Tracer Racers

This level is based off of an idea I've had for over 3 years now. The idea is strikingly similar to Modnation Racers, but I swear to god I came up with it first.

So, first of all, it's either a 3 or 4 person racing game. One of the players starts off as the TRACER. Now, here's where it gets cool. The tracers flies around (in two dimension) and creates the track in real time. The track (which will be composed of dark circles with a wall on the outside to prevent players from falling off) is emitted behind the tracer as he flies. That means, that while he is creating the track, the RACERS are only 6 or 7 seconds behind him. It leads to a new track every time, and a whole different way to play the game.

The tracer gets points whenever the players get thrown off the track, crash, or get blown up etc etc. The racers get points by winning laps, and a bigger bonus for winning the race. After one race is over, the tracer switches. This continues until everyone has had a turn as the tracer, at which point the game stops, and the score board will come up.

Once the tracer has completed a lap, he then goes into an edit mode where he can place obstacles down on the track and take out sections of wall. During the race, he is also able to activate certain power ups that allow him to make the track skinnier, make it have no walls, put traps in the way, and a few other.

And to make everything easier, its going to be space/futuristic themed, so the whole flying thing doesn't bug people.

Now yes, there will be many technical difficulties with this, and trust me, I've thought of a lot of them (ie what happens if the tracer loops around and runs into the racers, how do you deal with figure 8 style cross overs, what if the tracer heads towards the edge of the map etc etc) and i expect the logic to be very very challenging. But thats where the fun is for me!

with the tracer powerups, how would that work if the racers themselves arent far behind you. wouldnt the race finish before you have a chance to lay any traps or obstacles. just a small question, other than that it sounds like a really cool idea.2010-09-21 05:33:00

Yes, they would finish just after you had finished your own lap. Now, as the tracer is racing through the course, he would have the ability to lay down certain things right there and then (thinner track, no walls, and a few others) which all take away from a large power meter.

Now, once the tracer has finished the first lap, he goes into and edit mode where he can place down more specific things, such as mines, holes, and more that i havnt yet come up with. That way, each lap is a little different from the last.

Your problem: The tracer could "loop around and turn into the racers".
My solutions:
- You could make the tracer turn (left, right) slower.
- You could block the tracer whenever he tries to make it (block the possibility to turn if he approach too much the racers).
