Custom image importing
Archive: 29 posts
I want a show of hands. Who wants to be able to upload images from the HDD or USB stick to use as custom stickers? I don't care if there has to be a set resolution or the images get auto resized, just so long as I can use custom made images that I have created in photoshop/gimp. I don't know about you but PS eye just doesn't do it for me. Even better make sure there is support for transparent backgrounds. This would make custom game creation so much easier. EDIT: Yes I KNOW it should say "OFF your hard drive" If it is possible to edit poll title could someone pls fix that. | 2010-10-07 11:39:00 Author: Strangepom Posts: 445 |
I'd love it, although it would be abused somewhat and MM would be quickly infringing on copyright , you could argue that the PS eye can take pictures and that people have made Mario levels etc. However with the current system they can say they don't support this and quite easily moderate any levels with copywritten material without question. So in answer to your question yes it would be wonderful but they'd have to add in to the EULA that "copywritten images are against rules and if found the player will be banned from the LBP2 servers" or something along those lines. Fingers crossed... | 2010-10-07 12:18:00 Author: RAWTalent Posts: 224 |
Some DLC would become obsolete with this | 2010-10-07 12:47:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |
yh and a lot of people might actually abuse it so yh. | 2010-10-07 14:00:00 Author: Lgjoka2002 Posts: 538 |
Too many problems with this. Would be better if they released a LBP Paint program like I described here: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=37281-I-d-love-to-see-LBP-Paint | 2010-10-07 14:10:00 Author: Biv Posts: 734 |
I chose option two because of the typo. I don't really see a reason why I would want to import a picture OF my hard drive. | 2010-10-07 14:39:00 Author: Jgr9 Posts: 56 |

It won't fix DLC problem, MM would need to choose this or DLC and they already got DLC on shelves that need to be sold What DLC problem? We'd have our hacky paint stickers in their limited shapes and they would have their neat, well made stickers in custom shapes. | 2010-10-07 16:44:00 Author: Biv Posts: 734 |

I've wanted this ever since the beginning. I've SEEN pics of it already in LBP1. But that was for the programmers I guess. I've used the eyetoy for some pics and it really really sucks. Terrible low grainy resolution, digitally mangled to the point where there isn't a point in making it at all. I can understand the complications in having this feature, but why fear it so much that is' entirely left out? That's why you made the grief button! So you can report sticker abuse! They should just recruit LBP mods or something. People that play LBP levels all day looking for stolen copyrighted content. That work on peanuts and complimentary mountain dew. | 2010-10-07 17:14:00 Author: Cheezy WEAPON Posts: 283 |
As Shadowriver said, MM wants to SELL sticker packs to you. All this online stuff has got to be paid for somehow... | 2010-10-07 17:20:00 Author: Tig-W Posts: 106 |
As Shadowriver said, MM wants to SELL sticker packs to you. All this online stuff has got to be paid for somehow... As if I cant PSeye them if I really wanted them without paying. And you can abuse the PSeye so much easier too. /endless nonprofitable multiple sided debate. :/ | 2010-10-07 17:30:00 Author: Fishrock123 Posts: 1578 |
They can still do that. Not all of us are artists and photoshop pros. Sticker packs would still be unique and wanted, just like anything else. There's no way to rip the sticker packs and redistribute them anyhow with this feature (and if they did, it would look shoddy. Less shoddy than psEye, but still shoddy). The only thing keeping this feature in cuffs is fear. Nobody is going to 'steal' MM's profits. Copyright issues probably, but no lost money. | 2010-10-07 17:46:00 Author: Cheezy WEAPON Posts: 283 |
There's a whole bunch of reasons as to why this would not be a good idea, but for me its that why to get pictures to lbp? for me it would take all the "create" thing out of the game, I mean, you can pretty much make anything you want in lbp as a sticker now, personally, I would never use that function if it existed. @Fishrock: Yes you could take pictures of the stickers, but don't compare the bad resolution of the PS eye to the real sticker | 2010-10-07 17:58:00 Author: Ragnarok Posts: 898 |
@Fishrock: Yes you could take pictures of the stickers, but don't compare the bad resolution of the PS eye to the real sticker Then search @LittleBigPlanetoid on LBP. Those were taken via eyetoy. | 2010-10-07 18:24:00 Author: Fishrock123 Posts: 1578 |
The only thing keeping this feature in cuffs is fear. Nobody is going to 'steal' MM's profits. Copyright issues probably, but no lost money. I'm not convinced about "no lost money" It would be a couple days, tops, until somebody put a zip file online with a gazillion images - The "ultimate sticker pack". Save it to your PS3 HD, and never buy a sticker pack from the PS store again! Huzzah! But not great news for Sony. Also, I doubt the existing sticker packs would stay 'unique' for long... someone would inevitably find a way to transfer them into a hard-drive friendly format and put them up for free download. I honestly believe this is the reason the feature hasn't been added to the game. | 2010-10-07 18:31:00 Author: Tig-W Posts: 106 |
So the only solution is MM monopolizing the market by having no market at all? Just because there's some people dipping their fingers into the pie doesn't mean all of us can't eat it at all.. It's like the music industry. Itunes still exists. People torrenting albums still exist. And what about all the pc games and steam mods? Do they have sleepless nights worrying about people importing Sonic models into Garry's Mod? They're not going to lose anything. There would always be people with money and LBP fans. | 2010-10-07 19:06:00 Author: Cheezy WEAPON Posts: 283 |
Hmm... dunno.. I'll bet that Sony is taking the whole DLC issue more seriously than you think. After all, LBP's online functions must cost a bomb to keep running, especially taking into account LBP.me (which is going to be huge). remember there's only three ways Sony can get ongoing revenue from the LBP games - the level packs, the costumes and the stickers. Adding a feature which neuters one of those revenue streams probably ain't something the suits would take kindly to. But seeing as we'll get a glimpse of MM's balance sheet, or hear what goes on behind closed doors, I guess we'll never know... | 2010-10-07 19:43:00 Author: Tig-W Posts: 106 |
hmmm Sounds like there is a lot of concern regarding this (possible) feature eating into Mm's profit margins as well as copyright abuse. Personally I don't think it will affect the whole DLC market, because as someone pointed out earlier not everyone is a Photoshop/Gimp genius. Having said that, what would take me 5 min in Photoshop I can make in LBP but it may take me 6-7 hours, or longer. Gradient tools are all good but there are some things that I just can't do in LBP (eg. 23% Burn overlay). Look at my sig for example, that took all of 30 - 45min to make. How long do you think it would take me in LBP? The official DLC will still contain unique costumes and things, and the DLC stickers will still be just as they are now. It makes no difference for people without the packs because if they really want certain images they take photos of them anyway. | 2010-10-08 07:41:00 Author: Strangepom Posts: 445 |
If Mm just up the take-photo-as-sticker-ingame quality, and introduce a Sticker corner editor, I'm happy. | 2010-10-08 07:57:00 Author: Matimoo Posts: 1027 |

