Dead Rising 2

Archive: 74 posts

I picked up my copy on Monday and I have been having a ton of fun with it. Having not played the first DR I wasn't sure what to expect but man is this game good! Here are some thoughts (possible spoilers):

Weapons

The most striking and enjoyable thing about this game is that EVERYTHING CAN BE USED AS A WEAPON! Yes, EVERYTHING. Pick up a bottle of ketchup and squeeze some onto a zombie. Watch them look at their chest in confusion before impaling them in the stomach with a pitchfork and hoisting them over your shoulder like a sack of trash. Jam a dinosaur mask onto a zombies head, aim your circular saw and decapitate said zombie. Or how about going into a restaurant kitchen, finding a frying pan, heating the frying pan on a stove and then jamming the scorching hot frying pan onto a zombies face. The possibilities are endless but things really get over-the-top with the new Combo Card system.

Any item with a wrench icon can be combined with another item. As you level up, save certain survivors or find posters to take inspiration from you will unlock Combo Cards. These cards will give you the specific formula needed to create a weapon of mass carnage! So go ahead and combine diamonds with a flashlight to create a light saber. Watch limbs fly and blood shower as you cut through the zombie horde. Fancy fire? Boxing gloves + Gasoline = DING DING, ROUND OVER! The great thing is that you earn PP when using combo weapons which help you level up faster (and therefore unlock more moves and combo cards). Another important point is that you don't need to have discovered a Combo Card in order to create combo weapons (the proper combo card icon will appear for these weapons once they are unlocked through leveling etc). This really encourages people to experiment and get creative

Zombies and Psychos

This game is all about zombies and more then any other zombie-themed game they really are the star of the show. The are tons of different character models and literally hundreds on-screen at at any given time. Some reviews have mentioned slowdown but in my 10 hours of playing I have only experienced this once and it lasted approx. 1.5 seconds. The best thing about killing zombies? Dismemberment physics! There are so many ways to chop off an arm, hack off a leg, smash a head to smithereens. Zombies can be cut vertically, horizontally and everything in between. The first time you split a zombie in two (down the middle) with a souped up cement saw and see their body slowly separate is truly a priceless moment. But then so is running over a crowd a crowd of zombies with a lawnmower with blood showering over your character and body parts flying everywhere. There is a lot of gruesome killing in this game and each kill will bring a smile to your face

Psychos are a different breed altogether. These are human characters that are literally insane and each presents a unique boss fight. I don't want to spoil anything so let's just say each one has their own unique personality and each introductory cut-scene will have you laughing hard. Something I found very cool is that these mini-bosses are optional. If you came to the fight unprepared you can come back to take them on later if there is still time (everything being tied to the in-game clock). A lot of there guys I stumbled upon by complete accident and that is a major factor that makes DR2 so interesting, there is a surprise around every corner! I am near the end of my first (of many) playthroughs and I have only defeated/discovered a fraction of the psychos populating the game world. There is a lot to see and do in DR2 and you will NOT see it all the first time through. If one of these guys is giving you a lot of trouble don't worry. Come back on your next playthrough (when you are at a much higher leve)l and kick the crap out of them!

Against the Clock

The premise of the story (without spoiling anything) is a zombie outbreak and the inevitable military intervention. The military will arrive in 72 hours and everything is linked to the clock. You wrist watch will become your best friend as you learn how to manage your time and figure out the most efficient order to complete quests. When I first read previews of the game I was a bit uncertain about this mechanic. After all, what if I just wanted to have fun and not worry about time running out. Well here is how it works. If you miss a story mission you will be presented with 3 options:

Load
Restart Story
Continue Playing

Loading will obviously take you back to your last save point. Restarting the story will allow you to restart while maintaining your level and any combo card you have acquired (I did this twice on my first playthrough, relatively close to the beginning). If you continue to play, side missions will continue to be available so you can still rescue survivors, fight psychos or ignore everything and simply kill zombies! AT ANY TIME you can choose to restart the story and carry over any character leveling you have done. You can play this game anyway you like, the choice is yours.

