Any tips for character/level details?

Archive: 15 posts

I'm working on my third level now (which should be pretty cool, if I don't get discouraged), and I want it to be better than my last two levels. One thing that really drags my levels down is I don't know how to design good looking characters and levels. It sounds like you need to use stickers, but that still doesn't seem to help me get the detail the good people get. Any tips for a newbie?2010-09-24 01:28:00

The only thing I could tell you is to see how Media Molecule made their characters. How they used the stickers and same goes with the level stickering. It's helpful to see how stickers work, which have better textures, etc...2010-09-24 02:45:00

yeah what that guy said...Like the queen. She had feathers, that purple sticker...i think the face is called cute face or something, and those 3d emerald decorations. You could also try to come up with boxes (that are seperated)and attach and glue or whatever it might form a character.or just pile things randomly, cut things up randomly and get a character xD thats how the experts do it 2010-09-24 11:33:00

I say for characters, try sticking to only one thin and one thick layer. You should use the thick layer to make the basic shape of the character, and then the thin layer for details and moving parts. I also recommend trying to make your own stickers for this. Its hard to explain, but you can get away with way more detail by using custom stickers. Try checking out the characters I made for Security Breach and you'll understand exactly what I mean. Hope this helps!2010-09-24 18:15:00

What do you mean custom stickers? Using the PSEye to take pictures? I don't have a camera. And your level is awesome. I don't think I'll ever reach that level of amazingness. As for the MM decorations, it seems like using them would be kind of hard. MM had the advantage of creating whatever sticker they felt they needed with a whole visual design team.

Also on your level, do you have a different way to do materials? Your rocks don't look like any other of the materials, or am I just missing something?

You can too. And i think it is what javi-haguse was saying by custom sticker.

Just made the object you want to obtain in your sticker with real material in game (use back thin layer for the background color) then take a photo in game. You can now use this photo as a custom sticker

Well say you want a brick wall. You can use the brick material with the huge bricks, make a really big square, take a big photo and use it on a small wall, so it looks like it's made of lots of smaller bricks. Thats a basic way of doing it. Or make a wall of bricks yourself, take a photo, get rid of them and then use the sticker on a blank wall, which saves all that thermo but still gives a detailed look....

Yes! I use the sticker method too. I build a brick wall out of basic metal...brick by brick. Then I take a picture. Otherwise you'll have a tremendous therm problem and horrible lag. Take numerous pics to get the best effect. Also experiment with the lighting when you do the pics. You can make it pretty realistic this way.

That's exactly what I mean! If you start tearing apart on my characters you're going to notice that there's a bunch of custom stickers. Lets say for the face: I made a huge nose and the skin in the back and I took a picture of that, and then used that sticker on it. Same thing I did for the little thingies that soldiers have on their chest. Is not that complicated! Just break it apart and you'll see!

As far as the rocks go.. No idea what you mean
I just used Basic Metal and lights... is that what you mean?

Oh I didn't think of checking metal. It seems strange how well basic metal works as a rock And I didn't know you could tear apart levels while you were playing them. I thought it was limited to creation. Neat. This game is so complex. How did people start out? Were you just gifted with creativity or was it a long learning process?2010-09-25 04:03:00

you can't tear apart levels in play..

Yea, I meant the stickers. You can removed them in Play Mode. Also, I think I give away some characters as prices.
As far as the creating process, yea... it is a long process! You should see my first levels, they're embarrassing!

For characters, check out some of mrsupercomputer's, comphermc's, or Morgana25's levels, they do a great job with characters! And like Javi said, try taking the characters apart and seeing how they're made.2010-09-25 19:30:00
