Tekno Fortress

Archive: 30 posts

Hello everyone! Alright, so I was able to Republish Tekno Fortress under my original PSN, aer0blue. I will no longer use aer0blueEU and will probably lock the level on that account. Either search for me, give me an add on PSN, tell me through here, anything. Posting this for a number of reasons:

Whoever did not get the chance to play on the Beta can try it out.
Being the finalized version, whoever tried the previous versions can now check out the new stuff, so give it a shot guys, and let me know what you think!
As before, I will no longer use aer0blueEU.
A little extra: new, better music... xD

Also, the transition from Beta to the Retail game brought the level a number of bugs, such as the LBPC sticker being backwards and some objects that were spawning were breaking. Odd... Down below is the information taken from the original thread.

The final version of Tekno Fortress has been published. It's not v2.0, not v1.95... Just plain ol' Tekno Fortress. It includes more prizes, visual enhancements, difficulty adjustments, among other things. It's still far from perfect, but after all of your help (all you people that played, I mean!), I finally got to improve on it... a LOT! I won't be working anymore on it probably. I may remake it later on when the game comes out, or I may do a sort of "Return to Tekno Fortress" kind of thing. I'm just glad this level will make it to the retail version. Hoping people like it then, too. xD!

For any that don't know, Tekno Fortress is a behemoth of a level that was inspired by many original 2D platforming games, so see if you can spot which one influenced on what! It also includes puzzles, branching paths, story, a secret boss, a LOT of prizes, and much, much more! Regarding the story, it's a sort of prequel to the upcoming chapters I'll be working on after the game's release. The level took me about 40 hours to make and an additional 8-9 hours of tweaking. It filled up the whole thermometer of a Medium-sized crater. The video of the level is down below.

**WARNING** Spoilers ahead!! Watch at your own risk.

The video was recorded using v1.7 of the level. It was missing some graphical enhancements, as well as a checkpoint or two. The finalized version has better camera angles, too, among other stuff. Minor things, but still there.
The visuals can clearly be improved, but right now, on the finalized version, I'm nearly reaching the limit of my thermometer, not to mention it'd be too complicated right now to make it look better. Lesson learned: Do things separately... Do not make objects "complicated", as the game calls them.
It only shows about 60% of the level, obviously omitting two of the paths, the secret boss, hidden prizes and the Creator Comments section right at the beginning.
Being v1.7, it does not include a new room that replaces the one near the end where a fore-layer blocks the player's view.
Lastly, I'd like to apologize for the in-game text. It's not readable at all on the video, so you won't get to know anything about the storyline.

Well, I would like to thank all of you guys that played my level. You let me know that my level is decent and that I can keep on making stuff when the game is released. Thanks for being such a great community, LBPC!!

...Heh, funny.
This is only the beginning for all of us!
"Thank you for playing!"

This was going to be the next level I was going to check out. Right after I get this mic working, that is. Saw the video a few weeks ago before I joined LBPC and been excited about it since.2008-10-27 23:25:00

Haha, I played this in the beta as well. Awesome work, especially since I'm a big fan of platforming.

One question...

It filled up the whole thermometer of a Medium-sized crater.

Are you saying that the different crater sizes really have different thermo levels? I really do need confirmation of this if possible.

Alright everyone, I republished the level successfully under my original PSN!! Check the first post for details. :]

Anyway, on to donkey's question...

To be quite honest, I don't know anymore. Maybe crater size has to do with the scale of the level, both horizontally and vertically, because I copied my level into a small crater and I didn't get any errors whatsoever. Friggin' weird... This should be cleared up.

LOL. How come? Was it too hard? Please, let me know. The more feedback the better. I want to improve with time.2008-10-29 06:03:00

It was awesome. Really challenging, too. You didn't reuse obstacles over and over again to the point of becoming boring, either. It's overall an amazing level, and its length is one of the factors that makes it so.2008-10-29 06:08:00

Got a chance to play this last night, and I thought it was really well made. Provided a great challenge and was overall a very enjoyable level. Looking forward to some more from you 2008-10-30 15:51:00

Thanks guys!! I know I've said it plenty of times before already, but I'm always interested in what you have to say. It really, really helps.

I played through the entire level, but I'm definitely going to try the other routes.