Now assuming you want to see the story and how things unfold (I focused my first playthrough on the story) you will need to be conscious of the clock. This mechanic not only makes sense in the context of the story but adds a real sense of urgency and intensity that I have rarely felt in gaming. There were a couple a instances where I was frantically running toward my objective wondering if I would make it in time! It also means I was ignoring a lot of the side quests and psycho battles which already had me excited about my next playthrough. Any game that can have you planning and anticipating your next playthrough long before you are done your first is pretty special.

I will be back later with more thoughts (at work right now). In the meantime I encourage anyone who is a fan of either action games or zombies (who doesn't like zombies?) to pick this game up. You will not be disappointed!

Terror is Reality - Spending Cash

The multiplayer portion of the game is called Terror is Reality. The set up is a pay-per-view special where killing zombies in creative ways is the name of the game. There are 9 events with each having it's own special intro and you can expect some funny color commentary as you slay the undead. Each "show" has 4 players and 4 rounds. The last round is always the same with the first 3 being randomized. There are both Ranked and Unranked options. This simple premise is surprisingly fun. It gets very competitive and when there are only a few points separating 1st to 4th place your adrenaline will get pumping (mine does anyway lol). The best thing about TIR is that the money you earn can be carried over to the single player game. Your money is directly linked to your performance and mimics the total pints earned for each show. In other words, if you finished with 70,000 points then you just made $70,000. This mode is the most efficient way to earn large amounts of money which you will most definitely be wanting to spend in the single player experience.

See, there are pawnshops scattered around Fortune City selling all kinds of fun stuff. Each pawn shop has it's own unique items and you will definitely want to discover them all. One of the first things that caught my eye within 30 minutes of my initail playthrough was a sports car on display in one of the malls. I immediately ran towards it to see if I could hop in but was met with the following message: LOCKED. So where are the keys? In one of the pawn shops of course and they cost $500,000! I am on my second playthrough now and finally earned enough money to unlock the car. Cost? $500K. Joy to be had driving through a shopping mall and running over hundreds of zombies? PRICELESS! Oh, and this is one of the cheaper items you can buy so chances are you will be playing a lot of TIR

The only picture I've soon for this is the giant mobile phone one. Some of it sounds very gruesome, luckily I'm in Australia so I can't actually see blood (they hid the drug in our swine flu vaccines). Do you get hit by huge swarms all the time like in L4D or just a few?

I hope you are never face with this decision (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biW2i9yK-10) when playing though.

Also, is there coop or multiplayer things? I'm not a huge fan of L4D since I've only played the apparently horrible sequel by the way (I thought it was okay).

At any given time there are literally hundreds of zombies on screen at once. Zombie behavior in this game is different from L4D which is a fast-paced FPS with a strong emphasis on gunplay. In other words, you not going to have zombies leaping at you from 10 meters away or sprinting toward you. The zombies are passive until you get withing range at which point they will shamble towards you and the more active ones will lunge out.

The game has both co-op and multiplayer and I will be posting more thoughts on both later

I pre-ordered my copy on Amazon from a bit, even if I wasn't sure that the game was cool, unfortunately I choose that the game has to be shipped together with Castlevania and Enslaved, so I must wait a bit before it arrives, and I will have to Platinum Castlevania first. 2010-09-25 06:39:00

Yeah I am trying to play it as much as I can before Castlevania comes out lol. I played the Enslaved demo and was not impressed. It seems they are trying too hard to emulate and compete with UC2. Anyway, I am sure you will enjoy DR2.

Original post has been updated. My next post will talk about the in-game clock and why it is one of the best and most unique features in the game. Do not fear the clock people!

can you drive cars?
does it get bored if you do the same thing all over again?

- Not sure what you are asking. Kill them?

