Nope. Click the spoiler below to know what chapter it happens in. No spoilers, only the chapter number.

Chapter 3 or 4, I think.

is condemned 2 really scary?

I saw a speed run of the first Condemned, and that alone was scary. I imagine part 2 is worse...even if speed runned. Speed ran. Speed run'd...?

...Whatever. x_x

Scary. To be honest, it's not as creepy as, say, Silent Hill, considering Silent Hill's monsters are ungodly, demonic abominations. However, you get plenty of scares (I have, and I'm through Chapter 4...), and you're always in tension. Still, your awesomeness (your character's, rather) is such that detracts from the scary experience. It's not the same being some clueless guy or girl with a crowbar like in Silent Hill, compared to Dead Space, where you have an awesome suit and many cool weapons.

Trying to compare two very different games, though. And yes, Dead Space has made me yelp.

Without a doubt the Shalebridge Cradle in Thief: Deadly Shadows. There have been loads of write ups about it and many consider it to be the scariest level ever made due to how incredibly immersive it is.

Very good article about it (10 pages - contains spoilers)

http://gillen.cream.org/thecradle.pdf

Another article (no spoilers):

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/games/tds.ars/4

Shalebridge Cradle

There is one jewel when it comes to level design, that I feel it deserved a separate paragraph. It shines that bright. I'm sorry as a perpetually aspiring Designer, I just go on and on when it comes to this. Just bear with me for a second. The mission in the asylum of Shalebridge Cradle is, in the more or less qualified opinion of this reviewer, one of the top five levels ever made by humans. Worth the price of admission by itself.

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/004/software/thief-deadly-shadows/TDS16_thumb.jpg
Pictured: The interior of Shalebridge Cradle.
Not pictured: Me filling my shorts.

Now, I'm not an impressionable person. In fact, I have to admit I'm rather desensitized about scary things. Hell, I went though System Shock 2 without problems. SS2 was great, but it didn't scare me because I knew the game was trying to scare me. Does that make sense? There's an illusion that sometimes breaks when you know what's up. It's like a magician explaining a trick to you, or a politician saying he'll lower taxes. In other words, I'm not scared if I know you're actively trying to do it. It just shows too much.

That said, Shalebridge Cradle scared me like you wouldn't believe. There even came a point where I had to take a break because it was getting too intense. Let me just say this: At the foot of the stairs to the Attic, I was genuinely scared. When I reached the top, my heart was pounding so fast I had to stop for a while, quit back to desktop, do something else whatever. I just couldn't take it.

Not very often do we come across levels that deliver such an intense experience. Shalebridge Cradle is one of those things you have to experience for yourself. My telling you about it will fall short. We're talking about a level that manages to create (and maintain!) one of the thickest, most-penetrating, and most-visceral fear atmospheres I have ever encountered in gaming. The use of lighting, shadows, and later on in the level, depth-of-field effects combine themselves well with a bare and decayed ? but imposing ? architecture. As you progress through the remains of the cursed building, you can't help but to feel the constant pressure of the threat that's out there carefully waiting for you. A threat that is masterfully done, not by overt or direct elements, but by the ever-present subtlety of the sights and sounds in your surroundings.

That level managed to generate one of the thickest atmospheres of tension, threat and yes, fear that I ever played. The cold, dark, and damp environments of the asylum will instantly feel constraining, oppressing you with a feeling of threat and danger that is ever present throughout it. You don't want to be inside that place. You will hate being inside that place. It's a little bit weird how, perhaps without intending it, T: DS managed to deliver one of the purest, strongest horror gaming experiences inside a game that's not really about horror at all. I don't want to spoil it, that's why I'm a bit mum when it comes to detailing this experience. It's something you need to go through on your own. In complete darkness. Alone, during the night. You'll thank me in the morning. Or you'll want to kill me. Both are fine choices.

Shalebridge Cradle's use of sound is perfect. And I don't usually throw that word around just like that. Its visuals are fantastic and the mission design itself is creative ? particularly during the level's last stages ? and tight as a drum. All those things combine, like Voltron, to make what's easily one of the best FPS levels I played in years. It's not to be missed.

