[move:Community Contests]Metroid: Sector 12216 Concept Art Contest + Team Member Poll

Archive: 12 posts

Hello, LBPC
As some of you might know, I have been working on concepts, designs, and gameplay mechanics for a LBP2 level called Metroid: Sector 12216 (Here's the link for the thread on that, specifically: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=35526-Level-Series-Metroid-Sector-12216 )
I want it to involve plenty of community ideas, so I decided to have a contest, as well as see who all wants to help me with actually MAKING the series. The poll is for finding the members that want to help.

CONTEST DETAILS:
Rules
-Follow all LBPC rules, of course.
-Do not steal ideas from another user, place, outside person (not on this website), etc.
-Make sure whatever ideas you post here are logical; don't give me a spaceship concept based on a pile of doggiedoodoo.

Judging
I will base judgment on Originality, Design, and (if applicable) Features.
-Originalty-- Is this concept yours? Is it unique?
-Design-- Does this concept work well and look good?
-Features-- Do the features of this concept make sense? Will they make for fun and interesting gameplay? (By Features, I mean things like What it does, How it does it, etc. Good Example: A bluish alien that fires lasers from it's tail. Bad Example: A dog that pees on your lawn without asking first. Features aren't REQUIRED, but they will help. If you have an awesome monster, but I have no idea how I would make it attack you, it may not have as high a chance. These are concepts, and I need at least a little bit of information about it.)

NOTE: Your artistic skills are not a part of judging. As long as I understand what it is and what it does, it has a chance. You can use any form of art to make it; Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator (my favorite), pencil and paper, or even a 3D model.

Winners
There will be a grand-prize winner for every section, as well as a second and third place winner.
Grand Prize-- Your concept will be featured in the series, as well as a whole level with a theme of your choosing.
Second Place-- Your concept will be featured in the series, and you get a section of a level with features of your choosing.
Third Place-- Your concept will be featured in the series.

Sections
This contest will be divided into a few parts, each being a different area of concepts. They will be judged separately, so there won't be ONE winner.

-Spaceship Design-- Samus needs a new spacecraft, as most would see in a new game. I need a concept for this, and the colors will be limited! She always has a craft with shades of yellow and orange with a green "starshield." You may use various yellows, oranges, greens and greys. Minor details of other colors are permitted, so long as they do not heavily clash. [So no bright purple on half the ship, and something like brown might not look the best, although if it works and isn't a huge amount, go for it]

-Enemy design-- There are always new badguys in a series; I need you to make some. They can be big, they can be small, but they have to be reasonable. I am working elemental beams into these levels (Ice, Fire, and Electricity), so if you want you can include elements in the enemy. (That doesn't mean, "Go make a buncha flaming turtles!" Be Original, remember?) These have to be average enemies; bosses are a different section. You can use whatever colors you want, but any information you want included must be shown. If you don't have it, I'll make it up.

-Boss and Boss Battle design-- Bosses are very important, and so are the battles in which you fight them. For this one, as there are two parts, I will allow you to have ONE partner. Things to keep in mind: Post on ONE account, and include both user's names; Both people receive equal credit for the ideas, and so both of you (if you make it) have an equal say in the level design; It IS REQUIRED that you have enough information here! I need to have a decent amount of info for it; At the least, Name of the Boss, How you come across it (Does it pop up or is it more important to the story?), and a weakpoint. GrandPrize winners have the option to make it more involved, a true piece of the storyline (maybe a commander of the SpacePirates or a new, highly dangerous villain?)

-Power-up/upgrade/beam design-- I need some new Power-ups. On the main thread, I have already-included ones, mine being Beam upgrades, Visors, etc. I will need something that will help you get somewhere, whether it is mandatory or secret. It needs to be a possible idea. Morph Ball is already being thought out, as I cannot see how to make it work. Do not give me Morph Ball-related concepts for this reason.

CONTEST TIME

This contest will officially begin NOW, and will continue until September 30th at midnight. I am in the Eastern Time Zone, and it is 9:00pm as of now. I will base the midnight on this, so make sure if you are three hours behind that you post in time. Have fun!

Gahh not too good at art but I'll try. Sounds like an awesome contest though I get how you put it here since it's for an LBP2 project but I still think it'd be better in the community contests section. Also, I'd be happy to judge if I can't make an entry unless you don't need any other judges2010-09-16 02:06:00

Oh poo. Is there a way I can move it, or do we need a Moderator? Slipped my mind D:2010-09-16 02:10:00

That's fine, but yeah, we'll need a mod to move it. Just make sure to edit name and make it also say please move to community contests.2010-09-16 02:12:00

I have a few ideas.

can the preset coustume be changed on the sackbot via chip??

change specific parts instead of costume as a whole?
(in this case powerups could effect specific sections of suit as they are obtained.)

Suits? you could respawn them as a diffrent sackbot with other suits on.

and powerups could change the sacks look, with the same concept, if powerups are all achived in a specific order.

Powerups:

Charge boots (name is work in progress), when triggered, the sackbots speed is temporariliy increased, then it has a cooldown time (this should be possible, speed is tweakable I heard)

(Did samus ever have one of these?)

possibly some sort of blue/yellow/whatever color trail is left behind, for more epic.

Ill draw something for it later.

@dragonvarsity : I was thinking about that. How would I go about it though? I couldn't find information on it D:

@mattbru77 : She did have something of the sort. I don't remember the name, but the basics were "Run far, go fast." If you ran constantly for awhile, you'd go really fast and be able to run up steep slopes and instantly kill enemies. I forgot about that, thanks(: As for the suits, that's a very good idea as well. I'd just need to figure it out

Agh, this is hardly a contest, though D: I need more people, or this'll be a dud. I'll still let the contributor's get their rightful prize, though

Uhmm. Well, the original Metroid games (Metroid and Super Metroid, at the least. Maybe Metroid II: The Return of Samus, too.) had 2 or 3 suits each: Power Suit, Varia Suit, and Gravity Suit. Working these into functional forms on this version would be hard, as the Varia Suit protected from high temperatures (Not magma/lava, however.) and the Gravity Suit allowed for full underwater and low-gravity movement. They would stay on once you got them, and all would be active (Gravity Suit was last, but you keep the heat resistance.) Also, each suit upgrade increased defense. The Power Suit was the base form.
The more recent games (Like the Prime series and Fusion) included new suits. Prime 2, I believe, had the Dark and Light Suits, which were protective in the Dark world. Fusion had the Fusion Suit, but I'm not sure what it did.
But all (or most) do have Power, Varia, and Gravity, and they would increase abilities and defense, while looking slightly different.
Other M was right after Super Metroid, so it didn't have a new suit or anything.

I don't think I'll do suits with functions, due to it being overly complex, but I might have unlockable "just-for-looks" suits available
Speaking of which, this conversation should be on the main thread, 'cause this isn't contest related. xD
Go on over there and we'll continue I believe the link's in my signature.