- Many of the items/weapons can be used creatively as "traps". Example: Find some firecrackers and toss them towards a group of zombies. Zombies are attracted to the light and noise. As they are gathered around the fireworks display feel free to toss a stick of dynamite in their midst. KABOOM!

- You can chop off anything but generally chopping off a body part is fatal to the zombie. There are exceptions...

- Yes

- Yes again as well as motorcycles.

- I am not bored yet and there is still so much more to discover

Another example of a 'trap' is to use the remote helicopter.
Set it to fly and run away,
the helicopter will attrackt loads of zombies to it
Then you can through a bomb into the crowd

I got this game on friday and its amazing!

The psychos prove to be very challenging which is fun
and co-op is a blast

For those of you who are put off by the time limit, when you restart the game, only the story resets, you keep all the 'level up' stuff you got.
So you can play it as many times as you like, becasue there is no way you will get it all done 1st time.

And after all, there are multiple endings

I definatly recomend it!

After the time is up the game ends. Then, if like the last game, you unlock a longer time limit, and if you beat THAT, you unlock unlimited time mode, which will be epic.

How would you define the performance OCK?
I read somewhere that it's pretty bad, but I don't trust that source.
I'm tired of lazy ports, even if bad ports won't prevent me to buy a funny game.

Overall the performance is strong. If you build up a posse of survivors and keep them with you instead of dropping them off at the safe house then there can be slowdown in some of the busier areas but nothing drastic ( I never experienced this on my first playthrough because I immediately escorted survivors to the safe house). There is quite a bit of loading but from what I understand this applies to both the PS3 and 360 versions so it has nothing to do with being a lazy port.

Ultimately this is one of the most unique and enjoyable gaming experiences I have ever had. More then any other element the fun factor of a game is the most important criteria (for me at least). DR2 has that in spades! You will be smiling, laughing and having a great time the whole way through and long after you have completed the game

That's it, that's the most important thing, but I was just curious, and I think that your opinion is surely reliable for my criteria.

Well I am now midway through my 3rd playthrough and I am still discovering new things, still addicted to the formula, still having as much fun as my first playthrough. I will update my original post one last time today but if you aren't convinced already then this game is not for you lol. DR2 deserves to sell well and the idea of building upon this game with a sequel a couple of years down the road has me excited, the possibilities are endless (but this will only happen if it sells!).2010-09-28 09:25:00

Finally acquired "Arthur's Helmet" from the Ante Up mission, took a couple of hours trying to beat this clown at poker lol. Now I just need to accumulate 2,000,000 to buy the boots and my armor set is complete! The armor is a reference to the CAPCOM classic Ghosts and Goblins. What's cool is that it has the same effect as in that game! When you have all pieces of armor on you life is doubled. As you take damage pieces break off until your left in your heart covered underwear!

This game has quite a few easter eggs. You can find the jumpsuit from "Kill Bil"l, there is a very cool reference to the horror classic "Psycho" (I won't spoil it for you) and of course we have a Blanka mask that can be used for you own fashion needs or be fashioned into an electrifying weapon

Indeed. However, if I used that in my post (being that it is the original source material) very few people besides yourself would have known what I was talking about lol. Also, I imagine the developers had Kill Bill in mind when adding the jumpsuit seeing as how slaughtering hundreds of zombies with a katana directly parallels the famous scene at the end of the movie.

Regarding favorite weapon, your choices are almost guaranteed to change as you unlock combo cards, trust me. The blade gloves are very cool though and one of my favorites

I completely agree that Kill Bill will be where most recognise it from and that it is responsible for all of the recent references, I just thought I'd post the original source so those not in the know could see where it started.

The post is appreciated. It's like when people fall in love with a cover of a song not knowing that it was originally recorded X amount of years ago lol. I imagine lots of people fell in love with that jumpsuit not knowing the source material.

I am 2/3 done my third playthrough and only just discovered the movie theater. This game keeps surprising me in so many ways Also, good luck to anyone going for the platinum trophy, this is one of the harder games to get it for. All but two of the trophies are non-story related. There is a gold trophy for killing 72,000 zombies (at the end of my first playthrough I had 5400...). The few who have obtained this trophy say you literally have to spend the entire 6 hours (the 72 in-game hours are approx. 6 real hours) driving up and down the Platinum Strip in the SUV (which, btw, costs $2,000,000) running over zombies. 6 HOURS STRAIGHT. RUNNING. OVER. ZOMBIES. As much as I love this game that is too much even for me lol.

I knew there would be a trophy that would just irritate with how long it would take to obtain...and it looks like killing 72,000 zombies will be it lol. Oh well, I will enjoy each and every kill I complete as I journey to 72,000. Almost finished my first playthrough, and I am surprised with how much I accomplished. I saved most everyone, except a couple side missions I didn't make it to and I missed to of the psycho missions. All in all, I think I have done pretty well so far and will be happy to play through this game several more times.2010-09-30 17:22:00

Also, any tips for beating Leon? (The TIR contestant) I had no long range weapons last time I fought him, and so I was forced to melee him which just got me killed.

There is a cheap trick I stumbled upon by accident. Go to the maintenance room near the rock formation (NOT the one inside the formation). Open the door and wait for Leon to drive towards you. If you can jump out of the way (I am guessing you do not have the dodge technique yet) he might drive right in there and get stuck. Then simply melee him to death. I actually beat him the hard way though on my first playthrough. I ran around the environment finding things to throw at him and healing myself when life got low. I also had a couple of handguns which helped. Never forget that EVERYTHING can be thrown and if the weapon connects it will do damage

The LMG is quite a good choice for killing Psychos with,
you can find on in the vault at the Yucatan Casino, next to the elevator to the nightclub.
Or you can buy on for 20,000 at a shop

I have lots of the Psychos, and not used painkillers (I didnt know they even existed XD).

CO-OP does help with Psychos but I have never done it that way, you just need to work out a stratergy.

For example, seymour, your dont even need to be close, just wait in the hotel reception and shoot him from there.
And slappy, run along to the food store, he doesnt follow you in.

I have been trying to figure out the best way to make money that does not involve playing TIR. I found the following strategy while looking through the GFAQS forums yesterday which I have edited here:

You will first need to acquire all 3 Gambling Mags

Gambling Mag 1 = Royal Flush Plaza - 2nd Floor Ragazine
Gambling Mag 2 = Palisades Mall - 2nd Floor Stan's Large Print books & mags
Gambling Mag 3 = Silver Strip - Shamrock Casino (the one with the SUV) behind the bar a the back

Go to Slot Ranch Casino and head in the direction of the food court. Right on the border of the casino/food court there is a big pink slot machine against the wall. Clear out any zombies so they don't keep getting in your way and then simply keep betting $1000 (I recommend coming in with at least $50K to be on the safe side). In 40 minutes I went from $250K to 2 million and promptly bought the SUV keys. I then spent the remaining time on the clock driving up and down the strip going for the 1000 gas zombie kills and just got it in time!

I hope you find this strategy as useful as I did. It seems like th quickest and most hassle free way of making some serious cash

I just picked up DR2 today, Zombrex edition. As soon as I opened it I started laughing at the pamphlet, band-aid, syringe and tin box xD2010-10-03 18:51:00

I read about that ending and thought it was one of the best.

Chuck sees his daughter is gone, and he just breaks, and doesn't care about anything anymore, letting the zombies eat him alive. Pretty sad

Finally played co-op with a good friend over the weekend. I loved that there was no lag and the voice chat worked perfectly. The only thing better then decimating hordes of zombies is doing it with a friend 2010-10-04 22:11:00

I just finished my first playthrough of DR2 today as well, completed the overtime portion, so I assume I did well. Ended at level 36 I believe and saved 45 survivors. Can't wait to play through again.2010-10-06 00:06:00

I almost done my 4th playthrough and have 64% of the trophies. Now that I have unlocked all combo cards I would have to say the Auger is probably the most entertaining weapon, it's just so over-the-top lol.2010-10-06 19:26:00

Great game, I love the weapon combinations. The game lets you wreak havoc on zombies your way. A little creativity and ingenuity goes a long way.