I was playing Doom 3 on a hot summer evening with the window open, its racking up the tension and just as something jumps out at me in gamea moth flies in the window and flutters against my face.

It took about 10 minutes, one dead moth, and a strong whiskey for me to calm down. Mrs P laughed her *** off.

tbh I have a bit of a problem with his name. Sorry to say this but unless he has a number of victoria crosses he is probably not the UK's finest Hero, unless of course he is serving in Iraq in which case I apologise. Bit disrespectful to heroes of WW1 & 2 I would have thought.

I'm in the process of playing Dead Space at the moment, and thus far I'm not finding it that scary. This may change as the game progresses of course, but at the moment it's a bit tame. I'm not sure how to describe it.

Maybe I just don't find the whole "aliens killing everyone on a spaceship" thing that creepy. Maybe I just haven't got to the really good bits yet. *shrug* I'll let you guys know if this changes as the game progresses.

Now as for scary moments I've run into in the past, let's see...

I play a lot of survival horror games, but these would probably have to be the ones that stand out most in my mind. Keep in mind I always play horror games late at night when everyone else is asleep for the best atmosphere. It just wouldn't be right otherwise:

Resident Evil 2 - Probably my absolute most played through single-player game ever. Loved it to death. Resident Evil 1 was more scary for the voice acting than anything intentional. Mr X on the other hand, scared the absolute crap out of me the first time I played through RE:2 from the other side of the car. Creepy trenchcoated jerk likes to punch through walls when you least expect it.

Silent Hill - This one did my head in. When you enter rooms on one floor and reappear somewhere else, and suddenly the walls are rusty metal dripping with blood, and there are little midgets with knives that want to stab you in the shins.

Fatal Frame - A really good one to play late at night. Walking through a haunted house with nothing but a camera = creepiness factor |..../|

F.E.A.R - Stupid creepy little girls! That bit with the ladder nearly gave me a heart attack. Only problem with this game was that they divided the game into "action" segments and "scary" segments. Once you got used to that, you could anticipate the the scary bits coming. Still a good game though.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - THIS one takes the cake for me as far as creepy games go. Anyone who played it knows what I'm talking about. In addition to a health meter, there was a sanity meter that could be dropped when you were damaged by particular enemies, resulting in certain...hallucinations. There were way too many disturbing moments in this game to list. Definitely grab this one if you can find it. That **** bathroom.....

He saved a baby from a burning bulding so a newspaper made their headline "UK'S FINEST HERO". He didn't do anything wrong, so stop bad mouthing him.

Clock Tower - I played when I was like 6 or 7 years old, and whenever the noise of the scissor came, I **** sum bricks. Especially when I closed myself in a toilet room to get safe, then this freaking guy knocked on the door, and then.. well those who played that game know what happened then

Speaking of Clock tower, anyone played Haunting Ground? It's the same developers, and shares many similarities to Clock Tower 3.
I can say it's....Quite the experience.
Scare me. Shock me. Shake me.
It's almost impossible to predict when you're going to run into trouble; It might just be the most original "Horror Game" too.
What can you do? Run...Just mostly run, or you're done for, and you're literally on the edge of your seat when you're doing so. It's a Hide and Seek gameplay.
The music is horrible...I don't mean horrible as in bad, it's horrible as in it makes things a lot more scarier. The second you spot the enemy, BAM, the music starts, your heart skips a beat, and you don't know what to do anymore.
The visuals are even more amazing. I'm amazed what they did with just a PS2 game (Bearing in mind we have PS3s right now )

Honestly, I've played and finished a lot of Horror games.
Haunting Ground is a game I haven't gotten to finish yet >_>

Heh...I remember that. It's the very start of Haunting Ground.
Though, this is nothing compared to what the game really is later on -_- The enemy you saw has an IQ of -40.

There aren't a lot of enemies in the game, it's like Shadow of the Collosus, with Bosses only. Pretty much like that.

2nd enemy is MUCH harder, and the chase theme song is creepier.

