Medieval Contraptions
Archive: 5 posts
Hello again! ![]() I'm currently working on a medieval level, involving platforming and puzzles. I can't say how much of the level is done as I have no idea how far it will go, but hopefully not too long to bore the player or too short to not leave an impression. The areas so far consist of; 1. A main hall, which is rather small but still. 2. Two towers connected above the main hall, one a platformer, the other a puzzle. 3. A basement connected to the main hall once you've solved a puzzle in the last tower. 4. An underwater cave under the basement you will unlock once a rather easy and boring platformer has been completed which also has a puzzle in it. Looking at this list, I haven't gotten very far as none of these areas are very big to begin with. Nevertheless, I'm looking for ideas for puzzles, contraptions and other gadgets that would fit with this medieval theme, be it magic or not. I also have a boss battle planned at the end featuring a dragon (what else? ![]() If you read through all that wall of text, congratulations! ![]() *EDIT* I forgot to mention that most of the level will be indoors with a little outdoors platforming as well on the castle. | 2010-10-02 18:23:00 Author: Archideas ![]() Posts: 88 |
For the dragon maybe it could fly over you really fast and you have to dodge a shockwave or grab onto something due to the wind or something. | 2010-10-02 19:01:00 Author: Ayneh ![]() Posts: 2454 |
I should probably have specified that I meant for the dragon to be indoors. Crazy, isn't it? ![]() Mostly his head will be visible and he'll be fought in a dungeon kind of place. His positioning in this place would be like a laying C, his body underground. I have thought up an idea where his tail will join the battle from below now and then, hiding gas behind it or something equally lethal that you have to dodge. His forepaws/claws I figured would be best made unmoving, as a part of the scenery? Anyway, ideas are still welcome! ![]() | 2010-10-03 11:09:00 Author: Archideas ![]() Posts: 88 |
When I think mideival, I think these: Swinging axes (from the ceiling) Wooden chandeliers Crushing/Spiked Ceilings Oversized wooden wheels Puzzles involving fire or water Horses (maybe a platforming area similar to riding the buffalo in the story mode) A Monty Python reference ![]() As for the dragon, I'd say you need to make some sort of sequencing, where the dragon performs several actions (breaths fire, attacks with claws, shakes ground to make rubble fall, etc.), and the sackperson has to dodge the obstacle to get 1 hit on the dragon. Then the difficulty gets more intense until (how typical) you get 3 or so hits on him. Either that, or make it something rediculously simple, yet hard to pull off, like finding and throwing a breath mint into his mouth. Hope this helps! | 2010-10-06 15:49:00 Author: EliminatorZigma ![]() Posts: 173 |
