Currently unnamed adventure series.

I've been dreaming up/ starting to build this for a while now, thought I might as well share the idea with you guys. I'm planning on making an adventure series in LBP2 with an emphasis on setting, back story and atmosphere. Here's what I have so far for a back story:

The series takes place in the world of Coda, a planet divided into two continents. It was once inhabited by the Codans, a race similar to humans. Little is now known about them except that, in their time, they had become a highly advanced civilization, leaving behind vast husks of metropolises and a massive complex of underground tunnels and trade routes.
But one day that all changed.

Approximately 600 years ago, a foreign race of strange beings arrived on Coda's Fabula Continent. Their motives for coming are unknown, but they completely devastated the entire surface of the planet. Their very presence in the world caused the spreading of great disease and corruption. Almost immediately, the land began to die and groups of the strange creatures began to appear throughout the environment, laying waste to towns and any survivors.

This day, the day everything changed, is known as the Last Day.

Knowing that they had little time, the Codans of the Prima Continent went to work on their last ditch effort to rescue humanity, Last Hope. In a field outside of Ly, sprawling metropolis and main urban centre of Coda, construction of a massive floating city began. It would be comprised of the main living area with a great library and observatory at its peak, with three powerful thrusters and six propellers plated with solar panels keeping it aloft in the winds of Prima Continent.

Any survivors were gathered aboard this new invention. Two months after the tragic Last Day, Last Hope began its slow ascent into the skies of Coda, where it remained for 600 years. This was the final day of recorded history.

The pure blooded Codans, being accustomed to a more comfortable, unexciting life style for the past two thousand years, slowly began to die off. While a few remained, before long the population was comprised almost entirely of Outsiders, ordinary humans who were conditioned to live in the harsh plains and villages away from the silver crown of Ly. Codan culture became a thing of the past.

Though Last Hope was very technologically advanced, it was of no use to the Outsiders. Because of their fairly quick disappearance, the Codans were unable to instruct the Outsiders in the ways of their technology or language. It wasn't long before much of the power began to go out. Even after 600 years the people of Last Hope have little idea about the now aging technology surrounding them (Imagine yourself as an ancient Roman or something from thousands of years ago. You find yourself in a store for high-tech gadgets/electronics and there is nobody there to explain anything to you. You would be completely clueless, and this is what it is like for the Outsiders living in Last Hope).

But now this technology, which was little more than a small fascination for the people of Last Hope, is starting to fail. They don't know how to fix it.

After 600 years, Last Hope is falling out of the sky.

I'll have more information about the actual story/gameplay in the next post.

Last Hope is in a state of panic as they learn that, within just months, the place that they and their ancestors have called home for decades will be little more than a mammoth heap of rubble, a scar on the face of battered Coda. They are now left with only one choice for survival: they must live on the ground below.

They must build their homes on the cursed ground below, where terrible creatures roam freely and disease emanates from the very earth you stand on. It's unthinkable. If the people are going to survive, something must be done. This is where you, the player, come in.

The story will focus on Arval, resident of Last Hope and only remaining descendant of the legendary Codans. Last Hope is dying, and he is tasked with its rescue. Legend states that the creatures have made their home on the Fabula Continent, across the impossible waves of the great ocean Codania. Without any sort of vehicle to cross, the only way through to Fabula is underground, through the sprawling trade networks of Sub-Codania. Curently, the only entrance into this passage is the village of Del, supposed haven from the harsh plains below as it sits on its high perch.

And so Arval is sent down into the ruins of Ly, his only direction to find some cursed village that nobody has heard from since the Last Day, and from there, head straight into the heart of the enemies who have destroyed the entire world he lives in.

Gameplay will be divided between side-scrolling levels and the top-down overworld which connects the various locales. I've thought up a fairly simple system which will allow you to occasionally encounter enemy creatures while exploring the overworld. Instead of going for really detailed counterparts to the actual levels here, I'm just going to be placing a simple version displaying the main landmark of that location (Inspired by FF9 on ps1).

There will be six levels:

Introduction: Back story is explained through some cut scenes, the main characters are introduced. May or may not end up being a separate level.

Level 1- Last Hope: You take control of Arval, exploring the urban areas. Won't be too heavy on exciting gameplay here, mostly just for exposition and introduction to the plot.

Level 2- This is Ly?: Arval is sent in a barely functional transportation pod into the heart of Ly, the now crumbling metropolis below. The propellers of Last Hope would kick up a lot of wind, so I'm going for a dusty, windy atmosphere here. I also want to show a contrast between the relatively intact technological features in Last Hope and the completely abandoned, broken machinery that Ly is now filled with. Gameplay will focus on use of the grappling hook as you travel through collapsed buildings and such.

Level 3- The Other Town: Arval arrives in Del, only to find it in a somewhat sorry state. After a quick bit of gameplay in the actual town you will find yourself in Sub-Codania, the main area of this level. I want to have a really creepy, surreal atmosphere for this level, which is working really well in the segments I've built so far (I have the actual town built already). The gameplay here is just going to be simple platforming with a bit of a boss battle at the end.

Level 4- Fabula: Arval emerges from the tunnels to find himself in a wet, rainy wasteland filled with enemies. This level will have the player traversing said wasteland. The idea here is that there is something trying to kill you throughout who chucks pieces of the environment from the other end of the level. The level will focus on use of the Power Gloves/Grabinators as you must rearrange the environment to get past all the crap this monster is throwing at you. Boss battle at the end using Power Gloves.

Level 5- Belly of the Beast: After crossing the plains, Arval discovers the main base of operations for the monsters. This level will feel very alien as you travel through a dark, futuristic base that was simply not designed to be used by an ordinary human. Low-gravity, plenty of bouncepads, atmospheric with a focus on the creatinator. Sort-of boss at the end.

Level 6- Hello.: Don't want to discuss this part too much, but this is where you meet the main baddie. Mostly a lot of little cutscenes/ listening as you go through a relatively easy environment. Not sure if there's going to be a super cool boss here or not, I can't really say until I know for sure about using all the LBP2 stuff.

Epilogue: The End.

I've already starting building small parts of this over the past month or two, but it's definitely going to take me a bit to put this puppy together. Comments or suggestions would be cool.
