A Creators Average Creation Time

I need advice from an experienced creator. I'm in the process of planning a horror level. I know now that I want to plan it out on paper but I want to know: How long does it take you to create a level, from planning to completion? I know everyone works at a different speed but if I had an average, it would help me out a lot. Thanks alot in advance! :star:2010-10-17 04:28:00

The time your level takes will be directly proportionate to how good it looks. It seems like a really simple concept, but levels still get rushed, and a rushed level is always missing something.
I find it's hard to put a really concrete amount of time on creation like "a month" or something, simply because all our ideas of "a month" may be a little different -- there are many less hours in the month to play LBP for, say, engineering students and full-time workers then there are for the self-and-un-employed. Think I'd have to say on average I spend 80-100hrs on stuff, depending on what kind of level it is. Most of it never gets published, naturally, and I think if I were to publish a lot of it, it would probably necessitate another 15+ hrs of work for each level.
Bottom line?

Though I've never actually finished a level, I know that Steve_Big_Guns takes about a hundred hours to make a full length level.
This seems about average for a lot of creators. Just take as much time as you need. Remember the Duke Nukem Forever release date:

It all really depends on how familiar and knowledgeable about lbp creation tools you are, if you have no clue then it will take longer, but if you have average skills, then it will take a moderate amount of time. It all depends on how you are with everything that goes into creating (stickers, logic, etc) Just for starters, get really into the logic pack here and learn your logic well, then tinker around with the creation tools, not necessarily work on your level, but get extremely familiar with your game and in the end when you get to actually working on it, you will not have a huge lengthy time spent creating, just because you were fluid in what is what. In my experience I would say that most top levels that are really and mostly spotlighted on this very forum are some 30~ hours stuff.

You will save alot of hours by planning your stuff well. Also, build on pause and test your stuff as you go. As soon as you get something done, test it right away (unpause, try it, rewind). This will also save you some precious time.

about 2 to 7 days... if i haven't finished by the end of a week then i probably got bored with it and started something else. i only create when i'm really inspired, which makes it enjoyable, so i usually don't stop til i'm done, and when i'm not at home i'm probably thinking about it.

i've started noticing that if i map something out in my head, all the problem solving fun is taken out of it, or i just see it from point A to point Z and feel like there's no point in building it lol since i just played it out mentally... so i like to improvise and plan as i go: keeps me motivated.

but rushing yourself can be stressful and take the fun out of the game... you can also end up wanting to revamp half the level after you publish it, when it gets a chance to stew, and the gears keep turning.

Took about week for creating level, obstacles and enemy targets,
Took another week ( or two ) for polishing, decorating and lightning effects.
Finished result: Old Pyramid with some good feedback.

I suggest you start building the level with it's dangers and stuff, later on you finish it by decorating and adding lights n' other stuff. It doesn't matter how long will it take for you, as long as it'll be perfect from your vision.

Most of what I make is music levels, so for that, it generally takes 2 - 6 hours.

But for pretty much anything other than music levels (platformers, racers, puzzlers) can take 2 - 6 weeks depending on what's going on in my life.

A lot of time I procrastinate and take longer than I should to make a level, like with my last LBP1 level Material World. I started it maybe 4 months or so before I published it, but got caught up in other things. I got half the level done in a about week and then did a few bits in between months when I got some satisfactory ideas. Eventually, I just did whatever came to mind, just to get it over with. I probably could've made it better if I didn't get distracted so easily.

Plus a lot of times I lose motivation when something breaks or I can't get a particular thing to work and I just put it off.

Or I just can't think of a perfect element for the level. If you've played any of my levels other than music, you'll notice that a lot of it is random or it seems out of place with the other things in he level.

That's from not being able to keep consistent.

But I think with LBP2, I can do more mini-games, or short levels. Levels that don't require too much time to make. I notice that I have the most fun with multiplayer levels in LBP1, so I think that's what I'll be making the most.

It depends. I hold off publishing a level for weeks a lot of the time so I can make sure its how I want it rather than altering it after publishing. My quickest full (non mini game type) level took me 3 days and the longest took 3 months. when they take longer I creat other levels at the same time as working on 1 level only for weeks or months would get boring, especially since I have so many ideas I want create. i dont know why, but the longer i spend on a level, the less playes it gets. i spent about a week making 1 of my levels and it gets over 11,000 plays, i spend a month on the next level and it get a few hundred plays lol.

i guess my tip would be not to over think about somthing, just make it and if it dont work, start again.
