Obsessed with trophies?

Archive: 11 posts

What did gamers do with themselves before achievements/trophies? (enjoyed the games). People are obsessed with these things, and I think it's ruining people's perceptions of games.

Take Pixeljunk Eden for example. PJE is getting hammered on the PS forums as a crappy game, and the most used reason why? The trophies are hard to get. What a bunch of crock! Would trophy whores feel better if the game just came with the trophies already unlocked, so they don't have to put in any effort whatsoever?

I saw a post on the PS boards where someone asked if there was a way to pay for trophies with cash. Wow. People lending their accounts to other people so they can let someone else get a trophy. What are you gonna do, stare at that trophy with a smile that you didn't even earn?

Now, in the case of PJE, there are some legit gripes with the trophies. Due to the difficulty in achieving them, some of the trophies should have been silvers and golds, not the overwhelming amount of bronze ones in the game now.

I just don't understand this madness that overcomes gamers when achievements/trophies come into play.

If someone laughs at me for my lack of trophies, i'm going to laugh back at them harder for buying a game they didn't even like just to get achievements that have no effect on your games other than to try to prove has the bigger e-peen, and less of a life.

I did let Gia get some of my trophies, but only after they'd been reset when I reformatted my HDD. I had already earned them all and didn't want to go back to do it again.2008-08-02 13:34:00

I love the addition of achievements/trophies, but I don't concern myself with the ones I can't get. I play a game, enjoy it, and if I get bored I try to earn some trophies.

In the process of earning a trophy, sometimes you learn a new skill which is useful in the game; for example, LittleBigPlanet. One of the trophies is a height trophy, which means you have to reach a certain height. You will probably have to build something to get you to that height, which may teach you new aspects of the Create portion of the game you haven't learned yet. They are cool things, trophies, as long as you don't obsess yourself with them.

These new gaming features like achievements and trophies and other online components are cool, I'll admit, but I kinda dont think they should be a complete necessity to go after. Sure, achievements and trophies are cool, cause you get to try something interesting or challenging to earn it, but I dont like seeing people make such a big deal about it, whether they are to hard to get (as Harrisment described with PixelJunk Eden), or that people think that they HAVE to be in the game.

Plus, I think it just adds more onto the fact that alot of many game's features (especially online multiplayer) seem to get competitive. For Pete's Sake, it's a videogame. It's supposed to be fun. Not a competition

I pretty much dont do much online multiplayer because of people being competitive and people striving to be the best character. I always enjoy a single player experience more than multiplayer.

Atleast LittleBigPlanet will be game that wont revolve very much around competitive play.

So, yeah, that was kind of a rant :o...

I would be obsessed IF I had a game that supports trophies, which is rather sad 2008-08-04 03:03:00

Even LittleBigPlanet's competitive gameplay is woven into cooperating, which is cool.

I have to agree PJE is getting a bad rap, people bought it who would normally not play the game and then call it boring and hate the fact that some of the trophies are to hard to get. Like what Cartman said when i get bored with a game i can then try for one of the hard trophies. I think that is really what the hard trophies are there for, to get you to come back to the game and try something different.

anyways thats my 2 cents
