Craft Earth Crusaders - Top Down Multiplayer Action RPG (1.6 UP NOW and Mm Picked!)

Craft Earth Crusaders is a multiplayer top down action rpg with some leveling elements in it. More action than anything else, but if you've played games like Gauntlet and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, you'll hopefully feel right at home.

So... the story isn't fleshed out yet, but it's just going to make light of a lot of things in the genre, from saving princesses, why they have to slay giant monsters, to saving the world. There will be lots of emphasis on scale in this series, so expect large rooms and giant enemies, although there will be some surprises to say the least.

Classes [which are chosen by the player manually, from the time you spawn]:

-Warrior-
R1 - Slash
R1 x 5 - Wave Slash (short projectile)
Charge R1 - Spin Strike
Triangle - Boomerang

Overdrive R1 - Double Slash
Overdrive R1 x 5 - Double Wave Strike
Overdrive Charge R1 - Super Spin Strike

-Mage-
R1 - Blast (projectile)
R1 x 5 - Triple Blast
Charge R1 - Lightning (looks like force lightning from star wars)
Triangle - Fire Pillar

Overdrive R1 - Homing Blast
Overdrive R1 x 5 - Triple Homing Blast
Overdrive Charge R1 - Super Lightning

Dudeeee, that looks amazing, great use of the 3d layers man, looks like another epic level by gevurah22 is coming to a planet near you! I wonder what other kinds of classes you are coming up with, I like the whole medieval theme you have going on, just a quick suggestion, though you probably have this idea already have and awesome giant boss battle, like a malevolent dragon or golem, that would be a great in-game challenge for 4 friends to be pitted against. Nice music and the whole atmosphere looks great from what you have made so far. Your levels keep growing in awesomness each time! I made that music. It's actually a remix of Ryu's Theme from Street Fighter II.

Amazing! very nice, kinda reminds me of that little big fantasy lv you made during the lbp1 beta with the dragon and stuff (least im pretty sure that was you) anyways, reeealy nice, also that short gundam animation vid u gt was really sweet, great work on music to.
its kinda sad though that lbp2 users might not be able to touch any of the awesome beta levels though :/

Thanks for the UV tool tip. I completely forgot about it and did use it on the castle walls. =)

As for upgrades, I just set them as collecting the blue items. Collect ten and your attacks do get improved, but if you get hurt when you're powered-up, you'll lose your upgrade. It's meant to be very arcade-ish so that the player really doesn't have to think about it and just fight.

And I've finished creating a larger Golem enemy as a part of a larger mob. It's a fun fight where you have to jump and attack his chest in order to damage it. I'll post vids and of the Lavamander boss sometime later on today. ^^

Finally got a couple more hours to burn on LBP2 today, so I put it to good use.

New enemy: Golem

Height is 3 layers tall. Will spit fire when you are far away and will attempt to smash you when up close causing heavy damage (loss of two heart bits). Remember each heart you have is 3 bits, totaling 15 HP.

You have to jump attack it or attack from a high vantage point on its chest to inflict damage.

New Item: Heart container - Fills your health to full. Is dropped by a Golem or can be found randomly in barrels.

Other changes:
- You lose 20 points for every hit you take.
- Powerup is now lost after taking 2 hits instead of 1.
- You will take damage when in the lava.

No reset, you'll only have one hit left. I'm still play testing to see if I should stick with that or perhaps add another hit, but I do want the player to still take lots of caution with it.

And I've made great progress with the Lavamander boss as it's moving exactly the way I want it to with all the layer glitches. ^^


I just took a look at this video again and I have a random question, what do you take your video with, how much does it cost, and where can I get it?

It's an HD-PVR and I bought it for $249 a year ago from Amazon. It might be cheaper now, but this thing is great and works on both PC/MAC.

I was planning on a gameplay style like this for one of my projects, but it looks like I'll need to tweak it to make it more unique. Normally I would be mad that a creator got to a concept before me, since they normally don't put much effort into it. This is different though, this is EPIC! And I am happy you are implementing this concept because it seems you are going to use it to it's full potential.

