How to: Make Glowing Designs

How To Make Glowing Designs:

Hello! well, i can't wait tell LBP2, and i don't have the beta, but I love the glowing materials they have in it so i found a way to do it in LBP1. Now before you say, "Oh! its just Neon Grid Material!", i'll tell you, its not!

This nifty little thing is actually the circular lights! Thin one or thick!

To do this you will NEED the merging tool, you can find all the information you need on it here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24434-Merging-Objects-or-Materials-aka-Compression-Tool).

With this you will be able to make cool scenes like this:
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24357

Now, on the the tutorial!

Step 1: GET THE MERGING TOOL
This is pretty self explanatory, just use the link above to find out about it and where to get it

Step 2: GO TO CREATE MODE
Also self explanatory..

Step 3: MAKE THE LIGHTS
Can be the thick or thin, for this im using thick!
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24356

Step 4: MAKE THE DESIGN
Make a design of your choice in any material of your choice. For mine i'm making it from the dark green wood with a tree branch design
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24354

Step 5: INSERT MERGING TOOL
Take it from you community items bag. (I would copy one of your own into you item bag)
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24355

Step 6: PUT LIGHTS IN MATERIAL
You should overlap the lights quite a bit, if you dont (and you might want this, i don't know) it will like kinda patchy
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24353

Continue to put the lights in, but on the last one make it level with the end. to make the end look goo, you'll either have to cover with a bit of thin material OR make a think piece and Merge it with the end of the light
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24358

Now, just delete the merging tool, GLUE EVERYTHING TOGETHER, and look in awe.
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=24359

Now, depending on your objects size, you might not be able to use pistons, winches, wobble bolts, etc on it because the weigh of the objects add together when merged. Also, this could be VERY unstable in the background layers.

PS: If you put two thin layer pieces back to back, and merge an LED into the middle, it creates a thin sliver of LED light. The smaller the object the wider the sliver. You can kinda see this concept in the first picture with the orange lights, above and below the green tubes.

PSS: Using and combining different colored lights and materials makes a hologram or TV effect, but also makes the object very heavy

Thank you for reading, I hope this will help!

It seems cool, but isn't it kinda thermo unfriendly?2010-09-21 22:32:00

Nice! I wondered how they make that in LBP1....

Also couldn't you just use the 'cheat the thermo' glitch? There's a thread about it here in LBPC by Aya042 so find it then combine the 2 glitches and voila! Not using termo any more.

Can I mention I can't get the merging tool to work?

But good tutorial anyways!

Another way of getting a similar result is to use glass stickered with a glowy sticker with an led behind it. You can get by with fewer leds so it's not as thermo expensive. Unfortunately, there's no way of getting rid of the glowing dot at the middle of the led with either method (the dot shows through other materials).2010-09-23 07:59:00

could you make them bigger? less lights, but... it seems kinds pointless to make them small, or have I gotten confused.2010-09-23 09:14:00

@ mutant_red_peas - are you trying to merge on the left side? cuz you can only do it on the right... also it CANNOT be in grid

@ Sehven - it is true that glass can kind of glow when stickered, but you don't need the glass. Plus, mine only takes one layer

@ huntedstorm - for some things that would work but like if it is long and skinny ans you use one BIG light, it would stick out, which most people don't want

It's ok now, 'cos I went on TINTED's tutorial/website (for code)/collection level and now it works like there's no tomorrow. Hunky-dorey,2010-09-26 13:52:00

Cheat the Thermo + LBP2 = Level Implosion. Seriously.
Anyway, this looks cool. However, it seems thermo-unfriendly. I suggest using the Christmas light object instead- it doesn't have borders, and would be good for glowing lines in designs, and could save some thermo.

unfortunetly i don't have it... i gotz no money to buy it and its not for sale anyway... anyway in lbp2 you wont need to do this so no "level implosion"2010-09-29 00:16:00

When I make it you can always see a border around the edges of the lights and it's VERY bright. Other than that It works well.
I'm making a level for Sacktastic PttS and I'm gonna use a li'l tiny platforming section at the very end, to top it off. You may remember seeing the bounding dog-like thingies on LBP2 Trailers, it's the world where that happens. Can I request help to make it? Also I need somone to teach me the 'Cheat the Thermo' glitch. I tried it and failed miserably so can someone show me the basics?

Thanks.
