How Far We Have Come...

Archive: 32 posts

So yesterday, close to where I live, a young girl (15) was struck in the head by an unknown assailant. She was rushed to hospital, but unfortunately died. This news is terrible enough. Her parents could barely stand and everyone who knew her were in tears.

Quickly after her passing, several groups were posted on facebook as a memorial to this girl, and hundreds of messages were posted saying their condolences.

Here's were it gets sickening.

Several people who truly do not deserve to have access to the internet, let alone anything, started posting pictures and statements on these memorials. One of the pictures I saw was of Jim Carrey smiling, with the text: LOL YOU'RE DEAD written above it.

Because of this police came across several sites dedicated for people who do this sort of stuff. They even have links to facebook memorials for easy access.

What a world that we live in where 10 year old children can hop on their computer, copy a rude picture, and simply post it in a place remembering a person who recently passed away.

The worst part of it all is that no one can stop it. There are thousands of people like this, and so too many to stop. Where are we headed if these sorts of digusting acts are becoming more and more common.

That's just what comes along with the freedom of the internet I guess.

Being able to say or do anything you want without consequences reveals peoples' character. And sadly...most peoples' characters are cruel and sadistic.

IMO, the real problem is how people are brought up in society. The family life is still way behind it's years in progress and too many negative influences today.

It's funny because I don't know them...

Death comes for us all, even the ones who post insensitive pictures.

Unless it's a celebrity and you've been told a funny joke by someone. Then I'm sure you'll have no regards for the feelings of family and friends of the deceased, and will instead focus on raising a laugh from the people you know by repeating the joke.

Comedians actually scan the obituaries looking for material... the only difference here, is that the person in question is not a celebrity. *shrug*

If you don't want random members of the general public making insensitive comments, then don't create a public forum where they are able to...
For a majority of the world - their reaction would be "It's a tragedy, but I don't know them so why should I care, I may as well amuse myself?"

And there is a certain brand of comedy that feeds off of being taboo.
Just because you personally don't find it funny, doesn't mean they should be silenced.
Don't hate me because I speak the horrible truth.

It's not something I would do either, I am just playing the devil's advocate.

"lol you're dead" is comedy?

I suppose if someone held that picture on a sign at a funeral it would be alright?

I can't see any place where LOL fits in the sentence "you are dead". Maybe except if the Grim Reaper would die. Oh, the irony.2010-09-28 15:23:00

So people can't make memorials on facebook because there are people who like to get laughs out of death? Ah.

@BlueBulletBill Yeah, lets all laugh as sick people disgrace those who have passed. Makes sense.

I know stuff like this happens all the time, and that's my point. The fact that this can even happen is disturbing, and how common it is becoming is scary.

Sick, sick people.

It's disgraceful. Thinking about it makes me angry, what do they get out of this? If it's humour, I feel slightly sorry for them. They obviously are not right in the head... :I

Ya, to me it's disrespectful. I have heard of people laughing at funerals, but those laughs came maybe from happy memories (or so they claimed) with the dead person, for an ecample, but that is another case as they are having flashbacks of the good times.

I know also that in a country people directly laugh about when somebody is dead and it is normal. Incredibly enough. Being happy actually lengthen your life (of course) and they just laugh about depressing matters. But the "LOL you're dead is too far"

People who post these pictures have not experienced how you feel when someone dies. They probably imagine 'grief' as being what you feel when you spill milk on your ipod.2010-09-28 20:07:00

Oh lawd, I have not laughed so hard in quite a while. We'd be more likely to give the killer somewhere to hide.

Though I agree that this world is messed up and life is life and this happens everyday, your snob attitude does this thread no good, if you want to be snobby then keep it to yourself, you don't have to post it to look like a jerk.

Um.. what?
/b/ is home to the type of people that would be the assailant who killed the girl, just to post the picture.

@Cog
Its a tragedy but them posting those pictures is not against the law and if it was against the law then that would be oppression, so theres nothing you can do. :/

A similar thing happened in Australia not so long ago in two cases. I'm not going into detail, if you want to know more you can do it yourself, but the images posted were definitely not suitable for an E rated site. The posting of these pictures was in fact illegal and I'm pretty sure the posters were caught and charged, but i can't remember the details. However all the disrespectful and downright disgusting comments, I don't know what happened with them.

And Macnme
I'm not sure where you got this idea of 'the majority of the world' decides to amuse themselves with the deaths of others they don't know. If you can provide evidence for this I'd gladly like to see it otherwise I think you'll find that 'the majority of the world' think more along the lines of "It's a tragedy, I don't know them but my thoughts go out to them".

I feel like killing the people who beat up others who are defenseless, when someone actually KILLS someone else and than others mock the victim...I would do far worse.

My heart goes out to the victims family.

It is a shame that people like that exists. We (at least some of us) live in countries where we can say anything we want, no matter how vile or offensive. But what would it be like if we couldn't?2010-09-29 01:58:00

I wasn't trying to be a snob, I just found the idea of /b/ helping somebody to be hilarious. Sorry if I came off as harsh.

Unfortunately, this happens all the time in the world that we live in today. However, you have to remember that not everybody is like this. There is no excuse for their actions as they ARE horrible actions indeed, but you can't do anything about it. Just remember that if they find such a horrible thing funny, that they must not have very entertaining lives that they have to resort to such bad measures to get a laugh. It saddens me that I don't find these types of things surprising anymore :2010-09-29 04:12:00

... there's dead baby jokes, cancer victim jokes, aids jokes, starving african jokes.... any time there is a tradgedy on a large scale (hurricain/earth quake/tsunami) there will be a thousand jokes based on it.
If you have ever even smirked at one of these jokes, then you are being 'disrespectful' to the victims, and mourners of the victims.
But the truth is, we don't always take these persons feelings into account when it comes to humour because it doesn't affect us directly, and when it does, we are usually in the minority.

Just because someone finds it distasteful, doesn't mean they have the right to silence others. And in alot of these cases, it is the fact that people do find it distasteful that gives rise to the humour. If people weren;t outraged, like the OP, then it would be alot less funny to them.

Humour is a release, a way of coping.
These guys posting "Lol, Your Dead" may be very frightened of their own mortality, and find laughing at death a reasonable coping method. Every record of our existence will eventually be erased by the passage of time, and people have different ways of coping with that inevitable fact (religion, despair, humour).
I suspect they also get a kick out of the reactions to their taboo humour, which itself is a form of humour... the "Embarassment" style humour of revelling in the outraged reactions of those who "don't get the joke" - which makes it even funnier for them.

Welcome to the internet - home of free speech..

I wouldn't have it any other way.

^Your overthinking it. Theres nothing complicated about it, they just find it funny.

@Everyone

Stop acting like these are the worst people in the world just because they made a joke about someone who died.
Yea, ok, random dude kills girl. /sad
Its a tragedy to anyone who prizes homo sapien life, to everyone else it's /shrug/

"What a world we live in"/"How far we have come"?
Yea, what a world we live in where people get angry at other people for not being angry.

The worlds a ****ed up place.
If this story ****** you off i'd hate to see how you'd react if you saw how the world really is.
