 52.LBF, 52.LVL, 52.MBF, 52.MIP. Here are the files on my PSP:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-004.png

Select all five of these files and copy them to your computer. Do not change the names of these files or else they will not work when shared. I recommend putting them somewhere convenient and easy to find, such as on your desktop. If you are having trouble finding these files, try sorting the UCUS98744PROFILE folder alphabetically.

Sending Step 5 - Share your level
That's it! You now have a copy of your level files on your computer, and you can do with them whatever you like. The files are small and easily e-mailed to a friend for collaboration, sharing, etc. You can also post them on a download site such as a personal webspace, FTP site, or Dropbox account for easier distribution to a team. For convenience, you can "zip" them together into a single compressed file (e.g., .zip, .rar) that you can rename whatever you like.

Receiving a level
Receiving and installing a level via the Magic Crater is also a very simple process once you get used to the steps. Locate the Magic Crater on My Moon as described above and proceed with the steps below.

The Short Version
Create a blank level in the Magic Crater
Download the new level files to your computer
Quit LBP and connect your PSP to a computer
Copy the files to your PSP
Launch LBP and open the new level

Receiving Step 1 - Create a blank level in the Magic Crater
Before you can receive and install someone else's level, you will need to make sure that the Magic Crater is not empty. It doesn't matter what level is in the Magic Crater, but there has to be something in it. If there is no level located in the Magic Crater, simply create a new blank level and exit immediately back to the main menu after saving.

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-010.png

Note: We will be overwriting the level in the Magic Crater, so make sure it isn't anything that you want to keep.

Receiving Step 2 - Download the new level files to your computer
Each My Moon level in LBP PSP is represented by five different system files. Each of these files has the same prefix but different extensions, which makes them easy to identify. The files we are interested all begin with "52." - they are named: 52.CBF, 52.LBF, 52.LVL, 52.MBF, 52.MIP. You must have all five of these specific files or the level will not work on your PSP. Also, do not change the names of any of these files or - you guessed it - they will not work.

If someone has e-mailed you a set of level files, you will need to save them to your computer. I recommend saving them somewhere convenient and easy to find, such as on your desktop. Of course, you should only accept files from people you trust.

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-015.png

If nobody has sent you level files but you would still like to test out this method, I have prepared a set of sample levels for you to use. Click here (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6766207/Magic_Crater_test.zip) to download them. These files are contained in a compressed .zip file that you will need to extract or "unzip" before you can use them. (These test files are for a blank level that contains the command module object from my first two Space Corps levels. It is DLC-free, and you are welcome to use it as you like. Enjoy!)

HINT: I'm going to remind you again to run a backup at this point.
You don't want a squirrel's blood on your little sack-hands, do you?

Receiving Step 4 - Copy the files to your PSP
Browse to your LBP profile folder, which is under PSP > SAVEDATA. For NA region games the profile folder is called UCUS98744PROFILE, and for EU region games it is UCES01264PROFILE. Here is the folder as it appears on my computer:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-003.png

Select the five files that you just downloaded and drag them directly into this folder. You will get a dialog box asking if you want to overwrite these files - choose 'Yes to All'.

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-016.png

Receiving Step 5 - Launch LBP and open the new level
Launch LBP, go to My Moon, and locate the Magic Crater. If you've done everything right, you will have a brand new level in place of the one that used to be there: (Note: The icon for the test level mentioned above is a red 'X'.)

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Magic%20Crater%20tutorial/2010-10-16-008.png

Assuming that there are no problems with DLC (see "DLC Issues" below), you should be able to edit and play this new level freely.

DLC Issues
One of the key problems with sharing levels is downloadable content. Specifically, if a level contains DLC that you do not own, you will not be able to play or edit the level. Conversely, if you send someone else a level with DLC that they do not own, they will not be able to play or edit it either. This issue is not specific to the Magic Crater method; any shareable community level that you copy to My Moon is constrained by DLC ownership in this same way.

