Romp through the caves, jump some gaps, swim in some water, get some bubble combos, and search for secrets!
Well, I've finally made a whole level. Takes place in a cave and the in-game dialog tells the story. Take a look and see for yourself! (But seriously, by yourself. A part or two will not work with 2+ players...)

Before you come back and tell me about it, the level is almost all platforming. It can be challenging to get all the bubbles at some point, though. The level isn't incredibly long, neither is it short. It will feel shorter than it actually is during the playthrough! Its roughly 5-8 minutes depending on your speed and how many secrets you search for.

I consider it fairly good looking, also. I know some of you are thinking, "Another cave level..." It may be overdone, but it still is nice!

NOTE: Checkpoints are in the level, so don't be afraid of dying. I just hid them because they did not fit the the whatsoever.

Without further delay, here are some pics! Accidently put in backwards order...

I Was one of those Beta Testers! - And i liked the level.
I Was also Online when he published it fo'real, and i played it and i have the high score muaha.

The Sound Effects At the beginning Scared me... Why are they in there...

For the type of level this is... it's pretty **** cool, hes made awesome use of all 3 layers, visuals are great and gameplay is pretty straight forward!

SO GO AND PLAY IT <3

Thanks for the interest!

As for the sounds, it's supposed to be mining equipment.

I knew that this level would be good, the reason why is simple, piggabling's like me! I know that he has trouble finishing levels (like me), so when I saw that he's finished one I knew that it'd be awesome!

Very good work piggabling, your cave scenery was fantastic! Both lighting-wise and corner-editing-wise! Usually only the master creators can make caves look so darn good! But you've managed to do that and then some! The gameplay was fun too, the flow and the clever use of layers and point combos really pay off! Fantastically done piggabling, :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3!

(Yes, I used exclamation points for every sentence!!)

This level is completely epic, the visuals where awesome and the level itself was original, the game-play its not new except for some contraptions but it's still fun a nice to play . The detail of the level allowed me to enjoy it more; you made such a great use of the corner edit tool and this gave the level and exceptional look.

I rated :star::star::star::star::star: and i think i forgot heart but i'll remember to put it.

Good job!

Please remember to play my level King quest and leave some feedback here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=35061-King-Quest.-(3-levels)).

Woah! Thanks! I really wasn't expecting such great feedback! Thanks a ton for playing and I'll definitely be looking for a level if you ever finish one!

Thanks for the feedback also. Very nice to hear the positive words. I'll try to play your levels as soon as possible. Glad to hear you guys liking it so far. Who knows, more levels may be on the way. Although I wouldn't count on it too much.. Haha!

A fun little cave adventure. Good visuals and great use of the three layers make this a level that is both crisp and a joy to play. Very good sir!2010-09-15 03:28:00

Glad to hear from such a prominent level creator. Does anyone have any improvements to be made? Anything? I want this as nice as possible!

I played through it like I said I would, and I have an idea for an improvement.

The mushrooms I saw throughout the level were weird. They were just stickers that were placed onto the level. It would be better if you made them out of an material and placed the sticker on that, so they would look more like real mushrooms.

Other than that it was really fun, and was sad that it seemed short for me. I probably didn't get all the secrets.

You asked for it, lol.

- Why does the first sound effect cut out so suddenly?
- I would put the mushroom stickers on a flat layer, as they don't look too good with the rock texture.
- Close up view while swimming needs to zoom out further or let the player see above more. I was just winging it and hoping there was no hazards in my way.

Love the bubble combos in this one. Even in a bonus area, you need to work to get it. Nice touch.
I was a little confused with the plot (he said something like "I've always wondered what was down there."), as I didn't read/see/hear any more story. Does he live around the caves? How did he get lost? etc.
I think if you're gonna make a cave level, you need even more X factor than usual. At least to impress someone like me who is sick of caves.
Would be nice if there was something other than jumping for the first 3/4 of the level.
Also maybe tell people the checkpoints arn't infinite. They are the norm, and with the combination of hiding them and exploring, hearing that alarm sound all of a sudden hits you for six. I died on the last vine bit. x_X
Oh, and good layer management.
At least a 4 stars, very decent level.