Woot. Just finished up with Lavamander. Gonna just finalize a skeleton tutorial really quick, fill up some patches and attempt to work in some multiplayer so that people can at least play a bit. I've had it since day one, tbh, but I don't have the gift of time like it may seem. I'd probably have a better grip on the tools if I could devote day in and day out like some of these peeps on LBPC (=P), but work, uni grant work, and grad school have kept me from really finishing all my ideas. Needless to say, I would have been done with several full levels if I had all the time in the world! Thanks though! I'm no logic head, but this stuff clicks with me. ^^

And as an update, I haven't quite got the level ready for completion as of yet. =( I ended up taking too much time working on visual details than setting up multiplayer last night so I never published it, lol. Anyway, I've been drawing up a checkpoint system at work during meetings for multiplayer so hopefully I can implement that tonight, assuming I finish a report that's due today. xD

Also, I've also come up with another way to lose your power-up... by sacrificing it for a mega attack. >=D

Other than that, the level is running smooth. I might add some mini lavamanders as a mob to the big boss fight.

Dunno yet. I guess it would look like a summon in a sense with the large AoE multi-hit effect.


Definitely looking epic! How long would you estimate the entire level would take someone to play all the way through when it's finished? =D

When I played it last night, it took about... > 10 minutes. There are several Golems that take some time to kill on top of the Lavamander boss taking about almost 5 minutes to defeat. Tack on about another 10 minutes for newcomers and I'd say about a 15-20 minute length timeframe for this hack and slash. A lot longer than I'd thought it'd be. Plus it's set to versus so hopefully there's a little competitive streak with more than one player since drops go straight to the player who picks them up.

Also, now that we're talking about score, I'm thinking about implementing a "quick cure" type move that requires 1,000 points to do. Granted there are several hearts in the level, if you're running low and need a hand, a little score sacrifice will go a long way in keeping you living. ^^

And one more thing... I do plan on making this a recurring series with the crusaders visiting the Azure Palace next, lol.

Well, I'm gonna put a checkpoint system in there so you'll have multiple lives... so hopefully that happens tonight. ^^ I'll also be tweaking the health of some of the enemies as I'd like for people to experience the boss, lol.

As for wanting to know how I did stuff, just ask. =)

Okay, several big additions were made last night:

Controls - changed the right stick to point your character in the direction you're facing, so if you're pressing up, your Sackboy will point up. Press left, look to the left, etc.
Enemy changes - Archers now have 1HP. Golems have only 5, but can take multiple hits on the legs before receiving 1HP damage. Lavamander HP dropped as well. Removed 3rd Golem near the boss and replaced it with an ambush of Mace Knights
Checkpoint system - If players die, there are 2 spawn points in the game, one at the beginning and one at the mid-way point. The mid-way point will activate once you manually traverse your way after the first Golem spawn.
Control Prompt: In the event you forget what the controls are, button prompts on the bottom of the screen appear, i.e. R1 - Attack, X - Jump, etc.

Upcoming:
- Canceling the intro.
- Mage class
- Optional control scheme: 1 control stick movement a la Link to the Past
- Secondary attacks
- More enemies: mini Lavamander riders, etc.

I'm gonna stuff this thing until it's at 101%! Any other ideas for classes?

I don't think its just relegated to that particular instance as I've had the game crash on me while playing online in less intensive levels. I'll see if I can decrease the slowdown somewhat, but I always thought it worked similar to those bullet hells where the bullets fill up the screen and the slow down helps you navigate easier, lol.2010-10-20 18:53:00

So, here are some ideas of classes:
- White mage (this should be cool in multiplayer mode).
- Necromancer (spawn beasts that attack for him).
- Something that fly xD! (This one isn't serious xD, but you can keep it anyway).
- Archer (yeah, I know this one is not that good...).
And that's it!

