[Xbox 360] Hydrophobia

Archive: 1 post

For anybody here blessed with the fortune to have both a PS3 as well as an Xbox 360, I suggest you go download the demo for Hydrophobia from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

It is a very charming survival horror/adventure game.
Naturally, the title combined with the knowledge that the main character (Katie Wilson) has hydrophobia (not the stage of rabies, but rather aquaphobia (bit of a misnomer there)) means that you'll be spending a LOT of time in or around water.

Here's a little blurb from Wikipedia to share the main plot:

The game is set in the mid 21st century when the world has fallen into the chaos of the "Great Population Flood", and takes place aboard the Queen of the World, a city-sized luxury ocean vessel, built by a group of corporate giants known as the Five Founding Fathers; the group who, due to the Queen, have prospered while the rest of the world suffered.] At the beginning of the game, the craft is bombed by a group of fanatical terrorists known as the Malthusians?named after political economist Thomas Malthus who predicted that population growth would one day outpace agricultural production, returning society to a subsistent level of existence. The Malthusians have a plan to murder the vast majority of humans on the planet, so that the survivors wouldn't suffer from the effects of the population explosion. Their slogans, including "Save the World - Kill Yourself", are written on the walls and displayed on computer screens all over the ship.

Kate Wilson, the protagonist, is a systems engineer, who becomes a reluctant hero when the Malthusians attack and take over the Queen.

And this is where the game becomes interesting.

The water behaves naturally.

It's very interesting to see how the water reacts to, say, a door opening or an explosion.
Or even more impressive, a door opening to a room or corridor that's been completely flooded. Trust me when I tell you that it's very unsettling to open a door, and find a big surge of water rushing at you.

Check it out, really!

And to tie this in with LittleBigPlanet:
I'd be very happy if MediaMolecule could adapt the engine behind the water for LittleBigPlanet 2 (3?), assuming it wouldn't take up too much resources. It would certainly allow for greater use of the water.

That isn't to say LBP water isn't good already, because I certainly love it, and I understand the (resource) limitations, but think about it. An engine that allows for realistic flow of water.
