I am the Hobo Warrior. At the very least, I am a hobo. I'm speaking metaphorically in relation to this website. Way back in the times before time I was writing long stretches of critique for the LBP audience. Such endeavors find themselves trite in comparison to school and looking for work and all the regular responsibilities of being a young adult. I haven't abandoned this entirely though, so here I am in a multi-part leap trying to catch up and shutout this abominable waitlist I've developed here. Let's start with Hobo Warrior...but not actually. See, what T20thoughts forgot to mention (or maybe it's just been far too long) is that Hobo Warrior is actually a sequel to a level called Hobo Wizard, made in a far earlier time. If you know me, you know that I simply can't just start at 2, that would be ludicrous. No, no I needed to see the Hobo Wizard first clearly, and although I never agreed to review HW, I can at least give a brief summary. Basically, you are helping the light wizard retrieve his stolen magic wand from a dastardly hobo. The hobo doesn't particularly like parting with such an object and blasts you away into a hobo dimension (yeah) where all the platforms are made out of thick newspaper. With assistance from the light wizard, you must travel across the very hobo-centric world and eventually fight the hobo wizard to the death. When dying he mutters "You are being fooled" and proceeds to evaporate from your attacks as you return the light wizard's magic wand back to him. The light wizard turns out to be the villain and imprisons you, stating that with the hobo out of the way he can rule all the land. Overall, the level was fairly decent, nicely paced, well played and equally fun to jump through, and outside of one or two badly placed checkpoints and an unnecessarily frustrating boss fight I would say it's a great level to play through for some simple fun. That said, what's the deal with Hobo Warrior... Directly following the last level's events, the light wizard has destroyed the landscape and conquered all. All hope seems lost when suddenly you are rescued by some very hobo-esque powers, quite peculiar since the hobo wizard is dead. Quickly you are introduced to the Hobo Warrior, the son of the Hobo Wizard from the first level. While he despises you for killing his daddy, he knows that it will take more than his powers alone to defeat the evil wizard. He uses his hobo powers to guide you through a very factory-like contraption full of crazy security, and eventually you fight the light wizard in another unnecessarily frustrating boss fight and proceed to restore peace to all. Afterwords, you inherit the title of Hobo Sack, keeper of justice and I want all of you to know how happy I am that this is the internet and I didn't just have to personally explain such an absolutely ridiculous story to all of your lovely faces. I suppose you fellows want to know if the level was actually good. Well, it wasn't good. It was great. Fantastic. Superb. Marvelous, and the best part is that I didn't actually have to live the hobo experience in the fullest (smell and all). Hobo Warrior does a whole hell of a lot right, it's fairly difficult to talk about any particularly glaring issues here. At the most, I'd say it really falls under all the biggest problems the first one did; that is to say there were a couple of questionable checkpoints and a (less) frustrating boss fight. Everything else was great from the good atmosphere to the loose style of play, the cleverly conceived platforming segments and of course the incredibly hilarious decor choices. Altogether, well built and well conceived equals a great experience. Final Score: 9.5/10 Fantastic level, great use of the game tools and really an impressive use of a "less is more" sort of mentality. The artist managed to get a lot out there with relatively simple tool usage, and it really paid off. On a side note, what's the deal with homeless people that own pets?