Hey, this level is looking absolutely amazing. I just have a couple of questions that I would greatly appreciate if you answered so that I can stop going to bed in tears because my mind is so boggled:

1) How did you do the health system and make certain attacks do a certain damage and certain enemies being stronger than others?
2) How did you make the sword, a hologram I believe, do damage to the enemies?
3) Can you emit object in this game that have switches attatched to other un-emitted objects? For example, how do you make it so that after 5 of those blue things are collected they go into an overdrive mode if the blue object are emitted? I was somehow never able to do that in lbp 1.

I think I speak for many, many people when I say that if you a video showing all of your creation secrets, that would be greatly appreciated. I would understand though if you didn't want to give your knowledge away. Anyway, this level looks amazing and keep up the good work!

1) the health system is a series of multiple counters counting upward with each counter representing a piece of the life bar.
2) I just have a tag that gets activated on the sword whenever I press the attack button that's timed with a sequencer.
3) That's actually simple counter logic. The logic on the knight or mage counts up every time it gets in the vicinity of one power up.

LOL. No worries. I use a very similar logic setup, but I use a sequencer instead. Much more elegant in that regard.

Firstly, make sure the controlinator is visible. For some reason, if you have it invisible, it will appear to be side-mounted in Play Mode. Second, make sure it isn't side-mounted. =)

Congrats on being mm picked you totally deserve it for making this awesome level.
the boss was kinda hard though lol. love the gameplay now i can't wait for the story

Just saw CEC get Mm Picked in the beta. =)

I'll start working on a third class in commemoration, lol.

Will the classes possibly be the classic Warrior-Mage-Theif-Archer set-up?

Sadly I'm not in the beta but here are my thoughts:

I've always been a fan of your Jehuty levels in LBP 1 and I think this completely out does anything you've done!

Although I think there is one problem...
When the full game is released you will have to recreate all of it.

I was thinking about any suggestions and all I can think of is this:
2 Classes

Assassin/Rogue/Whatever you wanna call it

R1 - Throwing star (Medium Range)
R1 x 5 - Triple Throwing star (Medium Range)
Charge R1 - Throw Bomb (Small AOE)
Triangle - Shadow strike (Sends A hologram version of character towards enemy dealing damage to everybody in a line)

Overdrive R1 - Giant throwing star (Medium Range)
Overdrive R1 x 5 - Triple Giant Throwing Star (Medium Range)
Overdrive Charge R1 - Triple Bombs (Each with small AOE)

Healer/Priest/Whatever you wanna call it

R1 - Light Ball (If hit enemy deals damage if hit teammate heal him/her)
R1 x 5 - Light Barrage (Sends light balls off eight directions of character)
Charge R1 - Heal AOE (Heals teammates within circle around healer)
Triangle - Heal Self

Overdrive R1 - Light Beam (Same effect as light ball except with a line AOE)
Overdrive R1 x 5 - Light Beam Barrage (Same effect as light barrage except with line AOE)
Overdrive Charge R1 - Greater Heal AOE (Bigger AOE than Heal AOE)

Believe it or not, I can't add too much more considering I'm taking up around 95% of the thermo in that particular level. =/

The only thing that can be added is another class, which I was thinking Heavy/Paladin or something silly like that. If I can pop in more, I will definitely try, but I'm ready to move on to the next "stage."

I don't know if it's because of the video not showing everything (Not the trailer video the game play ones), or if there is a lot of hidden logic that takes up more than I would think!
Also the 3D layer glitch might be a reason for the thermo being so high.

Also I must say that the trailer video is Epic!

And one last question to wrap this all up...
How will you make the Heavy/Paladin different from the warrior?

It's compensating for 4 players, multiple checkpoints with 2 classes to include the nutty logic involved in each class, lots of background stuff going on, etc. If it weren't for the new lbp2 engine, you probably wouldn't see more than a quarter if this level if it were in lbp1.

As for the heavy, it'll be the tank of the group. Can mass defend, can heal, and has wider attacks. But it'll be slower than both existing classes.