I gave it 5*/H. I rate things based on how well they do what they're trying to do. You were going for "graphically pleasing platforming", and you nailed that. The layering, in particular, was top notch, and I think you put enough diverting paths in to make the level seem bigger than it was.

Suggestions:
* I agree with midnight_heist on the fungi. They would probably look more like fungi if they were stuck to thin-layer glass. You might get away with DM, too, if material thermo is an issue.
*If you're gonna put in a story, I say go whole hog. I also don't need one, if you don't want to bother with one. There's a Japanese creator on Cool Pages right now, with something like "Magic Forest" or something. He has "camera moments" whenever the player pulls a particularly awesome lever...but there's no text. If you go this route, players will expect to have their eyeballs treated to something cool every so often. If you give them something to read, they'll expect more to read. I give players text because I'm crap at providing backgrounds. I don't think you need to go that route.
*Each scene could be a bit larger. You have very nice special effects, but don't assume the player needs one in every single game screen. This level runs more or less at a ratio of One Challenge:One Special Effect. You could space that at 3:1, or 5:1, and the level would still look awesome.

Obviously, these suggestions are exactly that, and with the last two, it might be better to ignore those things for this level, and consider them for your next one.

I agree with everyone on the fungi. It was kind of last minute and therefore I did not go into as much detail as I should've. I may go fix it later, but I'm not sure of that yet... I do still have more than half of the thermo left...

I agree with you, but my story is what I was aiming for. Something simple, yet believable and able to be based off of. It's a kind of story that, by the end of the level, you don't even remember what happened. Kind of my subtle, demented, little idea...

Every time I play through the level, I think the same thing, yet my level is largely to complicated to add parts. This is the reason I went back and added extra secrets. It is incredibly short "feeling" if you actually rush through the level. I encourage going for the high score, you know!

Obviously, these suggestions are exactly that, and with the last two, it might be better to ignore those things for this level, and consider them for your next one.

Thanks again!

Please keep all this great feedback coming!

The pictures put on your page attract me to play your level and what a good surprise !
Your level is a pleasure to play.
I liked how you use the layers, we have really the impression of a big maze whereas the path is quite easy to follow (and fortunately !).
Moreover the area with the waterfall and the exit of the carverns are so refreshing ! Very well designed !
However I didn't understand all the noise at the begining of the level and some shapes are maybe to squary

Anyway there are lots of LBP levels based on caverns in this community but your level is definitely one of the best. I gave :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3

At last I would be interested to now your thoughts on my level below, give it a try if you have time someday.

Seriously, I can't believe you've only just got around to publishing a level. You absolutely can do this creating thing!

I really enjoyed playing Unknown Caverns. The whole level design is excellent with great use of all the layers and with plenty of diversions/different paths without ever the player feeling they are lost. That's not easy to pull off and you did it really well.

The visual were nice too (apart from the mushrooms which I won't go on about as so many people have already pointed them out!). You had some nice lighting and some cool effects like the explosion. The underwater section provided some variety to break up the caves and the lighthouse was a totally unexpected bonus, lol!

You also pulled off some straightforward fun gameplay with plenty of jumping and bubble stringing. Straightforward doesn't mean easy though - some of those combos take a bit of getting! It has replayability too as I immediately replayed to get some more of the bubbles I missed first time round (still missing one prize bubble, though ).

Overall it was just a really nice level to play. :star::star::star::star::star: and <3

I'm a fan of unconventional ideas. Cool thing about not being Mm is that you can do what you want, and not worry about sales. That said, if this is what you're shooting for, I recommend opening dialogue. Just one Magic Mouth or two.

Gracias! Ha! I think I may head over and add an opening mouth. Something along the lines of, "Why am I the one who has to do the mine maintenence?" Just a little thing that sets the story a little bit better. Does that sound better? A little extra thing that just "paints a clearer picture" of the level...

Thanks for everyone who has played so far! I would always like more feedback!

I like that idea especially because it doesn't actually explain anything. It's like an episode of Doctor Who. "Here we are in Flizbatzshteppel, zillions of miles from Earth. Oh, look: it's a Krognar beast!"

No sarcasm meant. I was just saying that occasionally an explanation just gives "what", but not "why". And your idea would work. It's simple, and sets the player off running.2010-09-21 02:08:00