All-in-all I'd say my favourite combo weapon is the Knife Gloves (bowie knife + boxing gloves). They're fast, fairly powerful, and if you aim with LT (Xbox), you can block zombie attacks.

However...

The following spoiler is...well, a spoiler. It pretty much ruins the entire game. If you have not yet completed the game, and intend to do so, don't click the little "+". Kthxbai.
I am extremely disappointed in the end of the game--more specifically, the fights with Sullivan and TK. In the case of Sullivan, every one of his attacks deals about 3 notches of health and knocks you off the scaffolding, and once he goes below 50%, every weapon I used on him caused him to disarm me, throw me on the ground, and hit me. This fight isn't "difficult" like they were probably aiming for, it's unrealistic (which suits the game just fine), stupid, and above all, frustrating beyond comprehension.

TK's fight is even worse. You start off on the wrong foot when they decided to disarm you, removing everything from your inventory (weapons, healing, you name it), and leaving not much around you. You basically fight him with your fists, with extremely limited healing items. If he hits you once, he slams you against a wall and hits you several times in a row, and takes half your health, regardless of how fast you can successfully complete the on-screen prompts. If that wasn't bad enough, the whole fight you have to worry about your daughter and that woman in charge of CARE. TK will occasionally kick the winch holding the duo suspended above the hordes of zombies, lowering them ever closer to their impending doom. To prevent this, you have to allocate whatever little time you spend not getting your posterior kicked to run up to the winch, and mash your A button (Xbox) to raise them back up again.

The only way I could beat either of them was to abuse the system and use the jump kick continuously and throw things at TK; even then it was disappointing. Now, you may be thinking, "yeah, it's hard for you because you suck." Let's get that notion out of our heads, shall we? I'm an avid gamer, and though I wouldn't say I'm a master of games, I've yet to find a game that I'm not at least "pretty good" at. Wait, you weren't thinking that? Well... good.

This ending is all based on Overtime Mode... and don't even get me started about the gas-zombies.

i used the ''Camp and Shoot''' trick at Sullivan the Ac130 need to blow up holes behind his platform
when the Ac did thath go to the left hole and go on the construction thing
now you have a clear shot at him
but he takes like 27 50 call bullets so take some snipers from the weapon shop at the far right of the map at the first floor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdZMvR67iQE
for TK just go left at the fire effect stuff and grap a weapon and hit the crap out of him but you need to dodge everymove of him cause they are strong and anoying

Hey OCK, I was wondering if you've unlocked any sort of 'Unlimited' gamemode by beating it that many times. I'm not the biggest fan of time limits, so I really want something that isn't as pushing.2010-10-08 02:33:00

There is no "Unlimited" game mode per se but you can basically create your own. When starting a game simply fail the very first Zombrex mission and the countdown timer will disappear with all story missions automatically failed. You then have the freedom to run around without any pressure and do whatever you want. At any time you can restart the story and carry over any leveling progress you have made.

As stated in my original post, the clock is on of the best features of the game and helps to differentiate it from everything else out there. I repeat again what I wrote in my OP: DO NOT FEAR THE CLOCK!

the best time to make a freeroam is close to the end
cause you can get everywhere
only read if you already beated the waiting clock for the Army
Before the army guy if you want the best Freeroam with normal zombies or after it with the best freeroam + gas zombies

So, what? You have to fail before you get to the army guy or how do you do this?

Lol, sorry if I came off rude but you kinda read that wrong. I meant 'So, what do you do?' Not 'So what?'.

And what's this mission called? Or is it obvious its the final one?

I also saw a video of the special zombies. They look like a pain in the rear.
