Gonna go out on a limb here and try to limit my choices to just one song per game. With any luck, people might find something wonderful they never even heard before, so please forgive my ramblings to follow and try to see what I have to show

10. Prelude (FF1): The one that's been there from the very beginning and been there ever since.

9. Esper Battle (FFXII): 12 probably isn't very many people's favorite FF (it definately isn't mine), but it had some great music and the music for the esper bosses gave the impression you really were fighting creatures of mythic proportions.

8. Terra (FFIX): I think I like IX more then most, or at least I like it for what it was trying to be: a callback to the old-school FFs and an attempt to reconstruct the whimsical, storybook fantasy feeling after the increasingly futuristic direction the series took after VI. This is also why I like the theme of Terra (which isn't the name of a character this time around), as it really captures the feeling that you're in a fantastical, foreign place.

7. Otherworld (FFX): FFX's music was quite frankly all over the place in terms of genre, but that doesn't mean it didn't have a good soundtrack. Otherworld presented something completely different then any FF song before it: loud, energetic, and angry, but still memorable.

6. Still More Fighting (FFVII): As much as I hate what SE and it's neophyte fans have allowed 7's legacy to devolve into (and I can already guess which game might win the poll),the music remains great even in the (often ill-advised) spinoffs. But the boss fight music of the progenator actually remains my favorite "regular" boss fight music among the entire franchise.

5. Tsuki no Akari (FFIV): While I'm generally against of remakes as they can ruin the integrity of originals, FFIV was well worth it as it not only allowed a younger generation of fans to be introduced to when the franchise "grew the beard," not only that but SE just about improved everything from the original, including the soundtrack.

4. Battle on the Big Bridge (FFV): The FF franchise as a whole polarizes most of it's fanbase but I can't think of anyone who hated Gilgamesh from V (at most they don't know who he is from not playing the game). It says a lot that he's one of the few recurring characters (who actually possesses a fairly consistant personality from each appearance), and of course his great battle music only helps his popularity.

3. Antipyretic (FFT): Here's one that a lot of FF fans may have not heard, due to Tactics not being within the numerical sequence of games. The original PS1 version might actually be my favorite FF game of all though (shoddy translation and all). It has layered characters, a complex jigsaw puzzle of a plot, and epic fights all underscored by music perfectly suited for every occassion. But since the heart of Tactics is combat, here's what I find to be the best battle music (among its several).

2. Memoro De La Stono ~ Distant Worlds (FFXI): Here's a song even fewer FF fans have probably heard due to 11 being the sort of black sheep of the numerical due to it's online status. Not a whole lot of FF fans have really played 11, much less toughed out some of its (once very unforgivingly challenging) missions and would normally never get the chance to know about some of they very beautiful songs that wait at the end of the add-on storylines. So here's what I think is the crown jewel of the bunch, made even better by the Distant Worlds orchestra (who actually take their name from this song's name), and please listen

1. Draco and Maria (FFVI): My number one is also my surprise entry. Having an opera (and participating in it) was something completely unheard of in videogames up until 6, and just about any future attempt would in all likelihood only be seen as a pale imitator. Of course, the SNES couldn't possibly capture the full feeling of a real life opera given the technological limitations, but the scene is just so memorable that people have actually gone and actually made real opera performances of it, which just shows how great it is. Naturally, Distant Worlds (being the compelation of some of the most memorable FF songs) took a stab as well and did it justice. This song is also the longest on my list, but please listen to this one as well

i don't want to flood the page with videos so i'll just do a list.

FF4 - Golbez, Clad In Darkness

FF6 - Dark World
FF6 - Another World of Beasts
FF6 - Terra's Theme

the ending theme that splices the whole thing together is pretty moving. that probably encapsulates my memories all in one go, every time i see it. it's my favorite, by far, since I got it as III as a surprise x-mas present in '94. it will always be one of my favorite games.

FF7 - The Forested Temple
FF7 - You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet

FF8 - Succession of Witches

FF10 - To Zanarkand
FF10 - Hymn of the Faith

FF12 - To the Place of the Gods
