Filling-Up, the other 2 weeks...

Archive: 16 posts

So unless I'm off my rocker-- ( a distinct possibility) it has become apparent to me the Creator Spotlight Team pours so much of themselves into each project... they can not meet deadlines. Now it would seem without Morgana... the Community Spotlight is also late?

Without controversey and LBPCTG to distract us, I think these omissions would be even more glaring and jarring! Now, some may think I am here to take a swipe at these teams... maybe even with a smirk on my face!

Not So.

I think we are keeping these poor people on far too tight of a schedule. There should be no reason for these Givers to put forth such Herculean efforts... Perhaps it is time 'We' look to fill the other two weeks of every month. This would effectively fill each and every week of every month with a new feature. It would ease the burden on our most giving members, while raising the bar of the level showcase at the same time... and give us two new features to look forward to every month-- Ensuring for all eternity LBPC is the only place to stop for your LBP needs.

Of course we'd first need two new features that were worthy... (no easy task).

If I may, I was thinking we create an official level template which would consist of a simple LBPC code lock... an a whole lot of empty thermometer! Then we start a "Level thread Lottery". Any LBPC creator who posts in it is automatically entered into a random monthly drawing... The winner would be responsible for creating a LBPC Exclusive level in the four weeks time!

So what do you think? Or if you rather, Perhaps you could post a new feature of your own devising here for staff perusal.

Do you think its really necessary to speak in such and abstract fashion? The sort of vocabulary you use makes me think you have an open thesaurus in front of you as you type prose.

Besides that, I do agree with you. Two weeks as a deadline to go through 70 or more levels in the level showcase is too much - three weeks or more should be the deadline. Or at least, more people should be introduced (and are being introduced) to the Commspot team.

On another level, I agree C-O-M-P-L-E-T-E-L-Y with you on creating a LittleBigPlanetCentral exclusive level -- However, why only one creator? Could not two creators or more collaborate on a monthly project that is exclusive to LBPC?

I think you have some great ideas here,
Keep making ideas for the site!

Sadly, extending the deadline isn't really gonna help. Adding another week to the rotation just means another week's worth of levels to play through.

It all comes down to whether the team is able to play through the levels as quickly as they're posted into the showcase. As far as I'm aware, the team is still looking for new members (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=34069-Community-Spotlight-Now-Hiring!).

I agree with you Gravel, I think the fortnightly deadline is too demanding. I also know that what Aya's saying is correct... a month to do the Spotlight means a month worth of levels to play and more get missed out... not sure what on earth could be done about that one, but the Creator Spotlight, for sure!

As for your level idea.. I could see it appealing to some folks very much. I wouldn't participate myself as I don't have the time and a month would be far too much pressure for me, but hey, if you get the responses here, why not? We could also bring back some lesser features like the Character Contest, etc. As long as there's something going on, people will find something to do here.

But I'm all for taking some of the pressure off our more generous folks they do a great job.

and as for this:

Do you think its really necessary to speak in such and abstract fashion? The sort of vocabulary you use makes me think you have an open thesaurus in front of you as you type prose.

... I don't find it a problem. I can understand Gravel perfectly.

Nice idea Gravel! I'd love to see something like the 'Level thread Alottery' that you mentioned.

I see what you're saying, but I'd rather hear something as vibrant as that over the spammy, zero-punctuation way of posting that some users tend to go for.

What a brilliant idea! I'd be all for the level lottery idea. It would be great to play a new, LBPC exclusive level to play every few weeks. The only problem I forsee, is people not making deadlines... I feel like that would happen at least once, and can't really think of another way to ensure the level gets done. Either way, I would like to see this LBPC Community Level thing happen extremely bad! I hope we can find a way to get it going 2010-10-05 21:11:00

I'd like the level lottery thing too, but it might be hard to find someone with enough time to spare each time.

I can't spare any time, as the case may be with many members.

I'm not saying it'll fail, I think there will be enough people to do it, but what if something happens in the creators family and they can't do it? What then?

Thanks guys for posting some interesting observations! Of course... there's always a risk.
So here's some thoughts which will hopefully inspire others to bear fruit...

There's no reason why teams of two, three, or even private or public groups couldn't enter the monthly lottery drawing. Creating something for the community would of course be a sacrafice to some degree... It would mean putting the community before your self and your own personal plan. The pay-off for many of our lesser known members... this opportunity would be by and far their best chance at getting plays! (That should be motivation enough to be on deadline.) For the famous it might be a great chance to step out from their comfort zones... and either way it would be a service to the community.

Unfortunately, sometimes circumstances are such that a creator may not be able to finish on time... outside of the shear embarrassment of letting the community down... perhaps I would have to create a level to keep in que in case of emergency... or we could stockpile 1 or 2 levels every now and again if the creators were understanding enough. Really I don't think that would be the problem as much as... the 'EXCLUSIVE LBPC LEVEL', may just be bad. This is bound to happen in the course of things.... of course, I'd think this would be the 'price of admission' so to speak, as you would inevitably also get those weird one-off pairings you sometimes see in the betas... How about a Ninja/Lockstitch level?, cubbage/compher/morgana?, LBPSeries? or WizendSackmates co-op level? The possibilities are endless! Incidentally, once people decide to create and share... I think we'd develope a surplus pretty quickly-- If nothing else it may inspire a little goodwill and community spirit!

