Perfect BlitzBall on LBP2?

Archive: 13 posts

IDK where this would fit so I put it here but I'm wondering about something in LBP2 beta so here it is:

will it be possible to make a perfect version of blitzball and it's gameplay?

for those who don't know BLITZBALL is a sporting event in the game FINAL FANTASY 10 in which you and a good number of players are enclosed in a giant orb filled with water (don't ask me how they can breath there :kz and use a ball called a blitzball to swim around and try to get it on the opposite goal (very much similar to soccer except you can use your hands to hold the ball and then kick it to the goal)

in the game you would hold the ball with your hands until you're ready to kick the ball into the goal and score for your team

but yeah the game has been an all time great mini game for FFX fans and seeing it in LBP2 would be perfect...but I still question if the gameplay can be replicated and perfected while making the visual look like you're encased in water....or better yet...if you can play this with WATER in it and still be able to shoot the ball around and such

so yeah LBP2 beta testers (hopefully i'll join you soon)....CAN THIS BE DONE?

EDIT: here are some pics to show you how blitzball is:

You can grab water something so yes you can (but not sure if perfect) ofcorse you would need to use sackboys here since sackbots hate water to level of explosion. you can make kicks with movers and wireless controllinator2010-10-13 20:53:00

3D

basically the same side scrolling goodness we're used to

but yeah this isn't really for me to create (I suck at creating) I'm just asking this question to peak someone's curiosity in the hopes that someone will try to make a perfect blitzball level

so I'm hoping there's someone who can make this happen (with real water or visually)

ok now this is really weird! i never knew that this game was real, i created a game when i was little called the exact same thing with almost all the same rules apart from being played under water lol i even wrote down all the rules in a lil simpson sketchbook i had. Was i secretly robbed by square enix?2010-10-13 21:11:00

Well underwater ball game is not hard to invent in head, only think that makes it impossible in reality is water friction, you can't kick things far away in water 2010-10-13 21:35:00

Lol yes i have a tendency to think up some wicked cool ideas to bring to lbp2 lol (and by idea i dont mean i thought of this lol we all know ffx did that but yeah i think of a lot of stuff out of nowhere)

I actually was considering making a blitzball level in lbp1 a while back (it was something I was mulling over for the sports themed level competition). I had a few ideas on how stuff could be done, but never put any serious work into it.

In lbp2, I would leave real water out of it and just go for the illusion of water so that you can use sackbots and keep it confined to the big bubble. It would be a simple matter to use movers on a sackbot to perform kicks and such and it would be easy enough to assign a button to pass and another to shoot, etc. Yeah, it wouldn't be that hard to make at all.

Where this could really shine, though, is in the extra touches. First, you'll want at least four players per team (though five is more standard) and you'll want the player to directly control whichever has the ball, so you'll need special control logic (this has already been successfully demonstrated on the beta forum). You'll need A.I. for the characters who aren't being driven by a player so that they'll know to get between an offensive player and the goal or to try to get into positions to assist their teammates ("I'm open!") You'll need passing logic that's relatively intelligent: if you point the right thumbstick in the general direction of a teammate and press the pass button, the ball should be passed directly to that teammate. If you're going for a semi-faithful recreation of blitzball, you'll want a system for calculating each character's defense and how much they take off the ball's offense and all that (if you've played bb in ffx, you should know what I mean). If you're going for more of a sports game feel (I think this would be better personally), you'll still want some logic to calculate whether a character is able to block/intercept a pass/shot.

And now that we've got a decent setup, let's make it even fancier with special moves and such. In blitzball, Tidus could use a move called the Jecht shot that would knock out two defenders (removing their stats from consideration in whether the ball is blocked). That would be cool to see in a lbp2 version of the game. Performing the move could trigger a pre-recorded kick, the ball will home in on a defender, send them flying, and return to the player for a second kick and so on. Or you could simply give the player a ball-attack command that lets them fire the ball at a defender to knock 'em out of the way. There would be a defense of course: tap R1 at exactly the right moment to catch the ball (A.I. would need to use a randomizer to determine successful catches). There could also be a one-timer move (from hockey): pass to a teammate and hit the shoot button before they receive it and, instead of catching the ball, they'll immediately kick it toward the goal (a good way to get around a defender or goalie without giving them time to react).

This is all just what I came up with off the top of my head. I'm sure if someone with good logic skills and a decent understanding of sports games and blitzball set their mind to it, this could be a great game. I might even want to take a crack at it, though I've already got several projects planned for lbp2, so it might be a while before I get to it.

sounds like I'd want you to do it (you seem to have a perfect understanding of the game, its rules, and how you can implement them in making your own level)

so all thats left is to make some ******* costumes of blitzball players lol

I'm not sure if I'll do it, though the idea certainly does intrigue me and I'm sure I'd have fun with it. It's just that I've already got a lot of projects planned: a new mech that will out-perform every other mech out there ('cuz I'm not ready to not be the number one mech builder) along with an actual level to play it in (my old mechs were nice, but none were precise enough to actually build a level around), a top-down mech level, the sequel to my "War of Souls Chapter One," and a Transformers level/level series. It would be simple to slap together a passable blitzball game, but that just wouldn't be my style--I'd want to go all out and make it as awesome as possible, and that would take more time. Still, I'll tinker with the idea a bit and see if it pulls me in.2010-10-14 23:19:00
