SA reviews "A Helping Hand...Err... Pop-it" (Well, sort of...)

Archive: 2 posts

I must admit I am legitimately disappointed.

Brnxblze decided to try a level approach seldom done by most creators, probably due to how much harder the level needs to work to get any attention. Here's the schtick:

"You can't actually play this level the way it is, you actually need to download it first and play it from your moon in create mode, and it will require 2 players. The idea here is to have one player play the level regularly, and have a second player playing in god mode (or editing mode for the not so religious). When the regular player runs into obstacles, the editor needs to use the pop-it tools to create a path or opening. Follow the rest of the in-game instructions as they proceed."

Now, I have no initial issue with this idea. Truth be told, I was actually very giddy about trying it out, and even went to the degree of finding a play mate to assist me in exploring this bit of unknown terrain. I copied the level eagerly and awaited a grand experience. Here's what I got:

"Sorry, you cannot edit this level without the following 4 DLC packs. I'm afraid you cannot enter create mode."

I have fury.

I mean, seriously? I can't edit the level because it has a few DLC stickers and blocks I don't have? I understand the need to destroy any sort of meta-piracy by creating a system that would prevent simple copy-pasting of foreign objects, but to completely kick me out of create mode and not let me back seems a tad too far.

So, that's the review. I couldn't play it. There isn't a way for me to play it without spending money on DLC packs with which I literally have no interest (Buzz! Trivia DLC pack, for one example), and honestly why should I when it would just be infinitely cheaper for me if the creator were to create a non-DLC version of the same level.
Also, I want to make it clear that I don't have any grudge against brnxblze for this little folly of his. I honestly believe he either didn't or doesn't know about this little error and it would be great if he was reading this and decided to remedy the situation. I can't hold him completely faultless obviously, he probably could've done more play-testing to find this, and if not he probably could've tried finding someone else that owns the game to test it. Plus he didn't have to necessarily make a level that required downloading and running in create mode, but I definitely don't hold any anger towards him for the error.

Final Score: N/A
I was really looking forward to this one, but DLC is literally restricting me here. Without any way to actually experience the true level, I can't give it an honest score.

On a side note, yes I mad.

Hi, ShiningAquas. Sorry for replying so late! I didn't even know you tried to review the level until today. Yes, I know about this issue that used to plague this level. I put some stickers that required DLC when I first created the level and I didn't find out about this problem until I published and created a thread here on LBPC. Obviously, when I found out, I went straight to create mode and took out all the DLC I could find. I got every piece of DLC using the info people gave me of which DLC exactly was in the level. But, for some reason, it still showed up like if there was DLC in the level so I was forced to leave it that way.

Until now! I recently remade this level using LBP2 tools. It obviously doesn't have as many features as if it would have had if it was in create mode but I'm happy with the result and happy that people will finally be able to play it. I know your thread says you're closed for reviews but, since the level would've had a review if it wasn't for this issue, I was wondering if I could get a pass and get a proper review from you. I would really appreciate it if you could as I have read some of your older reviews and they're great and very extensive so it would be a huge help for me.

If you decide to review the level, here's a link to the thread:
