The Dominion Project [Update 2]

Archive: 16 posts

This idea is put on hold for a while, seeing as I have a second level idea i wish to pursue more.

Each or the level spoilers contains a part of the story. They are a couple of paragraphs long (The original was a 6 page story I wrote for a class.)

I have had an idea for a level but I never really thought I could do it, until LBP2 was announced.

EDIT1: Will be revised the story to make it more reader friendly.

EDIT2: Added spoiler tag for edit log

EDIT3: Changed the information about the characters and added a revised part of the story.

EDIT4: Finished revising story and placed it within 4 spoiler tags.

Themes
• Vengeance
• Corruption
• Manipulation
• Technology

Player Characters
• Roland Fawkes (Works for SIA)
• Geoff Page (Working Man)

NPCs
• Leonard McClellan (Scientist and friend of Roland and Geoff)
• Robert Lilliman (Leonard’s coworker)
• Valerie Page (Geoff’s wife)
• Government Sackurity

What is the Dominion Project?
The Dominion Project is an experiment to store the human life force and mind (memories and knowledge) by turning it into data that can be stored indefinitely. The plan is to store minds of the greatest leaders in the world.

Each spoiler is a part of a story that I will be making a level around

Character plays as Geoff

Geoff, Roland, and Leonard all grew up together in a small city. Since a young age all three were great friends, and even through adulthood they remained loyal friends. One day, at work, Roland overhears a conversation that will greatly impact Geoff and the rest of the country’s population. Later that day Roland reluctantly tells Geoff about what he has heard. Geoff starts trying to find out about the experiments that are taking place at the government laboratory that Leonard and Roland work for, and eventually the government notices.

Government sackurity officers catch Geoff in the laboratory and take him to a prison underneath the lab. Eventually Geoff hears he is going to be part of the Dominion Project, the same experiments that Roland was warning him about. These experiments could possibly cost him his life. Leonard is the head of the lab and the Dominion Project, but does not know that his first real subject is Geoff.

Leonard and his coworker Robert are bound to the experiments, and the government has taken precautions to make sure no personal interests get in the way by adding a one-way window that prevents them from seeing inside the experiment chamber.

Behind a one-way window Geoff is struggling for his life as he gets restrained while Leonard starts up the machine (Dominion Extractor). As the experiment starts the room is filled with a blinding green light and Geoff is writhing due to the agonizing pain that consumes his whole body. He looks to the window and sees his childhood friend at the controls. Suddenly he blacks out and the sackurity team moves his body out of the room.

END OF FIRST LEVEL.

Roland hasn't heard from Geoff in a week, and starts to get worried about him. One morning, he is reading the paper and sees Geoff’s name in the obituaries. Feeling bad Roland goes to Geoff's house to console Valerie, Geoff’s wife, and realized she doesn't know that 3 is dead. She said that was worried because she hasn’t seen him for almost 2 days.

After a brief conversation a knock is heard at the door. Government officials were there to tell Valerie the 'news' that Geoff died while working on a Jet fighter engine. As Valerie hears the news Roland sits back quietly and acts devastated. After the officials leave he comforts Valerie but then poses a question, why was Geoff’s death in the obituaries if she hadn’t heard about it.

Suspicious, Roland goes to his office in the lab and starts doing background checks (mini puzzle?). While doing his background checks he finds heavily encrypted files on the database that weren’t there before. Roland tries to access the files (puzzle) and triggers a security alarm. Realizing, once other security agents surround him, that there is no point in fighting he quietly submits as they take him away.

In the experiment room the sackurity interrogates Roland, once finished they take him to the same cell they stored Geoff in. As he is hastily dragged to his cell he passes a wall that is lined with tubes that look like incubators, he notices one that has Geoff’s unconscious body inside. Roland starts to Struggle and yell, before he gets out of hand the sackurity shoots him with tranquilizers and he goes limp.

The next day Leonard is looking over the results of the previous experiment (on Geoff) and calls it one of the greatest successes ever, the body is perfectly preserved and the mind has been uploaded and saved to the computer. He frivolously fills out a lab notebook with comments on the success of the project. As Leonard is fiddling with wires in the experiment room he hears screaming, and the mention of Roland's name. Leonard dismisses it as a coincidence, and finishes his work. As he leaves the room he sees the back of Roland being dragged into the room by 2 guards, despite their proximity Leonard fails recognize him.

Leonard goes and stares proudly at the incubators looking closely at the body; suddenly he recognizes Geoff’s face. Leonard had written the program that Geoff was uploaded to, it was meant for people with the discipline to stand in one spot for hours on end, not for a normal person like Geoff. Disgusted Leonard leaves early with the excuse that he is feeling sick.

Later Roland wakes up wired to the Dominion Extractor. Heavily armed sackurity is surrounding him just in the event he escapes. He looks up and sees what looks like a drill hanging over his head. He begins to struggle but it is useless because guards start to tighten the restraints. Immobilized he has no choice but watch the drill like object emit a blinding green glow as a lazar shoots down at him. The lazar stops right before it makes contact and envelopes his body. He begins to struggle for his life despite he restraints. He suddenly feels like he is being lifted up off of the table as the green envelopment starts raising him from the table, shrinking forming a tight green orb that returns to the Dominion Extractor. Finally his body goes limp.

END OF SECOND LEVEL

The next day Leonard comes back to find the equipment freshly used and his colleague very excited. He explains that he just finished uploading a subject a few hours ago and it was successful! The body was put away and is ready for the second stage of the experiments. Leonard is uplifted by this news, and he hopes his friend will be revived with no ill effects.

He looks through the lab book and double checks the files on the lab computer. He finds one error, his collogue uploaded the subject to the wrong domain. This is an easy fix for normal data but this is a human's mind. Leonard wasn’t too worried though as the mind would be returned to its owner in the second phase. Both Geoff’s and Roland’s bodies are brought into the extractor room. As the bodies are set up in the other room Leonard notices something else awry in the database, there are connections and files that were not there before. Remembering the task at hand he puts it to the back of his mind and starts searching for the misplaced mind in the other domain.

Roland wakes up, not in a cell though but in a strange place. He is mentally competent but has no memory of what happened after the light flashed. He wanders around the strange void with only his thoughts accompanying him. Suddenly he sees a white light ahead and begins to run towards it. He enters the light and sees a massive archive of floating icons and files. Suddenly Roland hears a disembodied voice say 'touch one'. For some reason he does as he is told and the file he touches forms into an electronic copy of the book 1984. He flips a few pages and closes it; instantly the book looses its physical properties and becomes an icon again.

Roland “Where am I?”

The voice responds, “You are in the government’s database.”

Shocked Roland asks, “What have they done to me?”

The voice fills Roland in on the procedure, what happened, and how it happened.

Finally Roland asks, “How do you know all of this?”

The voice replies once more, “I have read every one of these files, I have been here many eons and have had the time to read and examine the text icons that go swirling; I know everything there is to know, and more.”

The voice keeps going, “I have even created programs and documents that explain and show all of the errors in these text files. I have found answers to the mysteries of life, and I have encoded them so only people in this plane of existence may access them.”

Finally Roland gets the courage and asks the voice. “Who are you?”

Voice: “I am the most educated entity on this planet. I am aware of who you are Roland.

Roland: “but who are you?”

Voice: “I am Geoff. You should prepare we will be leaving shortly.

Two screens pop up, one showing Leonard finishing the prep on the machine and another screen with their bodies tied and wired up too the tables. On the screen Roland sees the look on Leonard’s face as he realizes that he holds both of his child hood friends lives in his hands and cannot screw up now.

The green light beams down onto Geoff as the orb slowly levitates down to his body. It reaches it and all is silent, the machine turns to Roland and starts the process. Leonard turns to his colleague worried and states that Geoff should be fully conscious and struggling right now. Leonard tells the sackurity to go in the room and untie Geoff.

END THIRD LEVEL

As the door to the experiment room Is unlocked the second green orb has begun to descend onto Roland’s body. The instant the security door opens Geoff breaks out of the restraints with lightning speed. He attacks the guards before they even notice he is free. He kills all of them throwing precisely placed fragments of metal from the bindings that held him down. After he dispatches the 6 guards he rushes in to the main lab. Leonard and his collogue try to rush out the door but Geoff throws a beaker at the emergency lockdown switch locking everyone in the lab complex. Leonard’s collogue faints in horror. Backed into a corner Lenard begins to tremble as Geoff tells him, “you have no idea what you put me through, I have spent eons studying everything you are doing here and why you are doing it. I have become virtually indestructible; I can do anything, create anything, and destroy anything. Why store minds on a database when you can harness the energy to create life. Not human beings, but of something more, something much more.”

As he is about to behead Leonard she says, “Now, you will know what living in a void is like.”

Suddenly as if he saw it coming, he ducks as a scalpel barely misses his neck. Turning around he sees Roland in the doorway.

Geoff laughs as he shoots glass at Roland, “How pathetic, you choose to challenge me? I know more that you can imagine, you haven’t spent even half of the time in the Void as i have.”

Roland, bent over after being says, “but I know enough,'” as he puts his hand on his leg and a small green light appears and he is healed.

Geoff: 'No how did you do that? This is impossible!'

Roland: “this is one thing you overlooked”

Roland picks up an empty gun from the floor, jams the small flame into the barrel and fires. It unleashes a ball of energy that hits Geoff in the chest. (this point is where I will have the boss fight begin)

Once the boss battle ends the screen fades and reappears with the visual of Roland leaving the burning laboratory helping Leonard walk behind him.

Right now my main focus is critique on the story and ways it can be improved.

In the coming weeks I plan on drawing basic level and character designs.

Well, I got your pm... Guess you sent it to me because I RAWK? lol

Well, to be quite honest, I didn't really read it all because I'm leaving for school in ten minutes... However, from what I read, it seemed ok, however I didn't really see too much gameplay elements. It just seems like a movie, but I'm hoping you have a bit of gameplay.

Yes, actually it was because you RAWK, but sadly you don't roll.

It is just the story line for now. By this time next week I will have some gameplay elements down.
Each part of the story is what I will be basing the levels on.

Thank you for taking the time!

Nice story! Very interesting and surprisingly, as it is sci-fi, quite believable. My only tip is also that it seems like a slightly interactive movie, although that isn't a bad thing!

For level 3, in the database, you could have some great platforming where you jump from icon to icon and destroy viruses.

Only I don't understand, it seems like they were only in the database for a few days or so, but apparently they were there for eons?

I'm not sure. Maybe just slip in a "Time travels differently inside a computer."

Thank you! So far it is just the story. When I finally get the level planning set up I am going to make it fit to a platformer with cutscenes.

I was actually thinking about having something to that effect. One thing I really want to do is hide some little secrets (like minigames) in the level that only people who take their time will find it.

Uhh thats not in there!!! GASP I had it in the full story I must have overlooked that and deleted it

Yes, I'd recommend secret level links inside icons shaped like something in the game you're going to, or maybe just a teleporter or something if you want to contain it in one level.

I'm also wondering how you'd make Sackboy/bot lie down on a table. I was thinking about it and came up with:

When viewing from the top, have Sackbot standing on invisible platform so it looks like he is lying down; have Lab assistants (if there are any) in control seats with it set so their heads face the camera, to make them look like they're standing up.

or, something like that.

I will most likely use the DCS and have it link to the minigame.

To be honest I didn't think about that till now.
but reading your work around makes it seem a lot more possible. Thank you so much!

No problem! I've found I'm quite good at solving problems in theory, but I don't have LBP2, so I can't be sure, and when it comes to actually making anything I can't be bothered.

I find this project very interesting and I'd like to see how it turns out!

I don't have LBP2 either i a planning it all out and stuff in preparation. When time permits i am going to make what i can on LBP1 and just transfer it all over.

SWEET!
When I do level testing way in the future (darn release setback) would you test it?

Sure! I'm not much of a builder though so I can't really help you with that. I'm more of an ideas person.

^_____________^ YES!

its cool if you aren't much of a builder, I usually do my building solo. Usually when I invite someone they usually make stuff and mess up my level before I'm finished.

Yeah, my internet is useless anyway. If I invite people to my levels it sometimes glitches them, glueing everything together.....

Not too nice when it's a mine level and there are quite a few moving parts, but there ya go.