In regards to the community spotlight-- idk, preparing one spotlight in the stead of two still seems easier to me... (same amount of levels just less preparation) At any rate, 4 monthly features just makes sense to me. And invariably the criteria for a spotlighted level would be somewhat raised out of unplanned necessity. Still, I am not part of that Team and they know what is best for them. I'm just making a suggestion.

Oh oh, what about a "Community Face off!'
Its pretty much your idea gravel, but this would solve the 'what if one doen't finish the level' problem.

- Face-offs wold be between 2, 4, 6, or 8 people in teams of 2, 3, or 4, or solo each, uers may request handicaps (only against them.) if they're feeling 'creative.
- During the face-off building period is when sign-ups will be abailable,so while the teams are building people sign up, and by the end of the month, the teams are selected at random by the judges, we wouldn't want to always have the team ups stay the same would we?
It'd get repetitive after a while, so teams will be selected from random people who signed up, so there's always a new conbination, and people may meet new friends along the way!
- Each month will be random team numbers as well of course, so may be 1 v 1, 4 v 4 etc.
(Unless user(s) requested handicap).

- 3 Judges woud be selected by the host or co-hosts (Not decided yet.) monthly, so to try to avoid personal friends of the conestants signing up jut so give their vote to them.

- Hosts/ co-hosts would also select themes, and other 'special events' as well as some other suff.

Well that's all I got right now, I wouldn't mind Hosting this myself, maybe Gravel would care to be a host too, as it was based off his idea?
(May recruit a 3rd host to have a total of 6 judging.)

So waddaya think?
Do the people approve of the LBPCentral "Community Face off!" yes?

I would like to suggest that a creator must be recommended before he/she can be entered in the lottery. We could do a little "Reccomendations" thread to, obviously, get reccomedations. The most reccommended creators would then be sent out PM's to see if they would be willing to make the level. Nearly fixes the bad level problem, I would think. :/

We could do an "Official Reccommendation Thread: Vol 1, 2, 3, etc...". Top 5 reccomended (and willing) creators would make levels in two weeks time, send the finished level to the "Head of Operations." In doing so, we would have a stockpile of about 5 or so levels, and reccomendation threads can be instituted whenever needed.

I agree on most of the ideas posted here.
I do think having a mini-levels contest would be interesting. The issue with having teams making levels is the management of the 4-8 people working on it. Especially with different time zones and with teams with more than 4 players.
Having teams facing off with a civilised and polite way of course. I'd love to have a more official character contest again. It allows less popular creators (like me ) to have a chance to get a little bit of fame or recognition for our talent.
As an idea for a feature. How about a contest or feature where people could create a given challenge to make a sticker/character/contraption in 2 weeks.
Two weeks may seem a little short but I think we could get a timeline to work.

But a recomendation thread would end up with the most popular creators would it not? Of course, thats just me who would like to make one.......

Of course, it would be to start, but after a thread or two, it will surely get to others. Although, (not saying this would be you), the level quality may decrease after a while...

My ideas never work!

Heck I wouldn't mind if we got a creator spotlight less often. They are super awesome and worth the wait.

As for a community filler, (I think this was done before with teleportation rooms or something to that effect, don't think I ever saw/read/heard about the final level, anyway..) how about everyone (who wants to) makes a one notch thermo room (based on template), and then someone with all DLC (or perhaps we could limit ourselves to no DLC for a challenge) could stitch em all together.
We could set themes (ice/snow or jungle/etc) or challenge limits (can only use certain objects/decorations/colours/materials) to make it more interesting.
Then we could vote for our favourite section in the level thread.

The deadlines would be way easier to meet compared to a full level, as it is only a tiny section.
Many hands make light work and all that.

Gravel my friend... thanks so much for noticing. Speaking of the Creator Spotlights, it is a horribly arduous task and not sure how we make the deadlines we do. ..we didn't the other week and thankfully no one screamed at us. Fact is, we had several members busy with personal things and out of town (me included) and we just didn't quite make it even though we gave it a Herculean effort to finish. We came up just a tad short and we refused to compromise.

Yup.. it is true that at least on the Creator Spotlight side of things, we run into issues trying to do everything we want to pack into a spotlight. The interview questions, the intro, the final thoughts as well as the creator giving their time to thoughtfully answer all the questions takes quite a bit of time. Then we do this video that seems to grow in scope and complexity with set design, special effects, and camera shots every time we do one. lol.. That part probably being more my fault more than most!!

However.. we did come up with something to help us out on the creator spotlight. ...oh and it was a great one if I do say so myself! This weekend will start something new that will give the team a bit of a break. ...and nope, I am not going to spoil the surprise. At least I hope it is this weekend!

However, we still do struggle and love all the ideas popping out concerning how to plop in something else. By all means keep those ideas coming!

As far as the Community Spotlight.. wow.. I dunno. Waiting a bit here or there just makes the amount of levels grow as Aya said. So I am wondering if maybe there was a precursor team that plays everything and suggests those levels that are good so the Spotlight Team has less to deal with? True, you would need more people, but possibly staging it a bit like that would give the team more time to better define their "bar" as well as give more thoughtful time to make their choices.

I used to join Morgana at times on her spotlight rounds and was amazed at how we would play through tons and tons of levels thinking, "Where the heck did these all come from!?!?!". lol The amount was simply staggering and regardless of the quality of the level, she would play it to the end even though in my mind some of them were no way going to make a spotlight. I totally admired her for her tenacity for doing that and really did see why she did it. I am just wondering if there was a "pre selection" of sorts, that it might lessen the Spotlight Team's playing scope. Possibly they are already doing something like that.. so I dunno, but it was just a thought.
