Check out the description of the "Frying Saucers" level in Tinsel Town. It clearly states, "@$$" in the description. I censored the word because I don't like being banned. Vulgar language, In a E10 game? Why!? It says kick the alien boss' big @$$. What the heck!?2010-09-27 20:28:00

I sometimes wonder if this is still a swear word. They are all used so often the 'rudeness' is waning. I am not sure how I feel about how slack the rules are getting. I have heard worse cases than this.

I lol, but I am not sure everyone else does. :hrmf:

But seriously, @$$ is classified as a bad word. If you can get banned for saying it in LBPC, then it is classified as cuss.

No...

Anyway, I think they changed the rules for swear words on TV. I've heard about every one, and no beeps.

Not to mention the fact that I have heard something about that somewhere, but I seriously don't know where.

Yes, it is considered a bad word, but without good reason. Are you equally offended by butt? Howabout donkey? I'm not trying to be rude, but these kinds of things don't make any sense to me. Its not painful/harmful in any way, nor are any of the other "cuss" words. It is not a word itself that is bad, just the way in which it is used.

That's why it's rated E10+, not E. Most movies rated PG use minor swear words here and there, and the same goes for games.2010-10-07 01:29:00

Well, lots of things aren't allowed on LBPc. Like ***. And *****. This doesn't mean they're bad words, just are preferably not said. This website's software is a lot more strict than the real world!

(Don't mistake **** and **** for good words, though. Those two are terrible!

Is it really such a bad word? Really?

I guess if it's on TV before watershed kids can hear it therefore it can't be seen as a "bad" word any more as it's used regularly around kids and even on kids shows.2010-10-07 11:28:00

It's not bad. Your TOLD it's bad.

The reason why your taught to not say it is because hundreds of years ago only poor people used those words and the rich folk didn't. They taught their kids to not say them, then the stigma grew that is was bad because it would make you seem poor, they passed that down, and VOILA! You have the ignorance of pissy white-bred conservatives teaching generations of youth that words are bad and slowing humanities development by hundreds,if not thousands, of years! What happy days!

That's a very appealing polemic but, sadly, I don't think it stands up to close historical scrutiny. Unfortunately, nothing is ever that straightforward.

In the UK, the word in question is much less of a big deal than it seems to be in the US. That doesn't, however explain how it made it through the censors if it is indeed as offensive as this thread seems to indicate that it is.2010-10-09 16:21:00

A cuss word is a cuss word because they stand no purpose in a sentence, and they are mainly used as words of hatred. They don't need to be used because there are plenty of words that could simply take it's place; simply unnecessary.

The a-word is acceptable as it means donkey, but if a cuss word is primarily used for hatred, then it is deemed as a cuss word. The words aren't just "wrong", it's just the way they are mainly used which classifies them to be "wrong".

Which sentence seems is more upsetting?
"This room is messy as ****."
"This room is a mess."

I would link the history of each individual word but, you can imagine how the mods wouldn't like that.
Google it.

If it has no meaning, it is an expletive and therefore cannot be offensive. How could it possibly be offensive or represent hate if it has no meaning? It can't.

To me, swear words are simply a reflection of social graces. They are nonsensical in and of themselves, but used in the right (or wrong) social circumstances you will come across as rude. Really, it's no different than not saying "please" or "thank you" when you are expected to do so or not dressing appropriately at a formal event. Some people consider swear words to be rude, and people that choose to ignore that are by extension considered rude in that context.

As for me, I think swear words are funny as ****.

I'm going to jump in and give you guys a sensible answer. Now the problem here is the cultural differences between everyone posting the word in question spelt A - S- S is the derogative american English term.

In Britain this term is used for a donkey, it is used as a small insult as a term for stupid. (don't ask me why)

The actual British term which is an alternate word for "Buttocks" is actually spelt A - R - S - E
When pronounced in the correct manner both words sound different and hence forth British parents can tell their children off XD

The problem occurring in this thread is that you all presume that it is the American English word that is being used, this may or may not be the case and in the context used it probably is the case.
However with the spelling being that of American English and this being a British made game it is likely to a worldwide joke. The reason it gets past the ratings board without a problem is due to the British background of the game and the British background of the word in question.

So what I am saying is that the British aren't actually bothered by the word in question due to its correct meaning being a donkey. It is you lousy Americans XD (jk)
That have changed the meaning.

Good stuff. Though I am a "lousy american" and I say this is ridiculous. If we all stop telling our children the words are bad, then they would cease to be so. We should be teaching children to be, overall, nicer people. I work at a school and I can never get over the fact that lots of those kids are just so mean to each other. I just don't understand how people could be so mean to each other (without reason). As well as the fact that you can see some bigoted things projected through a child by the parents.

More on topic: if you don't like "bad" language, you should learn to ignore it because there is going to be a lot of that coming from people over the years.