Thinking of my first games, I remember how I played the first tomb raider and I did the training before starting storyline, and everytime my slave (I can't think of a better word, sorry!) apperaed and made that noise I got scary. I tried to kill him but I couldn't

That's why I never played that game. But I like the noise Lara Croft did if you let her climb or jump LOL

That used to be it for me, but then I played Resident Evil : Nemesis. I have to say that Nemesis got me pretty stressed, he would not show up for a long time and then suddenly come out of nowhere and all of a sudden you had to run to the nearest exit (you do not want to mess with the guy, specially on hard mode) and you always ended up fumbling with the door while he's *running* after you and not just walking up casually. He even runs way faster than you.

I'm hoping RE5 is good, though I still haven't gotten around to finishing Code Veronica X or buying RE4. I might just skip them and jump right into 5...

LSD. (not the drug, the game. ) I had nightmares the night that hatman first showed up, floating slowly towards me. Same thing when some lady's head flew off her neck and flew towards me, then the screen flashing red. Kind of funny since the game is a dream simulator.2009-02-06 17:16:00

Playing Cold Fear, me and my friend in pitch black, we where in a hallway, heard this noise behind us, turned, it was nothing, turned back to see this *beep'in* scariest mother trucker bolting towards us at like 90Mph, scared the crap out of us.. LUCKILY the music playing was Must Be Love, by Madness. This took away from the air of OMG!ness, which was good.2009-02-06 21:10:00

Lol, that was a good scare.

Probably one of the scariest for me is the part in Bioshock when you go to get the shot gun in the middle of the room and then the light goes out....

And pretty much any part with Houdini Splicers.

Also in Dead Space when you forget to shoot a dead Necromorph and it jumps up and eats you.

>.> the lights went out alot in Bioshock. lol

I mean when you first get the shotgun, it's in the middle of the room next to a corpse. You go up and get it then the lights go out and you can hear the Splicers coming. It seems that later on in the game, Bioshock forgets that it's trying to be scary. I go into a room where there could be a perfect scare but there isn't. Then again, I didn't do much exploring on Poseidon Plaza because it scared the **** out of me....hmm....I guess in that sentence I just proved myself wrong.

Dead Space when the little arm grabs you for the first time.

R2, first time one of those fish chimera eats you.

RE4, just relaxing shooting the fish and all of a sudden the lake monster jumps up and devours you

At Andrew Ryan's place when all the splicers magically become 10X harder to beat.

RE4 doesn't have any good scares, which is kind of disappointing. RE4 had potential to be really scary.

Resident Evil 2, that one hallway with the windows where the zombie arms just burst through and try to grab you, kind of like the dogs in the first one.

Hmm... I can't think of any other moment in a game that really just makes me jump like that.

Um. Dogs in RE1 were classic. But then again so was that whole game...
First town area in RE4 was terrifying the first time.
Also before you get a gun in Dead Space

Shalebridge Cradle in Thief 4 was absolutely terrifying. There were so many unscripted events that just scared the beejeesus out of me.
I remember encountering one of the first undead inmates and killing him. I dragged the body away and hid it in some shadowy corner. I then walked away to finish exploring... When I came back the body was gone.
In a moment of panic I ran to hide, only to ambushed by the same inmate from a nearby corner.
I nearly had a heart attack.

The Silent Hill series also provide several dozen scariest scenes for me, although that game is much more of a psychological horror than a traditional scary jumpstart you get from other games. In a way I'm sure that's why Silent Hill is (Or Was) such an awesome franchise. A particular scene that haunts me besides the several encounters with Pyramid Head must be when you first discover a Mannequin Demon in SH2.

Then there was Eternal Darkness, which after playing again recently I'll admit did not age very well. But the story was pimp, the insanity effects were genius and at the time the game scared the crap out of me.
Particularly the notorious "Bathtub Scene".

Then there is System Shock 2. The scariest 'scene' has to be everything from the moment you press play, 'till the moment you choose to quit.
That game was terrifying. The limitations with graphics and effects only seems to increase the terror in that game.

