Random mechanics

Opening a thread to jot down and share all the random mechanics I think up for what I eventually might need in my levels. Heres what I was thinking a second a go... Torch or moveable light This set piece would be made of a flaming material and light source attached to a nonflammable material attached to a draggable material. Would all be corner edited and resized to resemble an oversized torch. The torch would also have a magnetic key attached to it. The key could be used to trigger areas that only open if there is a light source or scare away enemies or whatever other uses might be thought of. | 2008-10-28 20:11:00 Author: LordDax Posts: 79 |
good idea. Guessing your talking about having the level in darkness and you have to drag the light source around with you. I was thinking of doing something like this also | 2008-10-28 20:17:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
I did a level like this. It was gory and scary, but it all went wrong, and I didn't have time to finish it before the beta ended. | 2008-10-28 20:37:00 Author: DrunkMiffy Posts: 2758 |
the light could also attract some insects or something | 2008-10-28 21:19:00 Author: MatthijsNL Posts: 164 |

Glad you guys like it I really created this area as a place for creators to share ideas and methods with each other as I enjoy the open source world. So if you have any mechanics you've been toying with jot em down! I know I'll comment and discuss them for one! Plus you go on record as having thought of it first lol | 2008-10-28 21:28:00 Author: LordDax Posts: 79 |
This is quite a common one in games. Relatively common anyway. Weighted step puzzle Imagine you have a bunch of stairs. Each stair can have weights put onto a block next to it to change the steps height. However, when you put weights on one block it will make another step raise higher. The key is to find a balance by putting the correct weights onto the correct blocks so the stairs form nicely and you can hop on them to proceed through the level. | 2008-11-04 03:45:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
Has anyone seen an implementation of the Towers of Hanoi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Hanoi) in LBP? This puzzle seems to crop up in all manner of videogames from time immemorial and I'm curious to find out if it's possible to make it work in LBP. | 2008-11-04 15:56:00 Author: FlowersInHisHair Posts: 126 |

Wouldn't be easy to make sure they follow the rules but very possible. | 2008-11-12 23:07:00 Author: Tehwildcard Posts: 6 |
Sounds like a headache to try to pull off without letting people cheat, but kudos if you can figure out a way! | 2008-11-13 00:40:00 Author: Justin Hopewell Posts: 135 |
ok, here's one. I am a bit stuck trying to make a resettable reverse bungee. The idea is that the sack boy is at the bottom of a cliff and has just completed a task which will enable him to use this device to ascend to the top of the cliff by being catapulted by a bungee type contraption (a piece of elastic in the game). I just wanted an original and fun way to get to the top instead of the standard elevator or winch type setup. I need it to be resettable in case the player misses on their first attempt and needs to have another go. Anyway, I've been thinking about how to do this for a couple of days now, but have only had half an hour or so to work on it in the game due to RL stuff. So far i have a tree at the top of the cliff with a winch coming down from one of the branches, the winch is attached to a small blob of rubber which is in turn attached to the elastic (bungee) which has a grabable piece of sponge attached to the bottom end. I've set this up so that u can just jump and grab the sponge at its lowest point as the winch goes up and down, you then have to pull the sponge under a kind of hook, which stops u being pulled up into the air when the winch goes up. Then when the winch gets to the top and the elastic is stretched to the max, the restraint hook flips away and you are propelled into the air and have to let go at the right moment to land on the cliff top. All sounds good in theory, but i am having trouble getting it to work properly in the game - for some reason the winch does not retract all the way back up when you are hooked under the restraint, at least i think that is what is happening - as i cant see what is going on above the viewable area at this point. But when the restraint hook releases, you don't get launched into the air - you just go up a little bit and bounce around for a while. I have tried changing the strength of the elastic and the winch but none of this seems to work. Any one have any ideas about how I could achieve this effect but with a different method? Congrats if u managed to read all of the above...... Cheers! EDIT - I have given up on this reverse bungee idea now. I tried some more to get it working last night but it seems that the winch just doesn't have enough power to stretch the elastic enough to do what i want. I even tried with a piston but that has about the same strength as the winch. Elevator it is then........ | 2008-11-13 02:31:00 Author: chillum007 Posts: 228 |
I also had an idea for an all-dark level with a portable light source. And the insects and such also add a nice effect. And chillum007, I can't answer your question because of little experience with the game but I'm sure someone will. | 2008-11-13 22:30:00 Author: Night Angel Posts: 1214 |
Cool idea. I would make a dark and scary level. With a couple swaying lights to make it look scary. | 2008-11-17 20:00:00 Author: Zorez Posts: 83 |
To the reverse bungee: I'd make a elastic all the way down the cliff, attach it to a ball of sponge. Now glue the sponge to a peice of dissolving material, which is in turn glued to the ground. Put a grab switch on the sponge, and conenct it to the material. Tighten the elastic, so when they grab the sponge they get catapulted up into the air. | 2008-11-17 20:39:00 Author: lionhart180 Posts: 200 |