Levels are very sensitive to downloadable content. Adding any DLC will permanently "flag" that level as containing the DLC, even if it is removed. For example, you've created a level containing absolutely nothing but basic wood. It is not flagged as containing DLC, which means anybody can play and edit the level after receiving it. If you place a single sticker from The Gardens level pack, the level is now flagged as containing The Gardens DLC, and only people who own this DLC will be able to play and edit the level. Even if you later remove the sticker, the level will remain flagged as containing The Gardens DLC.

Nearly any use of DLC content will flag a level. This includes stickers, materials, backgrounds, sound objects, and music objects. It is suspected that using a DLC pack sticker as a level icon will also flag a level as containing that DLC, but this has yet to be confirmed. It does not appear as though wearing a DLC-specific costume while creating will flag a level.

It is recommended to participants of collaborative community projects to limit levels to basic materials only until the very end of the creation process. As the last step before publishing the level, a designated team member (or members) should decorate with stickers, change the background, and add sound objects.

Sharing the love, ehh?
I'm surprised no one posted yet because this is the most useful way of transfering levels.

This sounds very useful, it is possible to use any crater, right? That specific one is just easy to find.
Because sending let's say 5 levels would be kinda annoying if I had to start the game, move the level, then quit the game, go through the files and then go to LBP and move the level to another place and then do that until all levels are transfered.

Not that I would need this right now, but I might need someone to record my LOST GOLD levels for me so that I can make a trailer before the release...

Yes indeed! You're totally right about the convenience thing - this method has worked really well for us recently.

I've been meaning to post an updated version of this for a while now, and with all the other community projects out there popping up I figured I might as well make it a public post.

I would assume this is how you got the levels for creator spotlight pspBingo. With more PSP Creator Spotlights on the way, this sort of thing will be happening a lot more often too.

EDIT: Missed one!

It is possible to use this method with any of the craters (or sets of craters) on My Moon, assuming you know the file names associated with those specific craters. I've limited my method to a single crater just to make things less confusing. It would be a little clunky if you wanted to transfer 5 or 6 levels at once. Not impossible, just annoying.

Not that I would need this right now, but I might need someone to record my LOST GOLD levels for me so that I can make a trailer before the release... Hah, I wonder who that could be??

Sure, just let me know. My schedule has been pretty consistently way-too-busy since about July, but I should be able to fit that in somewhere. Just make sure you give me as much heads-up as possible because it might take me a week to get around to doing the actual recording.

Thanks Taffey! I've always known that save data is a computer file, I'm surprised I didn't think of this. Anyway, this will be very helpful for me with the logic pack community project, since I have to send and receive a lot of levels/objects.2010-11-04 00:33:00

Erm.......well....have you been to littlebigland.com?

Have you noticed in text entries theres a sub-part thingy that says upload attachment? Is it possible to upload the level file to a post on LBL that way?

Because a special group over there is starting to make a level series, and I'm leading it, so I need to know how to get the level files to them, is the only way to e-mail them?

I have indeed, managed to disprove that.
I own no DLC whatsoever, but the LBPC Beginner Pack uses the "I love LBP" sticker as an icon. I copied that to MyMoon fine, and was able to muck around with it. I then decided to remove everything in the level apart from the LBP Central Logo which I then used in the Logic Pack. Yes! That logo is in the exact same position where Alismuffin left it in the Beginner Pack. I also kept the icon, and voila! The Logic pack
I don't think you need to worry about that.

You can get a free account that allows up to 2GB storage, and you can share links to uploaded files for your team to download. Works great.

My guess is that there's some software on your computer using that extension, and so it thinks it knows what it is.

Anyway, it should still work as long as you have 5 different files starting with "52", regardless of whether or not you can see the extensions.

I'm thought of as a Master.

Anyway,

1How do I check how many thanked posts I have. Be exact

Your number of thanked posts determines your reputation. You can check you reputation by a little 6 point star at the bottom left of your posts. I think each thanks somebody gets, earns them 2 rep. Just do the math, and you will get your answer.(I can't figure it out, because I can't see you rep.)

2 Is there really no more DLC?

By what AceCreator says, there is no more DLC. :/