I'm guessing that most the people that have replied to this thread don't do much pc/mac based image editing. I would like to hear the opinion of a signature artist and get their feedback | 2010-10-11 00:57:00 Author: Strangepom Posts: 445 |

Since we're able to export pics taken in LBP to our HDD's it's only right we should be able to import them back again. This would have been useful during the bad old days before the Leerdammer patch when the profile space was extremely tight. | 2010-10-11 16:12:00 Author: D-E-S_87 Posts: 148 |

But this would ruin concept of selling sticker DLCs, i say and say this again, MM would need to choose between this (or drawing tool) or continuing of sticker sells | 2010-10-11 16:29:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |
Yes I KNOW it should say "OFF your hard drive" If it is possible to edit poll title could someone pls fix that. Done. While I'm here, I may as well add my two <insert smallest unit of your local currency here>... I think it's reasonable to assume that most people would like to be able to do this, but I can't see it happening, because, if they allowed you to import arbitrary images, they'd have a hard time selling their sticker-based DLC packs. | 2010-10-11 23:17:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
Trying to sell us their stickers was a bad idea from the start, and sticker packs was the most lame idea ever, I'll never buy them, Plus people use their own made stickers far more then MM's, i know i Do, Also your right Dood, being able to make are backgrounds transparent be nice if nothing else~ *mew | 2010-10-11 23:31:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |

While I agree they won't do it but I doubt it would be for that reason. Costumes are selling. Stickers, not that much. We only had 2 packs of them and if they'd continue to pull out suck packs, they are so particular that people that would want them wouldn't start on an internet crusade to find them, they would simply buy them. The reason why MM and Sony are affraid is the possible copyright issues that can come out of it all. It would also probably prevent them to have their "E for everyone" rating (an equivalent in other continents) + this would probably create the need of a new moderating system anyways -- one they might not want to embark into. They risked having the PSeye compatibility because honestly there's 3 people owning it + the quality is bad. This makes the need for moderation or the possible copyright problems staying really low. | 2010-10-11 23:39:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |

It would also probably prevent them to have their "E for everyone" rating (an equivalent in other continents) + this would probably create the need of a new moderating system anyways -- one they might not want to embark into. I've never really subscribed to either of those arguments (i.e. copyright violation/inappropriate content), as those are easy enough to violate currently using the PS Eye. Your argument that the low image quality of the PS Eye somehow makes these reasons inapplicable also seems a tad spurious. There is evidence to suggest that, historically, there was an "import image" tool in LBP1, but was cut from the final game (speculatively at Sony's request). Based on this, the only other argument that has some merit IMO is that the feature was omitted in order to help boost sales of the PS Eye. As a business, I suspect Sony are far more interested in their "bottom line" than anything else. There's more than enough "wiggle room" in the DMCA to get away with copyvios, as long as Sony appear to put in the effort to take them down when requested. | 2010-10-12 00:10:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |

Based on this, the only other argument that has some merit IMO is that the feature was omitted in order to help boost sales of the PS Eye. My main reason why is that there's not many people having a PSeye. And this is why it's interesting for Sony to sell them (another argument I had but forgot about telling -- tks!) + not risky about my other arguments. As for the copyright and moderation argument, don't forget it's in conjuncture of wanting the game to be for everyone. An mature (17+) game could probably have an image import no sweat. And for the moderation, if there was alot of image importing, this would create a need to moderate it. This means more staff, people, $$ and most probably another moderation structure. Right now LBP is self moderating and that's how they want to keep it. Anyhow, and now thanks to move, we have even less chances to see this feature reappear since Move will give people the benefit of Move itself + the image importing. | 2010-10-12 17:41:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
