Getting on the cool page >.< FRUSTRATING

Archive: 12 posts

so as every lbp player experiences, that they make levels starting with nooby levels and getting over the top. wanting their lvl to get on the cool page. I have made many many attempts of getting on the cool page but mean players just rate 1 and leave mean comments and tags. so what i need help with is some ideas or suggestions on how to be found. i spend countless days, months, hours and no matter how much i upgrade i end up with 100 plays in one single month and yes i am reuploading over and over. so just please leave something that can help me! 2010-09-27 03:30:00

No offense, but being on the cool pages doesn't really mean anything anymore. It's just the place where shark and bomb survival challenges and other uncreative trash ends up. What you really want to go for are hearts, good comments, and plays. Good luck!2010-09-28 22:22:00

True dat, (although i have nothing against bomb survivals as long as they arent copied) you really need to concentrate on making a GREAT level, then just upload a few pics onto your com, make a F4F thread on the level showcase to start you off, then as you get good reviews and hearts more people will find your level... although it hurts to say the key is spamming, just make threads about your level... go to other forums as well but don't go overboard with the spam.

I didn't really word my sentence that well. I'm not saying that ALL of the levels on the cool pages are bad, just most of them are.2010-09-28 22:54:00

As far as I`m (and most of lbpc) is concerned, trying to get on the cool pages is a COMPLETE waste of time. If you do end up on them, then good for you, but don`t expect to be on more than a day -- if that. To cool pagers (my current term for trolls and cool page obsessed users), the CPs are a highland. And like a giantic game of KingQueen of the hill, they constantly strive for complete domination (even if it means copying others hard, or not-so-hard work, and wasting away their lives. Or even hacking). To them, achieving this would mean an infinite amount of fame and supremacy amongst LBP users (though almost always false).
Besides... do you really want to be prone to an onslaught of unreasonable ratings (good or bad) and comment spam?
So yeah. Waste of time. As we said: Go create a level with everything you`ve got, post in the forums, and make it f4f (as it seems to attract more people). Hope I didn`t bore you with my long-winded semi-biased rant.

Everything stated about Cool pages is true. The best advice I can give (as mentioned) is to create until your heart's content, then hit the F4F thread and post there. Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to create amazing looking levels, or levels that play well.

I myself have more of a knack for visual style than anything else. Truth is, I have a lot of difficulty with making a level that plays well and is FUN to play. It's just not the way my brain works, so I need to pay more attention to levels that I really enjoy playing and try to figure out what I enjoyed about the playability factor and try to emulate (not copy) those ideas.

It's a lot of work creating good levels, and some people make it look easier than others. Try not to get frustrated (I know it's hard sometimes not to), and scour this forum for idea's that you like, great tips, and tricks!

Happy building!

Quite a lot of good advice so far. I think Poms said it best when he said the Cool Levels are like fast food. Mostly simple quick and easy levels end up there. I think mainly because there is a huge curve of younger players that like easy to play levels. If you came up with a creative level that was more simple to play it might land there, but now with the republishing trick patched, I am not sure how anyone will make it. Though I think it is a bit of a waste of time to worry with it as suggested above.

My levels these days are fun, but generally more tricky and if I got anywhere near the cool levels they would be rated 1 star and hated. So I generally don't aim for that anyway.

I think your best shot at notoriety is making a great level that impresses folks here on LBPC and possibly land a Spotlight. Once you have one or more of those, your name starts drawing a few more plays when you post a level thread. If your levels really start to impress folks, then you start ending up in the hearted lists of well known creators as quite a few will use those to find great levels to play.

Good luck!

I wish I could get 100 plays on a level of mine. All of my levels plays put together is less than 100. D:

@Jfresh650...another option you might consider is submitting your level to one of the reputable Level Reviewers here at LBPC for a review, but initially publish the level locked and use a vault level to give out the key. One reason for doing this is to get some constructive feedback on your level from a perspective of how it stacks up with other levels, before you publish it for real--consider it a Beta test of sorts with a limited audience. This feedback can help you improve your level, similar to F4F, before you publish it for real. The other reason for doing this is in case you don't get to LBPC's Cool Levels or Spotlighted. Many members here at LBPC, as well as visitors to this site, read the reviews, like me for instance, and if you have a favorable review, you will most likely get additional plays from curious members.

Also, increase your friends list on PSN and tell all of your friends when you publish a level. I suggest publishing your finalized level locked for the first 12 hours or so, giving your friends plenty of time to play it and give it an appropriate rating, before unlocking it for the LBP world at large. Your levels will stand a better chance by doing this.

I hope this has been helpful information. Good luck.