Strangely, I never got remotely spooked when playing Dead Space though... I got a bit startled once or twice, but soon I just began to know what to expect so I was never really on my toes any more. The unknown is always far scarier...

Same goes for Doom 3. That game was a bit shocking for the first couple of levels, but then they just kinda ran out of things to throw at you.
Demonic Imps jumping out of the walls just stops being scary after three or four times.

The first Silent Hill scared the crap out of me. The elementary school remains one of my favorite scary levels.

System Shock 2 was also very scary. Nothing gets you more paranoid than respawning zombies.

Shalebridge Cradle? That's the orphanage right? Wasn't that in Thief 3, as in Deadly Shadows? Yeah, that was scary as hell.

I am an idiot.
Yeah, it was 3, Deadly Shadows. The big tip should have been the fact that Thief 4 hasn't been made yet...
Thanks for correcting me Milo.

I always remember starting up the first level of Unreal for the first time. I was around 8 years old at the time. Oh god, those screams. D:

The encounter with the first regenerator in RE4 gave me a good jump.

Half-Life: Opposing Force still gets to me every time I play it, too.

Probably when my 360 red ringed on me 2 days before the release of GTAIV. Ended up getting the PS3 version instead. Maybe that's not so much scary as it is infuriating.

When I was little I had a Friday the 13th NES game. That scared the crap out of me. Jason could pop up at any moment.

Ravenholm in Half-Life 2. ****, all those headcrab zombies scared the hell out of me D:

And of course Bioshock.. so many scary moments... like you're in some kind of room with all kind of closets built in the wall, you walk past them find a dead end and you walk back.. Poof, suddenly one jumps/falls (can't remember..) out of one.

Lets see for me it wasnt really the game so much as it is the circumstances i was playing in.

So one summer i was on vacation at the beach, we were staying in a big house on the ocean with my cousins, my cousin brought his 360 to the beach, and we stayed on the bottom floor in a small room with two bunk beds, My cousin snores constantly so i had to go in the little living area with a comfy couch outside the bedroom, there was a little kitchen in the corner of the room with a small refridgerator. Beside my cousin, I was the only one on that floor of the house, everyone else was asleep. I turned on his 360, went to the demos area, and the first thing I saw was BioShock Demo, I had no idea what it was, for some reason I thought it was an old game, so i didnt play it till I had played like 6 other demos in the list. The game started up, and The cutscne started, i thought to myself "holy crap this isnt an old game at all" later, im in rapture in the bathysphere, and Atlas is talking. The splicer is in front of the window of the bathysphere, and he screams, I get chills, and he jumps up on the bathysphere, before he starts beating on it, the refridgerator lurches, and makes a loud sound, And I somehow manage to mess the pillow on the other end of the couch. xD

Scared the bujeezus out of me

Deadspace....many parts of it. I never actually had my heart leap in my chest or had a physical reaction to a game until I played Deadspace. I'm playing it now so I can only imagine what I'm in store for. Love it!2009-03-02 05:32:00

Don't laugh at me, but 2x Nazi Zombies.
yes, I know, I know.

One time I was waching a window, and Made the mistake of thinking other players had my back, and I got damaged, so Instinct kicked in, Run,Rump,Turn.
Nothing.
Think it's just my head playing tricks on me, so I go back to making zombies GIT OFFA MAH LAWN. Get hit again, turn around, nothing. Get hit AGAIN, Last stand, and two giant orange eyes infront of me, my brother sais i jumped up two feet. My friends say my knife went into it's skull before their bullets did.

Other time, My friend went into last stand, I turn a corner and theres 50 zombies bearing down on me. I pooped a molotov cocktail, since this was my first time playing nazi zimbies.

Scariest gaming moment ever for me was the first half-life...

Early hours of the morning, lights off, sound system up, and my house-mate (female) who couldn't sleep watching me play.

I'd just scraped through a firefight with little health left, and came across a bridge.

The adrenaline from the last few minutes was starting to fade when all of a sudden this huge monster appeared and smashed up the bridge...

...and my house-mate screamed! Practically in my ear!

I almost pooped.

Since then I've never felt comfortable playing FPS games with someone sitting right next to me
