Realistic Waves

Archive: 11 posts

I don't know much about this, but is there a feature in LBP2 that would allow for better looking waves rather than what we have from the POTC pack?

E.g instead of the water changing depth we could have a wave something like this.

It would be great for surfing mini-games etc.

And now with the delay i really think they should add this.

good idea, can be used in a horror level as well. for example you open up a door and giant wave flushes in and with it a creature.2010-09-25 14:18:00

So shark survival in an office block then?

Could be the fact our water behaves like it does is due to pure hardware limitation. The physics processor on a PS3 might just not be able to hack it.

I know on my old 40GB machine (which YLOeD btw) the fan would kick into high gear and lag would kick in even before i maxed out movable objects. My guess is that real nice water effects require banks of serious hardware to render realisticly.

It's not possible in the BETA. Maybe we could make something good with water drops. We can make a very realistic firehose with the Creatinator and a very high-speed flow. So it's also possible with an emitter, but it doesn't really look-like a wave.

The only thing I could come up with would be a slow-motion wave. Make your shape with the animated material, tweak the speed of the texture, and add slow-motion sceneries behind (like people running slowly etc...) This may look good.

DEFINITLEY!!!! Keen for a mean wakebording level, the boat could put out a proper wake and you could have the direct control seat hooked up to a wakeboard wif a sackbot on it!2010-12-16 00:13:00

Anyway, as for the suggestion, this would require dynamic water, something the game can't do. It'd be nice to have it as some sort of scripted effect, though.

You could gie the EFFECT of a giant wave rushing through a city by using gravity manipulation techniques like in these levels:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxnpkt8Vv3Q
By tilting the whole city on its side and twisting the cameras so it looks normal you could raise the water level at a steady pace and give the impression that a huge wave is rolling over the town. Ill make an example next time im in the beta and take some pics to show you