It's a fairly difficult level at some parts, but it's a good kind of difficulty. Not one where it's hard because the level is poorly done, but one that's challenging and rewarding. I like searching for hidden goodies and entering secret areas. Linearity is a pet peeve of mine.

I know what you mean about not getting enough people to view your work. Anyone who poured their heart into something they're proud of knows what you mean. I'd love to have the entire world view my upcoming series of levels, and currently my pet project is my blog which I'm proud of and like people to view just like a creator and his/her levels.

BTW, I really liked the spinning boss with the electrical arms played with a jetpack. May I use that idea for one of my own bosses? Would be a great machine for a Dr. Robotnik-type character.

Keep up the good work!

I have to apologize man. I just realized I did not post any comments on what is one of my favorite levels (I remember PMing you during the BETA with my thoughts but I forgot to post here). For those who have not played this go do so now It is a MONSTER of a level with so many different elements that I can't imagine how long it took Aer0 to dream them up. It is quite possibly both the longest and most challenging level I have ever played but also one of the most fun (I wonder if I still have the 2nd highest score ) It is definitely worth your time to check this level out and leave a few thoughts for aer0 on this thread, he deserves it2008-11-26 10:37:00

Thank you very much, SuperPhillip! I tried to keep the difficulty balanced... Although, to be honest, now I take a look at it and it may just be a little too hard for the more casual people... But I'm not changing that. Meant to be that way, anyway! Next one will be a little easier. (key word: little).

Use whatever you like, no credit necessary. Pretty easy to make; you can collect it in the level somewhere too. Any help, just ask... But it's simple.

Thanks, OCK! It'll probably be a while until I make a level, that, in my opinion, surpasses this one (gameplay-wise). I was racing against the clock, trying to get it done before the Beta ended...and I was pretty happy with the result. Oh, and I think you lost the 2nd highest score... Some person from Japan (I think?) found the secret boss and scored all the secret bubbles. lol

Do you think the branching paths idea is that good? I only have one branching path on my new level... Path A requires just one player, but Path B needs two or more. A twist on what I did with TF. I could add, though, an extra branching path like in TF...

Not every level of yours needs it, and even so it can be more subtle instead of 1 and 2, of course, which you probably already know.

I know they don't need it, but it makes it less boring if someone does decide to play the level over again. Gives them something new to try out. ^^;

I think I confused you for someone who pumps out levels all the time.
Since you don't have, like, 10 levels-- you don't need to worry so much about varying things up path-wise. What I mean is that if all your levels had multiple paths and followed that formula, it'd get boring. Throwing a one-path only level would spice things up.

I look forward to another level from you!

It took me a second read, but I understand now what you mean. It's a good point.

Thank you. Hopefully, the next one will be done by this week or the next (most likely the next). Way different from TF. xD

I knew it was hard to understand, too.
I'm usually good at conveying my thoughts in writing... :

I'm falling apart here! ;_;

To stay on topic, I love playing these types of dedicated levels. Not only are they just fun, polished, and you can tell the creator put their heart into it, but it gives me inspiration for my levels. Inspiration, mind you, not just remaking a person's level and slapping my name on it like some d-bags out there.

Would you like to add each other on PSN, or do you not wish to? It's okay either way.

EDIT: Edited my previous post. Is that more coherent?

Anyway, sure! Go ahead and add me on PSN. Send me an add as I'm currently "studying" (procrastinatiooooooooooooooon!!).

Personally it was a nice change from other one dimensional levels. Giving gamers a choice (ie: path A or B? :O) peaks curiousity and adds a unique element to levels. I think your one of 2 people that Ive seen do it really well so keep it up imo!

Thanks, I appreciate it. I like to give the people the ability to choose on my levels, even though I can't promise I'll always give them that freedom.

I'm actually dreaming up a level along the lines of Fable; giving the choice of good and evil throughout the level. To be honest I've never played Fable in my life, so it'll be my own creation with the same element of good/evil.

So yeah, you've inspired me to get this under way asap. Now if only there was some way I could skip my final exams? :O

There is, sadly, no way. Unless you just don't take 'em and get a 0. ;D!

Anyhoo, I've thought about that too, making the choices a little more personal. "Will you help the person or will you chase after XYZ?" Makes it more interesting!
