Swimming

Does anyone swim here? Has anyone done it competitively?
Well I'm asking because I'm having trouble on Breastroke.. That one is a toughie.
Anyone know any tips to make it easier? After I do the first stroke I stop.. it doesn't glide for me.

Bleh! any tips?

Lets see, a simple quick way to describe it...

Think of it as if you were atop a ladder and you're opening a double sided door above you for the arm movement, the legs think as if there was something really below you and you could only catch it with your feet, but just kept slipping.
The torso movement would be like a spring, coil up when the arms and legs are closes to it, and stretch all up when the arms and legs arr separating.


Srry, dunno if that makes sense, but that's the shortest explanation I could think of without over-explaining it and making it even more confusing.

Seeing as I'll have to be teaching people how to do stuff like this in a couple of years, I'll have a go at it.

For your hand movements, I guess you would start after pushing off the wall, in the streamline position, (side of arms pushing against ears, hands ontop of each other and fingers pointed.) from there you move your hands to the sides, and turn your palms so they face outwards. Then, once both hands are about a foot or so from your face, slowly turn your hands down, and pull your arms back to your body, but pull them towards your chest. (Make it like your hands are ice-cream scoops as you do this.) Once both your hands are together at your chest level, pull them up towards your head. When they pass your head, it should look like you are coughing into your hands, or praying. Then thrust your hands forward, back into the stream-line position.

As for your legs, you'd start in the streamline position like your hands, with your legs side by side and your toes pointed. From here, (keeping your legs side by side) pull them up so your heels are touching your butt. (When they are, your hands should be at the chest position as I said above.) Then, (keeping your knees together) make a V with your legs (If you go into this position on the ground, your legs will be in the air.) then, you go 'down and around'. This is where you thrust your feet downwards, but at the same time towards the streamline position from before. At this point you should glide for a small distance, if you don't glide for long, just repeat everything, so you get another push, or you should try doing a more powerful 'down and around' movement with your legs.

Oh and for your head, it should move with your arms and legs, with your face out of the water and looking ahead when your arms are at your chest and your heels are at your butt. Then it should go down with the thrust.

Sorry if that's confusing but it would be much easier to show than to write
