Scary Advice Wanted

Archive: 10 posts

So I'm making a level that's suppose to be pretty scary but the only problem is I'm stuck and I don't really know what direction I want to take the story in. So I figured if I poke around on the forum I could find something out. Anyone have any advice as to how to make a great scary level or suggestions for levels I can play to kind of get the creative juices flowing? Thanks in advance. <32010-10-12 13:00:00

I have two scary levels you can take a look at if you want, they are called "52 Whitechapel Lane" or "The Spirit of Anne-Marie".

Try to use a less music as possible and have sounds, this will create an eerie effect.
The level is best to be dark and gloomy rather then bright and colourful.
Distant screams and weird noises are always good.
And add a story that will make people get chills down their spines

Um, well some people think my level Tenement is a bit scary.

Best advice I can offer...

Build tension and atmosphere.
Avoid cliche. If people have seen it a hundred times before in horror films/games, then you'll be trying to scare a desensitised audience. Use your imagination!
Justapose the ordinary with the bizzare, the beautiful with the grotesque, light with dark.
Try to disorient and play mind games with the player.
Think about what scares you. Not just what makes you jump, but also what makes your skin crawl.

Hope that helps.

I would suggest you play The Untenanted levels (there are 2) mostly the second one, These levels, by Veraegic, are really good when it comes to building a spooky atmosphere, there are few cheap scares but otherwise, they are good. My advice would be,
- Make your level dark and set fog colour to 2, it's black.
- Make sure some VERY SMALL parts of your level are pitch dark
- Make use of the monster pack, especially the sounds
- Talking about sounds, use little things like creaking doors/floorboards, eery thump, short but sudden blackouts, flickering lights, stuff falling over, doors automatically ..closing/ opening or even breaking.
- Risky strategy, build that dreaded feeling by talking about something awful(a super monster maybe?) so that the players are always on alert, but this is risky because if ..your so called "something awful" fails to impress, it will backfire and the player will feel pretty safe.
- Don't rely too much on global lighting, it's best to keep it dark and illuminate most stuff with other lights
- For the story, curses, demons, and abandoned places help
- Cut off from the rest of the world = No hope of backup.
Hope I helped

Just got off of work and got a chance to check these. All of the advice is awesome and I will definitely check out ALL of these levels. I'll report back on the board once I make any headway on my own levels. Thanks everyone!2010-10-12 23:51:00

Oh! And if you REALLY want a creepy sound effect, set the baby sound effect to low.

It made me exit the level: LittleBigSilentHill when I heard it.
