Questions Sent to Alex

Archive: 30 posts

Alright, here are the questions I sent over to Alex. I drew from them all to come up with ones that would address as many of your questions as possible. Here's the list that was sent:
How do you feel about the reaction to LittleBigPlanet? Is it what you hoped it would be?

If there was anything you would have done differently during development, what was it, and how would you have it changed?

Downloadable Content is a big seller for many people. How often would you like to release DLC, realistically?

Is there any possibility of this game having a long(3-5 years) lifespan, complete with support from Media Molecule? If not, how long would you like to support LittleBigPlanet with DLC and updates?

How much of the game can DLC change? Can it modify the entire physics system, or is it limited to introducing new materials and objects?

The soundtrack in LittleBigPlanet is fantastic. Will we be seeing new music as DLC in the future?

What kinds of DLC will be free, and what kinds will we be paying for?

What kinds of features were dropped during the development process? Are there any plans to re-introduce features as DLC?

Speaking of dropped features, what happened to the Ice danger? Is there any chance that it might be added in later?

Will the snapshot feature ever automatically transfer pictures to the PS3's HDD, so they can be accessed and transferred to a PC? This would be a welcome feature for many, including myself.

There are some other features that we have come up with, including a "Magnetise" tool(complete with polarity options), fans(or some sort of wind tool), gravity manipulation, and new materials: water is obvious, but there's also been suggestions of sand, jelly, and even a cloth material that can be grabbed and walked on. How feasible are these features, and are there any plans to include any of them at some point down the road?

Speaking of new features, we've got a suggestions forum (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=48) at our site for community suggestions on what improvements they'd like to see in LBP. What kind of plans do you have to get feedback from the LBP community?I don't know how soon we'll hear back, but no rush - we've got LittleBigPlanet(either now or soon) to tide us over.

Is it just me, or are almost all of the questions about DLC? I get the feeling we're just going to get one big fat response of "We don't know yet".2008-10-29 16:00:00

There wasn't much else to ask about, and knowing Mm, they probably have some nice ideas going they may be willing to talk about.

There's a lot going on at the moment(they just released a third patch within 5 days time) so I'm not rushing things. He promised he'll answer them when he can, and I trust he'll keep that promise. Mm has never let me down before.

Yeah, I nudged him once about it, with no reply, so I took the hint and waited. He hasn't replied since. I'll email him once more for good measure.

I know Alex would be keen to answer these himself but the team are mighty busy right now, so here are a few answers...

Downloadable Content is a big seller for many people. How often would you like to release DLC, realistically?
Realistically we're hoping to release new content every week. You'll have seen a lot of costumes already, but we're planning a whole lot more besides with our first non-costume pack due very soon.

Is there any possibility of this game having a long(3-5 years) lifespan, complete with support from Media Molecule? If not, how long would you like to support LittleBigPlanet with DLC and updates?
In response to the first part - absolutely, there's plenty of chance. For as long as the community is active we'll be looking to continue the support of the game with new content.

How much of the game can DLC change? Can it modify the entire physics system, or is it limited to introducing new materials and objects?
I can't go into too much detail, but the answer is "a lot".

The soundtrack in LittleBigPlanet is fantastic. Will we be seeing new music as DLC in the future?
Quite possibly, we've seen plenty of requests for new music, and while we can't make any promises right now it's something we'll definitely look at.

What kinds of DLC will be free, and what kinds will we be paying for?
The short answer is that various extra content will be free, and the same with paid content. All extra content costs time and resources to create so this has to be considered when thinking about whether something is paid or free, but we're committed to bringing both out regularly.

What kinds of features were dropped during the development process? Are there any plans to re-introduce features as DLC?
A lot of changes happened during the development process for a variety of reasons. Where a feature was cut it was usually because it either didn't work well or simply wasn't fun. The ability to bring extra downloadable content out gives us the opportunity to revisit these ideas, so there may be features that make a return.

Will the snapshot feature ever automatically transfer pictures to the PS3's HDD, so they can be accessed and transferred to a PC? This would be a welcome feature for many, including myself.
It's a request we're aware of, but have no firm plans for at the moment.

Speaking of new features, we've got a suggestions forum at our site for community suggestions on what improvements they'd like to see in LBP. What kind of plans do you have to get feedback from the LBP community?
We're keeping an eye on all the feedback we get from around the world and the various official and community-lead sites for LittleBigPlanet. We're keen to take a lead from what you guys want, and while it might not always be possible to create exactly what's been asked for we'll take suggestions as a starting point for new content and changes to the game.

Thanks Sam, much appreciated. The one that never seems to get any answer is where the Ice tool went. I'm guessing it was made unfeasable or is a planned DLC some time soon, I just wish I knew which!2008-12-09 13:00:00
